The Curtain behind which this Idol sat was not drawn open except on Feast-Day'.<br /> From John Ogilby's 'America: Being the Latest and Most Accurate Description of the New World' published in London in 1671. Ogilby's work is an English translation of Arnoldus Montanus 'Die Nieuwe en onbekende Weereld' published in Amerstdam although greatly expanded in some instances and with new maps and views. This work details the revoking of the sentence of the Galeres or galleys. This edict was presented to the court of aids on the 19 November 1685. In the original French. Being two leaves and therefore four pages. A very scarce work with no copies cited on the Library Hub. This edict deals with the punishment of individuals on the galleys or galeres. There is mention of the ineffectiveness of whips due to the fact that this simply injures criminals. The tract states that medical professionals are then kind to the offenders which brings a rise in recidivism. An interesting insight into the French penal system in the late seventeenth century. Disbound as called for. Externally very smart. Light spots to the front and rear pages. Inscription to the title page dated 1685. Firmly bound. Pages are bright with light scattered spots. 16845676Cologne: Henry Wommer 1684. First edition. The publication place of Cologne is probably fictitious and this work was almost certainly printed in Holland. Relatively recent hardback binding with marbled boards and leather title to the spine with gilt titles. In very good condition with very slight rubbing only. Internally in beautiful condition. Clean and bright throughout. 24 pages long. 14cm x 8.5cm. The pamphlet emerged at a pivotal moment in the confrontation between the Dutch Republic and Louis XIV's France. The War of the Reunions 1683–1684 had just concluded with the Truce of Ratisbon Regensburg signed on 15 August 1684 which rewarded France with Strasbourg Luxembourg and other territorial gains from its so-called "Reunion" policy. It is catalogued in the Dutch Pamphlets Online collection by Brill which preserves thousands of such documents from the Dutch Golden Age and the subsequent period of conflict with France. The author however remains unknown. No copies available at the time of cataloguing with a handful of library holdings All Germany Netherlands or Poland. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 905780005. . A fine very scarce political and religious tract written at the peak of the Popish Plot and therefore ant-Catholic hysteria in England and Scotland. A very scarce pamphlet. ESTC reference no R19980. This is setting A referred to by the ESTC with signature mark 'A' on A1 under 'es' of 'unless'. The first line of p.4 reads 'Lastly if he has' with a lower case 'i'. This work was written in response to Elkanah Settle's pamphlet 'The Character of a Popish Successor'. Settle was a poet and playwright who took an active share in the anti-Popish agitation. However later he exposed Titus Oates and with the Revolution of 1688 his political leanings were more towards the Whigs. This is an analysis and response to Settle's pamphlet. Following this work Settle later recanted his 'The Character of a Popish Successor' and cited the danger of the opinions he expressed. Bound in a limp cloth binding. Externally very smart with just the occasional marks. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd light spots. Very Good Indeed Nathaniel Thompson hardcover

Most of Sage's publications were anonymous but their authorship was well known; his controversial writings were shrewd protestations at the intolerant political & religious policy of the new monarchy. Amund Grefwe ca. 1610-1677 was the first printer in Göteborg. He studied Latin at the University of Uppsala and was the author of a few minor works. He began his printing career in Uppsala working for Professor Wallius's private press and later for Laurentius Paulinus Gothus. Grefwe moved to Stockholm where he worked for the royal translator Ericus Schroderus and when he moved back to his place of birth in Nyköping Grefwe goes with him. In 1646 he was offered a job in Göteborg. When he had finished the work on "Carionis Chronika" he moved to Göteborg in 1650. He was not satisfied with the promised conditions and complained to the Governor of Västergötland. In 1653 he was given priviliges by Queen Kristina which allowed him to publish and sell his own works and also scholarly books. In 1650 he published the first book printed in Göteborg: " Christelige Gåfwors Apoteek." </em> unknown

