A first edition history and topographical survey of Fulham and Hammersmith by Thomas Faulkner. The first edition of this work. Rebacked with contemporary tree calf boards with renewed calf spine.Illustrated with a frontispiece vignette to the title page engraved dedication folding genealogical table nine plates and numerous vignettes. Collated complete. This is one of three principal works known by Thomas Faulkner an English bookseller and topographer of West London whose local histories went on to be viewed as standard 19th-century references. The work covers the area's etymology roads agriculture gardens churches monuments historical events inhabitants and ancient houses. From the library of George Bird 1774-1851 a builder and bricklayer who resided in Brook Green Hammersmith. The Bird family were responsible for the construction of many local buildings including the earliest parts of Nazareth House and the Sacred Heart School the stonework of the first Hammersmith Bridge and Holy Trinity Church on Brook Green. The Birds were also active in civic development and public welfare and founded the West London Hospital in Hammersmith Road. The coat of arms was formerly placed above the gateway of 190 Shepherds Bush Road. With George's contemporary ownership inscription to the title page and with a presentation inscription to him from one Joseph Purdon the verso of the front free endpaper dated 1835. Rebacked with contemporary tree calf boards with renewed calf spine. Externally smart with slight rubbing to the boards and to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots throughout heaviest to the plates and facing pages which also have offsetting. Handling marks to folding map of Fulham. The second edition of this work. This second edition was dedicated to George Cadogan the British Royal Navy officer and politician.Signed by the author to the dedication page of Volume I 'To Mr C. J. Smith from the Author Thos. Faulkner'. C. J. Smith was a subscriber to the work.Complete in two volumes.These two volumes have been highly illustrated by a prior owner binding in many plates from different works. Volume I has a portrait tipped on the the verso to the front free endpaper and to the reverse of the frontispiece. Volume II with an extra illustration bound to the reverse and a newspaper clipping bound between pages 332 and 333.Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece four folding plates one colour plate and one-hundred and forty-five plates. Twelve plates in this volume have additional illustrations adhered to the reverse.Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece three folding plate one watercolour plate and one-hundred and forty-one plates. Nine plates in this volume have additional illustrations adhered to the reverse. The plate of George III facing page 290 has black glasses drawn on by a prior owner.With a prior owner's charming handmade booklet listing all of the plates in the work written by hand in ink throughout. This booklet lists all of the additional plates they adhered into the two volumes. The booklet is bound with a faded pink ribbon. Chelsea is now in South West London though it used to be rural to London. Written by Thomas Faulkner who was an English booksellers and topographer noted for his three topographical works on Chelsea Fulham and Kensington.Bookplate to the front pastedowns 'James Walsh. FSA: FRAS'. Bookplate to the recto to the front endpapers 'Walter Alexander'. Booksellers label to the front pastedown. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards with a pamphlet. Externally generally smart. Front board of Volume I may detach with further handling held by one cord only. Light rubbing to the boards and spines. Light bumping to the extremities. Small amount of loss to the spine labels. Small crack to the tail of the rear joint of Volume II. Rear hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Hinges of Volume II are starting but firm. Plate tipped on to the verso to the front free endpaper of Volume I. Folding plate from the ILN is adhered to the rear pastedown of Volume I. A little edgewear and a few marks to the wraps. Internally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd spot and mark. Plate tipped on to the reverse of the frontispiece of Volume I. Folding map to Volume I with a small closed tear. Sticker saying 'Chelsea' stuck to page 1 of Volume I and a 'Kings Road' sticker to page 43 of Volume I. Plate facing page 89 of Volume I with a short biography adhered to the head. Plate of Smollett facing page 272 of Volume I is detached but present. Plate of Joseph Bark facing page 181 is detached but present. The plate of George III facing page 290 has black glasses drawn on by a prior owner. Volume I has a portrait tipped on the the verso to the front free endpaper and to the reverse of the frontispiece. Volume II with an extra illustration bound to the reverse and a newspaper clipping bound between pages 332 and 333. Some of the plates are a little closely cropped though with no loss. A remarkable anti-slavery speech delivered on the floor of the Virginia state legislature by Representative Charles Faulkner. The previous year Nat Turner had led the slave insurrection in Southampton County Virginia profoundly realizing the worst nightmares of southern slave owners and the incident sparked the last effort in the South to abolish slavery. Faulkner from what would later become West Virginia led the fight in alliance with Thomas Jefferson's grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph to pass a bill that would have freed all children born of slave parents after July 4 1840. Had Faulkner succeeded Virginia and other southern border states would have been unlikely candidates for secession. The bill had much support but it eventually failed 73-58 owing in part to the malapportionment of the Virginia legislature in favor of Tidewater slave owners. Faulkner's stirring speech emphasized slavery's evil for whites: "It is an evil - it is an institution which presses heavily against the best interests of the state. It banishes free white labor - it exterminates the mechanic - the artizan - the manufacturer.It converts the energy of a community into indolence - its power into imbecility - its efficiency into weakness. Sir being thus injurious have we not a right to demand its extermination Shall society suffer that the slave-holder may continue to gather his crop of human flesh" A scarce and important document of anti-slavery sentiment in the South thirty years before secession.
