Blue stapled wrappers printed in white and gold b/w illustrations from photographs throughout. Light extremity wear. Program from the 1956 AWTAR which began at the San Mateo County Airport in San Mateo California and ended at Bishop Airport in Flint Michigan. The race included 50 pilots many but not all of whom flew with co-pilots; short bios and pictures of each pilot and her co-pilot where applicable are included here along with brief articles on the airports and locations at each end of the race handicapping the challenge of the race itself etc.Scarce. A few ink notations and underlinings in the text but mostly clean with center gathering detached. An unrecorded pamphlet containing numerous "historical sketches" of the various groups within the 13th District Baptist Association Women's Auxiliary in Shreveport Louisiana. The work contains a history of the Antioch Baptist Church Missionary Society which began in 1889 and sketches on the women of the Broadway Missionary Church Mission Band the Lakeside Baptist Church the Little Union Missionary Baptist Church Mission Society and Woman's Missionary Union and many many more groups from area churches. The text is illustrated throughout with dozens of photographs of notable officers members and other figures within the groups various churches and more. An excellent snapshot of Shreveport-area women's church groups with no copies in OCLC. unknown

Written by Emma E. Walker M.D. a female physician and member of the New York Academy of Medicine who published several women and girl's health guides. Beauty Through Hygiene is a guide to health and hygiene for girls discussing sports and exercise including exercises in housework weight complexion care of skin and hair care during menstruation remedies and for common ailments and illnesses. <br /> <br /> Emma Elizabeth Walker received her A.B. from Smith College in 1887 and earned an M.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1898. Later that year she opened her medical practice in New York City. Walker authored Beauty through Hygiene 1905 "Pretty Girl Questions" in Ladies Home Journal and many articles and pamphlets for both popular and medical audiences. She lectured widely on the topics of personal and social hygiene and was a member of numerous medical and professional organizations. Ex-library with spine label interior pastedown and pocket. Minor general fading and staining to the covers. Cloth scuffed and worn along the extremities and hinges. Walker's journals mainly focus on the ailments that primarily affect women where most male physicians had improperly diagnosed or treated making her guides a historically and contextually important field of study. unknown

Verso with “Tribune Engraving Room†stamp dated November 1937 two articles featuring the photo with stamps dated March 1936 and December 1937 barcode sticker and manuscript reading “Josephine Bakerâ€. Marginal wear; excellent. A photograph of Josephine Baker seated with two women identified verso as Countess de Roissey de Sales and “Mme. Schneiderâ€. Baker 1906–1975 was an American-born French dancer singer actress. She was born in St. Louis Missouri and performed as a young teen in the chorus line for several Broadway musicals. In 1925 she moved to Paris later telling a journalist that “I just couldn’t stand Americaâ€1 where her dancing quickly made her a star. In the mid-1930s Baker briefly returned to the United States where this photograph was taken; she opened a short-lived nightclub in Manhattan and starred in The Ziegfeld Follies without commercial success. She returned to France in 1937 married Jean Lion and renounced her American citizenship. 1945174471945. This 1945 booklet contains the cut out models for Captain Marvel Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr. who could be assembled into 3D paper action figures. Reed and Associates 1945. 12" x 9" inches. Action figure height around 8.5" x 5" inches. Each of the three character models are intact and ready for assembly even after 75 years. Comes with assembly instructions. Mary Marvel was one of the first female characters in any comic book franchise. Today Captain Marvel is a woman and the subject of the 2019 film Captain Marvel as well as being included in several other installations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 1943List3433Reading Vermont 1943. 156 pp with approximately 207 poems plus a 1934 rejection letter from Perry Mason & Co. Spine broken cover nearly detached and pages coming detached; some toning and wear to edges of pages with smell. Overall very good minus. A book of poems by Vermonter Mary S. Fay likely 1875–1968. Fay’s topics include friends’ special events; current events such as “Titanic†May 15 1912 and “America We Are Ready†1915 presumably concerning World War I; nature themes and seasonal poems; and especially nostalgic and sometimes defensive poems about Vermont including “Strike Not The Land That Shelters†which was “Written on learning slurs cast in Vermont by alliens who come to Vermont to resideâ€.