The latter a famous and wholly remarkable 253 line macaronic poem which originally appeared around 1530 where each word begins with the letter P - it was reprinted well into the 18th century often alone. 16331977London: John Norton for Joyce Norton 1633. A nice copy of this two volume work unfortunately lacking the title page to Volume I. The volume starts on gather A. Original full leather boards with a touch of bumping / edgewear to the boards. Recent spine with titles and date to the spine. There is a little water staining to the work particularly to the edges and a slight nicking to the edges of the blank front end paper. Some darkening / foxing again particularly to the edges. Owner's inscriptions to the inside front board and to the 2nd end paper. IWe think what is laid in as the first end paper is a later addition when the spine was replaced - the second end paper appears from condition and inscriptions to be the original one. Also lacking is leaf 3I2 page 99/100 with the text here also lacking. Bizarrely a full page plate dating from 1814 has been laid in to face page 275. This is an engraving by Wm Craig and L. Brown showing national liberty crushing the nations of Europe. This is perhaps laid in here as it is opposite an homily against Disobedience and Wilfull rebellion. This long homily published in various forms is important as it was part of the celebrations following the failure of the rebellions against Queen Elizabeth I. I have resisted the inclination to have this book restored and have adjusted the price accordingly to accommodate restoration if desired for the purchaser as it is such a unique item.</p><p>Provenance –</p><p>Inscribed by two hands:</p><p>First inscription probably contemporaneous with publication: J – L inked through and obscured. "At the Great Posterne betwixt Cripplegate and Moorfields. Druggist." <br />Postern. At the west end of Petty France leading into Moorfields within the precinct of the late Monastery or Priory of the New Hospital or Hospital of the Blessed Mary without Bishopsgate</p><p>2nd inscription to verso free endpaper "Robert Robson Anno Domini 1733" with some practice writing "To – To - To" below it. Perhaps in a younger hand than the inscription on the opposite page</p><p>3rd inscription on crown page: "Robert Robson Book A.D. 1733." "Sacrilegy est instar." "De grote state principu disputart. Alsted"</p><p>Sacrilegy est instar - Justinian's Code and later interpreters such as Frederick II used this concept to argue that questioning the ruler's decisions was akin to violating religious sanctity. Interesting to note that the Alsted quotation is in Dutch</p><p>Robert Robson appears to have been a well-educated individual with knowledge of canon law. He has also made a marginal annotation to the Prayers: "Pem. Arcadia p. 243" ie The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia; by Sir Philip Sidney.</p><p>Frontispiece to 'Eikon Basilike: The pourtraicture of His Sacred Majestie in his solitudes and sufferings'; emblematical design; to right Charles I kneeling on his left knee looking upwards with his head three-quarters right holding a crown of thorns a book propped on the table in front of him and a crown at his feet; a ray extends from his left eye to the crown of martyrdom at top right. The frontispiece is cropped to be accommodated in such a small volume. <br />"Marshall's design is known in seven slightly different states – an indication that the image was in great demand with a plate being worn down by the continual printing process and re-engraving many times over. The item microfilmed is actually Wing E301.</p><p>This copy complies with the British Library and Oxford University Magdalen College copies but there are variants with a further plate similar to the octavo editions. There is no evidence that this copy has ever had an extra plate.</p><p>King Charles I of England was executed by beheading on January 30 1649 in London following his conviction for high treason after losing the English Civil War to Cromwell's Parliamentarian forces. This marked a major shift in British legal and political history.</p><p><br />On December 25 1649 John Williams was committed to the Gatehouse by the Commonwealth Council of State for printing and publishing scandalous and seditious pamphlets.</p> John Williams hardcover

Octavo 165x105mm in darkened calf-covered boards neatly repaired with remnants of original spine leather viii310pp2pp blank. Titlepage missing upper right corner but text not affected staining to lower edge throughout but not affecting text. Ink ownership dated 1750/1 at top of titlepage another "Catherine Sponer" on verso of final blank. Fore-edge staining/soiling mainly to beginning and end expecially in bottom left hand corner but not affecting readability. Corners rounded but with good margins throughout. Peter Walsh was born in County Kildare. He was guardian of the Franciscan friary at Kilkenny 1648-1650 and then served as chaplain to Castlehaven s army in Munster. All Catholic clergy captured by the Cromwellians were executed and Walsh in danger of death fled Ireland eventually to London where he lived obscurely until the Restoration. Walsh remained a devout adherent of the Catholic Church but kept friendly relations with the Anglicans. He wrote 1672-1684 a series of controversial letters against Pope Gregory VII's doctrine of papal supremacy a History of the Remonstrance 1674 and various other works critical of his fellow Catholics. This book - very rare in its first edition as here - is usually attributed to him. It argues for tolerance between religious factions calling for true liberty of conscience. It condemns persecution in relation to religion arguing that Catholics have as much right to be tolerated as Recusants. As long as other faiths hold doctrines that are consistant with peace and government they should be allowed to follow their conscience. Such writings put Walsh at odds with the Catholic church but before his death in 1688 may have influenced King James II`s 1687 declaration of indulgence referenced by Wing W627.
