In 1899 the writer and publisher Laurens Maynard 1866-1917 co-founded the Boston publishing firm of Small Maynard & Company. He left the firm in 1907 to work as a representative for the New York City publishing house of Brentano's. He was a native of Boston and a graduate of the Boston Latin School. Following graduation he briefly lived in Denison Iowa 1884-1885 where he worked as a teacher at the Center school in Milford Township and learned something of the printing trade at the Denison Review before returning to Boston.
