This is a volume from the Elzevier ten-volume series of the complete works of Marcus Tullius Cicero 106-43 BC. Books 7 and 8 are the complete Philosophicorum. This is book 2 only corresponding to Volume 8. Published in 1642 by Elsevir. First Edition Thus. Square and tight. Pages are clean and unmarked with almost no foxing. Bound in full reddish-brown leather. The spine is elaborately gilt decorated. Triple ruled borders on the front and rear covers. All gilt is still bright and shiny. Title page features a handsome engraved illustration i. e. the famous Elsevier tree printer's mark with the motto Non solus - not alone. SEE PHOTOS. Gorgeous marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Duodecimo. 2.75" wide by 5" tall. With the bookplate SEE PHOTOS of de Bourgevin Vialart de Moligny possibly Charles Paul Jean Baptiste de Bourgevin Vialart Count of Saint-Morys 1743-1795 who according to Wikipedia was adviser to the Grand Chamber of the Parliament of Paris designer and art collector. He died as a general of the Royal Army during the Quiberon expedition on the island of Houat in 1795. His highly important art collection including 12644 drawings was seized after his emigration in 1793 and handed over to the Louvre Museum in Paris in 1796-1797. Tchemerzine IX 332. ◆Trivial imperfections only: A VERY FINE COPY INSIDE AND OUT.<br/> <br/> In a very handsome binding by one of the most widely sought-after binders of the turn of the 20th century this is a beautifully preserved volume of verse by a founding member of the Académie française. A protégé of Malherbe Honorat de Bueil Seigneur de Racan 1589-1670 is primarily known for his elegant pastoral and religious poetry which as Britannica notes succeeds at "preserving the elegiac lyricism of an earlier age and foreshadowing the gentle melancholy of Alphonse de Lamartine." According to Tchemerzine the present work is "the most complete edition of Racan's religious works" and is in large part composed of his verse interpretations of the Psalms. The Hardy atelier produced luxurious volumes many of them armorial for a range of 19th century connoisseurs. Although we have not been able to identify the coat of arms on the covers the crown with pearls indicates that the owner bore the title of "Comte." Among other connections in the bibliopegic world Henri Hardy employed Jean Marius Michel as a gilder near the start of his career; he also worked with Charles Meunier and Émile Mercier before meeting Robert Hoe in Paris and agreeing to come to New York in early 1896 to serve as foreman of the newly established Club Bindery. In 1917 Hardy along with his compatriots Leon Maillard and Gaston Pilon formed the French Binders with the stated intention of "bringing together distinguished members of the craft to afford them opportunity to work under the most advantageous conditions." The present item is an excellent example of Hardy's earlier work is in outstanding condition inside and out and makes an excellent impression on the shelf. The bookplate on the flyleaf indicates that it was once owned by the French poet Auguste P. Garnier 1885-1966 who later ran the Garnier publishing house established by his family in 1833. Bound in exceptionally fine binding and in very good condition with the bookplates of Daniel Henry Holmes an avid book collector. This edition certainly is one of the rarest being that it is a first issue. A pirate copy came out the year before in 1662 and all proceeds from the sale of the book by the thief were recovered by Butler. This attractive printing and wonderfully bound copy of Butler's mock epic in octosyllabic couplets its three parts first published in 1663 1664 and 1678. Modeled after Don Quixote the work satirizes the hypocrisy and self-seeking of the Presbyterians and independents represented by the title character Hudibras and his servant Ralpho demonstrating the pairs greed stupidity cowardice and duplicity. Butler a Colonel in the Cromwellian army is involved in any number of various comic misadventures and Butler is squarely pointing at Oliver Cromwell and his lot as Butler was and remained a confirmed Royalist and Anglican King Henry VIII's Anglican Church.<br /><br />This mock epic became the rage of its time and was followed by nearly 27 editions that included later engraved illustrations to highlight the comedic adventures of the two. In the end of this volume are also <br />found the Letter from the Knight to his Lady and a corresponding letter from the Lady to the Knight. </p> Marriot, Richard hardcover

Near Fine the label perhaps refreshed at a later date with the bookplate of Gower Earl Gower front paste down and Gower's coat-of-arms printed verso of title page of Steps to the Temple Lord Gower having obviously had this copy bound to his specifications. TWO VOLUMES bound as one. "Steps to the Temple" and "The Delights of the Muses" are actually the 3rd editions even though stating second edition while "Carmen Deo Nostro" and "Poemata et Epigrammata Quae Scripsit Latina & Graeca" are both second editions. John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower PC 1694 -1754 was an English Tory politician and peer who twice served as Lord Privy Seal from 1742 to 1743 and 1744 to 1754. Leveson-Gower also served in the Parliament of Great Britain where he sat in the House of Lords as a leading member of the Tories prior to switching his political affiliation and serving in various Whig-led government ministries until his death in 1754. Rare first edition of the "Zeeland Nightingale" perhaps the most intriguing Dutch songbook of the early 17th century both from the literary point of view as from the point of view of book illustration and printing. The work was intended to spread the glory of the province of Zeeland and includes contributions of 18 poets born or living in Zeeland. Produced by the literal society of Middelburg it showcases the cultural identity of Zeeland through love lyrics devotional poetry and moral verse. The work continued to inspire for many centuries as the present copy was owned by the English explorer Frank Linsley James 1851-1890 and the Frysian art collector and notary Nanne Ottema 1874-1955.The nightingale was a symbol for talented poets and this work was to show the world that Zeeland was the place to be for modern artists. The initiator was most likely Jacob Cats. Contributions came from Cats himself Anna Roemer Visscher Philibert van Borssele Adriaen Valerius Johannis de Bruyne and many others. Adriaen van de Venne contributed a love song Zeeusche Mey-clacht accompanied by a beautiful illustration of a well-dressed young man leaning over a stream and mirroring himself in the water engraved by W. de Passe. At the end to promote sales a newly finished work by Adriaen van de Venne the brother of the publisher was added Tafereel van Sinne-Mal. In this work is found the beautiful engraving of the "Middelburgsche Lauwerhof" the fine garden at the back of his brother's printing office and in the accompanying song all things sold at his brother's bookshop are listed such as maps and prints paintings and lacquered ware compasses and nautical instruments watches etc. Other fine and interesting plates are the mussel-seller and the knife-grinder especially dedicated to Magdalena de Passe.From the early days the province of Zeeland represented within the new Dutch Republic a cultural centre of its own. At the time the most popular and respected Dutch poet Jacob Cats resided in Zeeland and declared himself very satisfied with his Middelburg printer. Afterwards Huygens had some of his works printed at Zeeland then Anna Roemer Visscher came to visit and exchanged poems with the Zeeland poets. Cats' brilliant illustrator Adriaen van de Venne also moved to Middelburg. His brother Jan Pietersz van de Venne had already established a flourishing business there as publisher and bookseller allowing the Zeeland intellectuals poets and artists to meet. With the bookplate of explorer Frank Linsley James 1851-1890 and the manuscript ownership annotation of Rev. Henry White of Lichfield dates unknown dated 1819 on the front pastedown the ex libris stamp of Nanne Ottema 1874-1955 on the second flyleaf. The vellum is slightly soiled. The leaves are lightly browned occassionally slightly foxed in the margins the lower corner of the last 2 pages has been restored.
