The railroads supplemented the Ohio River and Great Lakes commercial systems. Indiana and Ohio were critical components of the agricultural complex of the northern states. The Ohio River serviced the ports of the states with sugar cotton and rice. These commodities were then spread inward to points as far as New York City and Boston by the rail networks. The map is hand-colored with definitive border separation from Europe. The travel notations shows London to Madras at 8000 miles; London to Hong Kong at 10800 miles. The all water route from London to the Far East has a complementary land-water route. The water route shows the Suez land bridge being used. Suez Canal was under construction starting April 25 1859. Donald Grant Mitchell 1822-1908 was an essayist who was a Washington correspondent of the New York Morning Courier and Enquirer a connection in which he first employed his usual pseudonym of "Ik Marvel." He went to cover the revolution in Paris in 1848 and returned to New York in 1850 to edit a magazine satirizing society named the Lorgnette the twelve issues of which he published later as a book under the pseudonym of "John Timon." This is a book which contemplates country and farm writing throughout history in the works of the Greeks the Romans mediaeval writers in France and Germany and the British. Chipping to spine with small loss of material at top boards faded foxing to endpapers. Good condition. Charles Scribner hardcover

This is a superb presentation of Lake Michigan and its two main bordering states. Each county is identified by its own color in the simple three color scheme. Most important is the presentation of sophisticated railroad networks in both states. Maps of Milwaukee and Detroit are printed on the verso of each of the two pages of the map. 1861281Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell 1861. 14 x 11 1/2 inches. Very good. This map is a beautiful example of the mapmakers art. Printed by lithography and hand colored at the time of publication it was produced for inclusion in the General Atlas. It is beautifully colored to designate the counties of each state. The Hannibal and St. Joseph cuts across the northern part of Missouri. It was the railroad that cut off the commerce of the Mississippi River from St. Louis and redirected it to Chicago via the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad. This map is in very good condition. S.