<br /> <br /> However Fay sometimes took up expressly political causes in her poetry. For instance in April 1911 she penned “Equal Rights Proclaimingâ€:<br /> <br /> “Sister Woman look ahead / For there dawns the gladsome time / When thy queen Equal rights treads / O’er the land with light sublime: / O raise your voice on high / Loudly in sweet acclaim / ‘Till they reach yonder sky / And there the rights proclaim. . Sister Woman of today / Thou have striven long and well / Thou’ve waited in twilight grief / For the ring of Freedoms bell. / Though at times all seem’d as lost / Thou upheld thy banner height; / And you counted not the cost / But press’d onward thru’ the night.â€<br /> <br /> In March 1915 she took up the topic again in a poem titled “Enfranchisementâ€:<br /> <br /> “Fled the years of servile shame! / Woman ‘tis this hour at last / Honor thy glorious name / Spread thy banner to the blast. / Brave my sisters in thy might / Steadfast yet and valiant be; / On thy noble standard write / Equality law and liberty. . Enfranchisement thus we vow / Shall be ours ere we abate / Our strife which thru and thru / Of our life’s blood we consecrate / Upon the altar upon the shield / Equality for all eternity; / Shall be ours at home afield:- / Equality law and liberty.â€<br /> <br /> Despite the efforts of groups such as the Vermont Equal Suffrage Association formed in the early 1880s Vermont women did not get the right to vote until the rest of the country did ratifying the Nineteenth Amendment in 1921.<br /> <br /> She also writes an intriguing more general protest poem seemingly for labor rights titled “Justice Where†August 1911:<br /> <br /> “Tho labor’s toils in day by day / Beneath the heat and the cold; / While the oppresser sits in grandest state / With a mere pittance to pay / To keep hunger from the fold / And in false pride his tyranny relate. / Awake all ye toilers / Drive at the oppresor bold! / Unfurl thy glorious standard of Right / O’er many a dear home fold / And thus ever protect it with thy might.â€<br /> <br /> Another of Fay’s causes was temperance; in 1914 she wrote “A Temperance Boy†dedicated to “six year old Clark A. Ritchieâ€:<br /> <br /> “A little temperance boy am I / And proudly its banner I will fly. / Pure cold water is what I drink / And its the best of all I think. / A big promise don’t expect of me / for I’m only a little boy you see.â€<br /> She objects to smoking as well writing in “Why is it†1932 that “I must relate / smoking I hate. / ‘Be a sport girls’ / That is the cry / If in the whirl / They are a bit shy.â€<br /> <br /> Overall a charming document of a woman’s progressive politics expressed in verse. unknown

Oblong 4to. 24 original photographs all preserved in archival mylar sleeves sized 6.25 x 7 in. up to 8 x 10 in. some w/ photographer’s imprint w/in negative others w/ manuscript captions added a few w/ annotations and/or photographer’s instructions on versos all with bright strong contrast a few w/ offsetting from previous mounting on versos and one w/ very small pinholes at corners from prior mounting. Recent cloth binder stamping front cover excellent grouping. These photographs vividly document the dance and music studio operated by Annabelle Knowles reflecting the fast evolving costumes and aesthetics of the twilight of the Roaring 20’s as the U.S. descended into the Great Depression. These photos also clearly reflect the influence of Gus Edwards 1879-1945 vaudeville’s premier producer of kiddie acts and who had produced and released the shorts “Kiddie Revue†in 1930 and 1931. His influence was not only driven by his songs “By the Light of the Silvery Moon & “School Days†but also discovering such stars as Groucho Marx Eddie Cantor Mae Murray Sally Rand and many others. The images depict girls in two-piece outfits in front of Art Deco staging for “Body and Soulâ€; bare-backed girls in Flapper Era inspired costumes for chorus line “Kiddie Revueâ€; song and dance routines featuring Ronald Chetwood in top hat with Marcile Shillito Virginia Collins and chorus line in Jazz Age era costumes and canes; and several show Barbara Jane Wicks Shirley Jay Mulkey and Sunny Dentler in Spanish inspired costumes for “Baby Vanities.