Notes: In 1846 the French government decided to send a mission to Persia an expedition led by the geographer Xavier Hommaire de Hell to carry out further investigations. Laurens a young artist who had studied in the studio of the painter Paul Delaroche was employed to record the course of their journey in a series of images that after his return in 1849 were used to illustrate Hommaire de Hell's Voyage en Turquie et en Perse 4 vols and atlas 1854-60. Despite the rigours of the journey and an attack of fever Laurens filled several sketch-books with his drawings of the people and landscapes they encountered. Despite faults an excellent copy of this treatise by Hickock an atypical U.S. 'mental & moral philosopher' of the time whose complex position was a kind of ultimately religious neo-Kantianism as far as I can figure. He also authored a companion 'Empirical Psychology'. Apaprently extremely rare with no copies listed on major web-sites at time of listing. The copyright entry date verso t.p. is 1861 but other sources give 1st ed. as 1849 his first book. Date and place inscribed in black pencil by the artist at the top right of the work November 1848. Presented in an antique varnished and gilt wooden frame under glass. Minor black mark at the upper left corner and a very small imperfection at the lower right corner; overall a well-preserved piece. Jules Joseph Auguste Laurens was a painter and lithographer born in Carpentras on 27 July 1825 died in Saint-Didier on 5 May 1901. From a family of five children Jules joined at the age of twelve his elder brother Jean-Joseph Bonaventure Laurens who had settled in Montpellier. He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier alongside Alexandre Cabanel and mingled with the artistic circles of his brother. From 1842 to 1846 he stayed in Paris to complete his training admitted fifth out of 600 at the École des Beaux-Arts and worked in the studio of the painter Paul Delaroche. From 1846 to 1849 he traveled as a draftsman through Turkey and Persia as part of a scientific mission led by the geographer Hommaire de Hell. Despite the missions failure Hommaire de Hells death unpaid work Jules returned with several hundred sketches drawings and watercolors that nourished his artistic activity. These portfolios are now preserved at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Avignon and in Carpentras Bibliothèque Inguimbertine and museums. From this journey he also brought back works of Qajar art later donated to the Musée Calvet in Avignon and the museum in Carpentras. Upon his return to the Comtat he contributed to the development of the Carpentras library-museum. A collector he donated numerous notable works by recognized contemporary artists Victor Hugo Ingres Auguste Bonheur Eugène Cicéri Gustave Doré etc. Known for his Orientalist paintings and portraits of peasants from Auvergne and Comtat it is in landscape art that he distinguished himself a follower of Corot and the Barbizon school. unknown

The front spine joint has cracking to the cloth starting at the top edge. There are smaller tears to the bottom front spine joint bottom rear spine joint and a very small one to the top rear spine joint affecting the cloth mainly and not the actual structure of the spine. The text pages are clean and bright. A previous owner has penciled his name and date on the half title page. "He took his degree at Union College in 1820. Until 1836 he was occupied in active pastoral work and was then appointed professor of theology at the Western Reserve College Ohio and later 18441852 at the Auburn Theological Seminary in Auburn New York. From this post he was elected vice-president of Union College and professor of mental and moral science. In 1866 he succeeded Dr. E. Nott as president but in July 1868 retired to Amherst Massachusetts where he devoted himself to writing and study. A collected edition of his principal works was published at Boston in 1875.
