Contains an article about the French ironclad La Gloire and the English ironclad ship built in response the Warrior; and the first appearance of: chapters 1-14 of William Thackeray's final novel The Adventures of Philip on his Way through the World and his Roundabout Papers nos. X-XIII; chapters 37-48 of Anthony Trollope's Framley Parsonage; the essay Toilers and Spinsters by Anne Isabella Thackeray later Ritchie which appeared in an updated version in the book Toilers and Spinsters and Other Essays published in 1874; chapters 1-6 of The Stage Queen and the Squire by Scottish novelist Henrietta Keddie 1827-1914; chapters 1-4 of Agnes of Sorrento by Harriet Beecher Stowe; and the poem Little Mattie by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. At the head of the first page of the Thackeray a former owner and critic has written "Humbug by Thackery." Scarce.
