An ephemeris plural: ephemerides; from the Greek word ἐφήμερος ephemeros ìdailyî is a table of values that gives the positions of astronomical objects in the sky at a given time or times. Different kinds of ephemerides are used for astronomy and astrology. Even though this was also one of the first applications of mechanical computers an ephemeris will still often be a simple printed table. Contents in this copy include a Calendar with gold numbers a Sun cycle and Age of the Moon and dates for important liturgical holidays among them Ash Wednesday Easter and Pentecost. Mild binding edgewear though tight and internally quite nice. Handsome first edition of this slim satirical poem one of the last works by the short-lived English poet and satirist 1732-64. In this name-dropping attack Churchill supports his good friend the radical politician and journalist John Wilkes 1725-97 and satirizes statesman John Montagu the 4th Earl of Sandwich 1718-92. Ironically this hails from the library of one of America's greatest candidates -- Adlai E. Stevenson II 1900--65 Illinois governor and two-time presidential candidate. An interesting miscellany; as one would expect from the title a large number of the poems are of a distinctly political or economic bent and include such works as "The South- Sea Whim" "An Excellent New Song called Credit Restored." Smith 1771-1798 a physician and author who died at 28 of yellow fever was an active member of the "Hartford Wits" literary group and a close associate of the American novelist Charles Brockden Brown who was living with Smith in Litchfield when this anthology of 70 poems was compiled. Modern scholarship has placed Brown among the contributors of anonymous poems specifically as the author of "Utrum Horum Mavis Elige" on pages 222-224.
