The American editor insisted upon the change of title alleging an outspoken Jewish name would have a repulsing effect on the American reader and buyer. This shows remarkably an American publishers judgment of the degree of racial prejudice among his countrymen. Paris May 3d 1909 Dr. M. Nordau.†Max Nordau was a Hungarian-born doctor who settled in Paris in 1880 where he because a best-selling author not for his controversial works of social and artistic criticism and was a co-founder with Theodore Herzl of the Zionist Movement. Nordau helped draft the Basle Program at the first Zionist Congress in 1897 and played a major role in subsequent congresses. This book is the first translation in English which was originally published in German in 1898 and it concerns the question of intermarriage of Jews and Christians. All edges marbled. Handwriting in pen and some pencil to approximately one half of the pages; 67 closely written pages in total. Approx. 10000 words /-. <br/><br/>Neat and meticulous handwritten daily journal written by a Halifax rabbi serving as chaplain for the Canadian armed forces: for one recorded service "42 soldiers present. 1 airman. Did not have chance to notify Air Force nor Navy re: Services." Beginning in September 1944 and ending in May 1945 the author records his public activities and services at the Robie St. Synagogue and elsewhere e.g.: served as cantor but unsatisfied with his own singing; only cake & coffee at the Purim social -- "Hamentaschen didn't arrive"; his advice and counsel to individual soldiers "Spoke to Major Lyons re Victor Morgan / promised to get him transferred so he can study Hebrew"; and the occasional purely personal note "Deanna Durbin is still tops." <br /> <br />The journal's author names many officers and peers though not himself: "lunch with Greenspan" likely refers to Rabbi Abraham Greenspan of Halifax; the "Capt. Dr. Cass" who read the Torah "fairly well. He also blew the Shofar" is certainly Rabbi Samuel Cass. Visiting English evangelist Bryan Green gave a speech "under the auspices of Br. Ministery of Information. No revelation"; <br /> <br />The rabbi records speeches and discussions -- sometimes heated -- on "Assimiliation" Jewish denominations Jewish education "How to Get Home for the High Holidays" as well as his trips to military camps and hospitals in Windsor and Debert advocacy for men A.W.O.L. or otherwise awaiting discipline or sentencing; distribution of books and pamphlets; and continual efforts to maintain and improve attendance at services. They raised the necessary funds and turned their attention to the nine million Jews along the Eastern Front. 1904273940San Francisco: Pinkerton National Detective Agency 1904. unbound. 10.5 x 8.75 inches issued by the Pinkerton National Detective Agency San Francisco California announcing a $250 Reward for the arrest of Abe G. Schwartz charged with the crime of Embezzlement described as a 27-year-old bookkeeper with "Pronounced Jewish features." He's a "quick nervous walker" who "usually smokes cigars." Also he is an "inveterate gambler" who "will probably frequent pool rooms race tracks and poker games." Further details note that Mr. Schwartz has a dark complexion and a prominent nose. "If located arrest and notify by wire the nearest of the above listed offices." Pinkerton Regional Wanted Posters are particularly scarce as private persons would often put up the reward money offered by the Agency. The Pinkertons in turn would then function as Bounty Hunters.
