Silas Weir Mitchell February 15 1829 - January 4 1914 was an American physician scientist novelist and poet. He is considered the father of medical neurology and he discovered of causalgia complex regional pain syndrome and erythromelalgia and pioneered the rest cure. He wrote juvenile stories several volumes of respectable verse The Hill of Stones and Other Poems was published in 1883 by Houghton Mifflin and Co. and prose fiction of varying merit which earned him a leading place among American authors at the close of the 19th century. His historical novels in particular notably Hugh Wynne 1897 The Adventures of François 1898 The Youth of Washington 1904 and The Red City 1909 are among the best of their genre. Weir Mitchell's HUGH WYNNE is one of the best historical novels set during the Revolutionary War in American literature. Set mainly against a Quaker backdrop in Philadelphia Mitchell creates an accurate picture of the social as well as the military history of the time. Hugh Wynne was a popular American novel by Silas Weir Mitchell who was also a medical doctor published in 1897. The story is recounted in autobiographical form from the perspective of an American patriot during the American Revolution who has a strict father. He eventually serves under General George Washington and has various adventures as well as a love interest playing out during the Revolutionary War era. Much of the book takes place in Philadelphia. The Bookman gave the book high praise. The book was first serialized in The Century from November 1896 through October 1897. The Century Co hardcover
