Author remains anonymous but was named Frederick Arnold as denoted by a pencil inscription to the verso of the front endpaper.In a half calf binding with a beautiful decorative gilt spine and marbled boards. Features a full illustrated frontispiece and an engraved title page along with a number of full plate illustrations by J. O. Brown. Contemporary ownership inscription to the front blank. Externally lovely very minor shelfwear. Inscription to front endpaper denotes the author 'by Frederick Arnold' and an ownership inscription. Internally firmly bound pages bright and clean. William Wales named the Maskelynes Islands in southern Malekule Vanuatu after him while on James Cook's second voyage in Resolution. Trimmed within platemark on right edge of sheet. Sir Joseph Paxton 1803-1865 was an English gardener architect and Member of Parliament best known for designing The Crystal Palace. <br /> In 1831 Paxton published a monthly magazine The Horticultural Register. This was followed by the Magazine of Botany in 1834 the Pocket Botanical Dictionary in 1840 The Flower Garden in 1850 and the Calendar of Gardening Operations. Images of Australian plants were included in his publications esp the Magazine of Botany.Some very light handling creases and remains of erased pencil inscription below the title. Rare unknown

The upper two board corners and the upper corner of the front text block bumped leaving the pages lightly or slightly creased to that corner. Normal age toning to the endpapers.
