Many merchants and professional men will attest as to the character of the boys they are fortunate enough in securing from the directory. The fact that they are not permitted to go out at night makes them in great demand. He was a dreamer of the days." While Russo p.65 notes "There exist a number of presentation copies of the Bowen-Merrill Company edition with an inserted leaf bearing the author's inscription dated October 9th 1896" a copy inscribed by Riley to his brother dated OCTOBER 7TH 1896 as is this copy is referenced in a footnote at the bottom of p. 65: "The 'Biographical Edition' Vol. 4 Notes p. 551 contains the author's poetical inscription in a copy of the book presented to his brother October 7 1896." Thus making this copy possibly one of only 2 that were signed and dated at this earliest of possible dates. A First Edition First State copy Near Fine slight wear at spine ends. A period newspaper clipping affixed to front paste down that explains this copy's unique significance - "Our readers will remember that we spoke several months ago of the letter and book which Mr. Orange Frazer had had from James Whitcomb Riley in response to the sending of a copy of one of the poet's early poems which Mr. Frazer had preserved. Immediately on the appearance of Mr. Riley's new book ' The Child World' sic he forwarded Mr. Frazer a beautiful copy of it the title page inscribed as follows see above . The quoted line is the first of the poem which Mr. Frazer had sent him and refers to 'Noey Bixler' one of the principal characters of the book who could make all sorts of things but could not even whistle 'Bonny Doon'.Mr. Frazer very much appreciates the volume of poems and the remembrance Mr. Riley bears of the favor he was able to do him." Cloth with just the slightest hint of wear and soiling; internally fresh and clean.<br/> <br/> This is an excellent copy of a very personal collection of poetry by a female writer of the late 19th century offered in a signed limited edition. Born in Northern Ireland Frances Margaret Milne 1846-1910 spent most of her life in San Luis Obispo California where she worked as a librarian and volunteered tirelessly for social causes. Much of her writing was political in nature: the 1893 publication "A Woman of the Century" a collection of biographies of "leading American women in all walks of life" said she had "made a profound study of economic and political questions and with pen and voice . . . and had aided in extending the discussion of the relations of progress and poverty and of individuals and society." She also published a number of fictional and poetic works; this was her second collection of poems. They primarily deal with themes of love and loss and while the poems have some of the formulaic gentility one would expect from a writer of this period and background the genuine emotions behind them are clear. By turns ebullient and poignant the text has works—such as the poem "To My Beloved at rest May 11th 1804"—that reflect the grief and joy of Milne's intense personal experiences. Copies of the book are not so readily available especially in the condition seen here. Charles Wells Moulton unknown

Head and tail of spine missing to 2cm. Spine is brittle with a single horizontal break. Stitched textblock binding remains sound. Fragile in condition but still a readable copy. A solicitor at Charlton Victoria Australia Sherard's poems were first published in the anthology Australian Poets 1788-1888: Being a Selection of Poems Upon All Subjects edited by Douglas B.W. Decoration Above Shows A Person Setting Type With A Printing Press In The Background. Per The Library Of Congress The Weekly Roundabout Frankfort Ky. 1877-1882 Citing Information From The University Of Kentucky Lexington The Frankfort Weekly Roundabout Was One Of Many Newspapers Covering Kentucky'S State Capital And The Surrounding Area During The Early 20Th Century. Established By Claude Buckley In September 1877 The Paper Claimed To Be "Devoted To Local And Society News." The Weekly Roundabout Was Popular From Its Start And By July 1880 Boasted The "Largest Circulation In City And County." Buckley Was A Resourceful Businessman And His Careful Handling Of The Roundabout Was A Major Factor In The Paper'S Success. The Initial Funding For The Publication Came Solely From Advertisements. As A Result The First Volume Containing 11 Issues Was Offered Free Of Charge To The Public Assuring A Loyal Paying Readership For Subsequent Volumes. After The First Volume 25 Cents Would Secure A Subscription Which Offered Readers Four To Eight Pages Of News Every Saturday. The Roundabout'S Devotion To The Citizens Of The Franklin County Area Was Evident. In Addition To The Agricultural Reports Personal News And Serial Literature Often Published In Turn-Of-The- Century Newspapers The Weekly Roundabout Included News About Daily Occurrences As Well Such As Correspondence From Neighborhoods And Surrounding Towns. The Paper Even Detailed Monthly Statistical Reports Of Sunday School Attendance At Area Churches As Well As Their Tithe Amounts And Visitors.The Weekly Roundabout Published An Array Of Unique And Specialized Material Too. In 1881 Campbell Edmonson James' "A Short History Of Franklin County Kentucky"-A Historical And Statistical Report Of The County-Appeared In The Paper. Editor Buckley Also Composed Historical Content Of Note. In October 1877 He Began A Series On The Schools Of Frankfort Covering The Histories Of Institutions Such As The City School And Greenwood Female Seminary. Buckley Served As The Editor Of The Weekly Roundabout For The Entirety Of The Paper'S Existence. In June 1878 He Was Joined By George A. Lewis Former Reporter For The Kentucky Yeoman Another Frankfort Paper. Two Years Later In 1880 Lewis Bought Buckley'S Share Of The Paper.
