An extraordinarily beautiful copy of van der Post's first work. 350pp. Laurens’ debut novel In a Province confronts head on the ethical dilemmas and dangers of colonialism in South Africa. Written at a time when few white authors addressed these issues van der Post confronts the injustices of the socio-political landscape of South Africa in the early 20th century while addressing the psychological toll that both the colonizers and colonized suffered as a result. In a Province is undoubtedly solidified in the canon of anti-colonial and postcolonial literature. Its exploration of human rights and ethical responsibility gives it continued relevance in discussions of historical oppression and reconciliation.
