1875113039London: Simpkin Marshall & Co. and J. D. Potter. Poor with no dust jacket. 1875. First Edition. Hardcover. In original half leather/marbled boards gilt titling to the spine. The boards and the leather spine and corners are very rubbed and worn the front and rear boards are completely detached. Page fore-edges are dusty/browned and stained. Internally in very good condition with a VERY little sporadic foxing/staining here and there but tightly bound and generally very clean. Formerly in the Seafarers' Education Service library - Crew's Library with their book plate on the front pastedown and a blue 'Withdrawn' stamp but NO other Library markings anywhere in the book. Opposing the bookplate on the ffep is a 'presentation plate' and not noted but the former owner was Joanna Greenlaw - a well known author having written books on horology and the sea etc - a couple of tears in this endpaper. 2 1060 pp. A couple of full page b/w plates a b/w fold out diagram and some line drawings /diagrams in the text. Contents cover various "subjects connected with maritime affairs." some continued from former volumes others are 'stand alone' - Articles included in this volume = ' Wreck Report for 1873 '; ' Our Colonies -V - Indian Possessions and Australasia ' ; ' Arctic Expedition of 1875 ' ; ' Atlantic Stream Ferries - 1. Cunard: 2. The Allen Line: 3. Inman Line: 4. National Line '; ' Starvation ' ; 'The International conference on Maritime Metrology ': ' The Annexation of New Guinea ' ; ' Emigration to South America ' ; 'Marine Inventions ' ; 'The commercial value of Human Life' ; ' The "Schiller" of Hamburg Wrecked 7th May 1875' ; etc etc. Overall a generally clean and tight complete copy for research reading etc - but not a collectors copy unless you have it repaired/rebound.
