18300046431830. Full Straight-Grained Morocco. Very Good. An exquisite manuscript copy of plates from the 1644 work by Wencelaus Hollar. While a copy the pen-and-ink work here is absolutely exceptional requiring a loupe or magnifying glass to fully appreciate the niceties of detailing achieved by the artist copier. It is also clear that this copier did not merely trace the original work. Heightening the pen-and-ink work are touches of watercolor. 8vo. 173 by 117 mm. Unpaginated half-title page with a handwritten copy of the verse from "The Merchant of Venice entitled "The Folly of Fashion the Deceit of Ornament or Appearance" second title copied from the 1644 work followed by 36 mounted pen and ink copies of fashion etchings from the 1644 work and a final page with a drawing of a trophy and two musings written out. The drawings besides being meticulous with near-microscopic detail are austere with the pen and ink work heightened with only touches of flesh color for the women's faces and tiny dabs of gold for jewelry buttons and the like. The austerity we would stress is befitting the fashions represented as the early and mid-17th century was a time that garments tended to be more monochromatic and sober meant to suggest piety as any student of portraits from this era coincident with the Puritan Revolution and religious wars on the continent would have absorbed. And we would add the austerity is not just of the dress but also the expression on the women depicted here. The flesh color applied to the faces and also hands is just as nuanced as everything else about these portraits. There is a gradient of coloration capturing very realistically the actual pigment of human flesh. The one exception to the limited color usage is a depiction of a woman from Virginia a Native American whose bare garment is painted red and who is wearing jewelry that is captured with bolder applications of gold. This exotic specimen also shows a woman with a tattoo on her arms something that was completely alien from European cultures at the time. The Virginian is not the only non-European depicted however as there is a woman from Algiers a Moresco woman an Argentinian. Also shown is a Turkish woman and the dress shown is from different strata of the societies represented. Short cursive handwritten captions identify for us where the model is from. All the handwriting including on the title the poem etc. is rendered in a tight minute script. Unfortunately there is no indication who the artist copyist was other than the initials PC by several of the drawings. In the front there is an ownership inscription of an Elizabeth Cobbett. There is a watercolored bookplate with the Hillman family crest. unknown

Aunt Fanny's Picture Present Book

18595474London: N.P. 1859. First edition. An attractive but difficult to trace collection of children's lithographic ABC / Chapbooks from 1859. There are no publisher details and no titles to any of the works. The whole is made up of seven separate children's books. There are a total of 58 leaves in the work. The majority of these are printed in colour chromolithographic plates to one side only seven of the leaves are coloured text and printed on both sides which give us a total of 65 printed pages. Six of the seven are complete and one appears to lack two leaves. The seven works are as follows: 1 Animal ABC. Seven leaves with illustrations of animals and large letters below. 2 Animal ABC. Five leaves with four animals and text to each leaf. There are only A-P present so we suspect is missing two leaves. 3 Animal poems. Eight leaves with a large picture and a short verse. Numbered 1-8. 4 The naughty Chicken. A moral tale for children with a large picture and verses below in a red decorated frame. In typical Victorian style the naughty chicken is condemned to death by the court in London and is executed. The last plate appears to show the chicken being eaten! It is this tale which gave us the date for the volume as it illustrates the Penal Laws of London 1859. Eight numbered leaves. 5 Old mother Hubbard. Eight numbered leaves with a large picture title above and verse below. 6 Nursery Rhymes. There are seven leaves of chromo-lithographs quite a few to each page alternating with seveb leaves of text. The text leaves are printed to both sides so 14 pages Including a double page ABC. 7 Who killed Cock Robin. Seven leaves of colour lithograph with verses beneath. The whole is bound in a gilt and blind stamped decorated cover. A little rubbed and bumped. The spine appears to have been restored. The pages inside are in slightly darkened and foxed condition. Some small archival repairs to some page edges and reinforcement of the end papers. A fascinating collection. 25.5cm x 19cm. . Première édition. Une collection attrayante mais difficile à trouver d'ABC lithographiques pour enfants / livres de coloriage datant de 1859. Il n'y a aucune information sur l'éditeur ni aucun titre pour les œuvres. L'ensemble se compose de sept livres pour enfants distincts. L'ouvrage compte au total 58 feuilles. La plupart d'entre elles sont imprimées en chromolithographie couleur sur une seule face sept feuilles sont imprimées en couleur des deux côtés ce qui donne un total de 65 pages imprimées. Six des sept ouvrages sont complets et il semble manquer deux feuilles à l'un d'entre eux. Les sept ouvrages sont les suivants : 1 Animal ABC. Sept feuilles avec des illustrations d'animaux et de grandes lettres en dessous. 2 Animal ABC. Cinq feuilles avec quatre animaux et du texte sur chaque feuille. Seules les lettres A à P sont présentes nous soupçonnons donc qu'il manque deux feuilles. 3 Poèmes sur les animaux. Huit feuilles avec une grande image et un court poème. Numérotées de 1 à 8. 4 The naughty Chicken. Un conte moral pour enfants avec une grande image et des vers en dessous dans un cadre décoré de rouge. Dans le style victorien typique le poulet espiègle est condamné à mort par le tribunal de Londres et exécuté. La dernière planche semble montrer le poulet en train d'être mangé ! C'est ce conte qui nous a donné la date du volume car il illustre les lois pénales de Londres de 1859. Huit feuilles numérotées. 5 Old mother Hubbard. Huit feuilles numérotées avec une grande illustration le titre au-dessus et des vers en dessous. 6 Nursery Rhymes. Il y a sept feuilles de chromolithographies assez nombreuses sur chaque page alternant avec sept feuilles de texte. Les feuilles de texte sont imprimées des deux côtés soit 14 pages y compris une double page ABC. 7 Who killed Cock Robin. Sept feuilles de lithographies en couleur avec des vers en dessous. L'ensemble est relié dans une couverture décorée estampée à chaud et dorée. Légèrement frotté et abîmé. Le dos semble avoir été restauré. Les pages à l'intérieur sont légèrement noircies et rouillées. Quelques petites réparations archivistiques sur certains bords de pages et renforcement des pages de garde.