†Another shows adolescent boy and girl dance team in an “Apache†dance inspired costume number. The Hollywood College of Music Dance & Fine Arts offered classes and instruction in all ages with the last few photos showing teenage girls in chorus line with short hair coquettish expressions and teamwork or chorus line numbers. Annabelle Knowles 1900-1989 was a musician and dancer who founded the Hollywood College of Music Dancing & FIne Arts at 4112 NE Sandy Blvd. some time in the late 1920’s. Most of the street directory references focus on 1929-1932 and her British-America theatre-director husband at the time Vincent Knowles 1883-1944 worked at the studio as well. Baker 1882-1972 was a longtime commercial studio photographer in Portland OR who had initially begun as a photographer with noted tourist travel guide Howard Eaton photographing tours through National Pakrs. Beem 1892-1984 was founder and photographer at Granada Studio located in the 1930’s at 515 Swetland Building in Portland. Centlivere 1878-1964 owned and operated La Vere Photo Shoppe and Photo Craft Studios on Sandy Blvd. in Portland for nearly all of his career. We could find no similar collections or photographs or even references to Annabelle Knowles and very few examples of any of these three photography studios in institutional holdings. 193361492Tacoma Lakota Beach & Seattle WA: Fay Muridge 1933-1985. 8vo. 230 pp unpaginated. With ink sketches pencil sketches watercolour paintings drawings inserted and tipped-in photos business cards drawings & paintings in process clippings and even a 3 pp. ALS from Fay to her mother Naomi Muridge 1878-1967 on Elysees-Star Hotel stationery dated June 1960. Blue cloth enhanced with a Areovias Reforma precursor to Aeromexico sticker and laminated over later some edgewear rubbing still a VG exemplar. This outstanding artist’s manuscript sketchbook traces the development of this noted Seattle/Tacoma artist and window display designer from high school into the 1980’s. The opening pages dated 1933-1934 for her Architecture class at Stadium High School in Room 400 indicate an early advanced skill set with architectural renderings details house plans and more. At some point about 1950 following her divorce she restarts her career as a window designer for the Bon Marche and as contract artist filling the notebook over the succeeding 35 years with ideas paintings sketches. and pen & ink nude sketches at the end from her Sketch Classes in 1952. She documents her trip to Mexico in 1954 with a sketch of the engine cowling and then details of a Chinese Garden in Mexico the Iglesia de Santa Prisca in Taxco Mexico the Taberna del Greco and architectural details she comes upon. She appears to have subsequently stopped off in Los Angeles for an extended inspiration tour as she includes 20 pages of quick sketches of display cases window displays floor display equipment and lighting at various department stores and retailers including Robinsons Haggerty’s Bullocks Saks Fifth Ave. and Mildred Moore in Beverly Hills. Together with quick sketches of your 7-year old daughter Fay Marie 1947-2018 at ballet class in 1952 she has also included three Christmas-related sketches apparently related to her work on Bon Marche holiday windows. This sketchbook also contains several full watercolour paintings and dozens of sketches in colour with water colour paintings of the Muckleshoot Indian Missionary Church June 18 1952; Spring Gultch Campsite - Bitterroot River; Big Horn Mountains -- S.E. Sheridan June 20 1983; Near Sun Dance Wyoming along Hwy I-90 East 1983; Big Hole Country Wisdom MT 1983 and many others some showing progression. Muridge 1917-2007 was born in California but then grew up in Seattle and Lakota Beach near Tacoma WA and during the 1930’s after attending the University of Washington she was a popular window display designer for the Bon Marche often creating elaborate automata and manikins. She married Ray Suttles in 1941 and was divorced with custody of her daughter by 1950 designing windows & floor displays for Bon Marche in Seattle and Tacoma Frederick & Nelson and Bremer’s in Bremerton WA. She traveled extensively taking her daughter on the Cunard Line Queen Elizabeth in 1958 and again in 1960 to Paris leaving her daughter with her mother as indicated in the laid-in ALS. She was also known not only for her displays for Northwest Orient airlines but well-known as well for creating “cachets†for envelope covers and post cards often with military themes. Elizabeth Headley was one of the pennames used by American author Betty Cavanna 1909-2001 who published many works for teens and children from the early 1940s into the late 1980s. The ups and downs of Diane's sophmore year in high school have made this a perennial favorite. This is the first edition with illustrations by Janet Smalley of a book reissued several times with other illustrators. This edition is very scarce. Book is in Very Good Condition: ends of spine and corners lightly rubbed; "Vo. 31" written at lower edge of front free endpaper; top page edges slightly soiled and discolored; pages are clean and tight. Dust jacket is in Fair Condition: loss at ends of spine corners and along flap folds; lightly soiled; the red has faded; no loss of printing or illlustration. Macrae-Smith Co hardcover

Silver and silver copy prints the images measuring 6 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches 15.9 x 11.4 cm. and slightly smaller and the reverse the sheets 7 x 5 inches 17.8 x 12.7 cm. two measuring 4 1/4x 3 1/2 inches 10 x 8.9 cm. the sheets slightly larger many with letter or numeric hand stamps and/or notations in pencil and four with the subjects identified in ink on verso. Someone has outlined many of the fighters a bit hard to notice unless under a bright light. An interesting assembly of photographs of women fighters likely viewed as distasteful at the time. She also observes in Havre Montana the African-American “Twenty-Fourth United States Infantry came aboard. . . stalwart colored soldiers who will do credit to the uniforms they wear. . . how many of these brave men would return from the deadly Philippines.†She writes details about the Salish Northwest Coast Indian legends the First Nations peoples’ potlatches in British Columbia and their banning by the Provincial government along with making frequent mentions of Japanese-Americans Chinese-Americans and more. The couple visits the Muir Glacier Alaska gold fields Walla Walla in Washington State as well as Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks. Peck 1850-1935 noted mountain climber adventurer and suffragette first climbed Mount Shasta in 1888 ascended the Matterhorn in 1895 peaks in Mexico founded the American Alpine Club and even raised a Votes for Women pennant on Peru’s Mount Coropuna in 1911 at the age of 61. This amazing photo and ephemera archive offers an invaluable visual record of a young Flushing NY ice skater performing at Rockefeller Center with Sonja Henie’s ice shows off-Broadway cabaret and night club venue during World War II and post-War New York. Munster 1924-2016 was one of the thousands of young girls inspired to become professional ice skaters by Sonia Henie’s ice skating movies ice shows glittering costumes and production numbers. By 1941 Munster was appearing in “It Happens on Ice†which ran for 386 performances and included such ice skating performers as Dorothy Allan Jo Ann Dean Paul Castle Edwina Blades and Mary Jane Yeo. Photos in the archive show her early practice sessions as a teenager in Flushing Queens NY signed photos from Betty Atkinson Paul Castle and other stars who appeared in the production along with newspaper clippings and program. Within two years she was appearing in the Iridium Room Ice Shows which were twice nightly affairs and designed for before & after Broadway shows featuring a 20 foot square ice rink and often elaborate sets. She would perform in the “Newfangles†Ice Show at the Terrace Room alongside Carol Lynne Rudy Richards Dorothy Lewis Bob & Peggy White; “Ice Capers†at The Bowman Room in 1944 at the Biltmore Hotel; the “Circus Haze Ice Review†at the Hotel Roosevelt; and finally the long running “Hats Off to Ice†which ran for 889 performances from 1944 through 1946 and was Henie’s most popular show also represented in this collection by the souvenir Center Theatre Orchestra Seat Stub for the first performance in June 1944. The Iridium Room and other New York supper club ice shows featured live music during and after the war often featuring Freddie Miller Cab Calloway -- represented here in the archive with a signed photo showing Cab and his band dedicated to Sharlee The Harmonicats -- another signed photo all signed by the trio Gus Martel and others thriving through 1947. After a cabaret tax was imposed by the city on the supper clubs offering live entertainment hotels across New York eliminated the very popular ice skating shows. Of additional interest are the many production photos showing performance practices publicity shots while dressed in elaborate costumes the chorus lines of male and female ice skaters and the tremendous stage backdrops for such productions as Hats on Ice. Some of the photos show Sharlee Munster and her future husband Ray Blow in skates in costume along with many of their costars in these large productions. Sharlee had tremendous drive and in addition to her passion for skating and performing was inspired to become a pilot and at 18 years old began flying lessons 2-3 times a week weather permitting often working around her show and social schedule. There are photos of her at the Bendix airfield her standing beside a Piper J-3 Cub in which she had purchased a half-interest and successfully completed her first solo flight at Lime Ridge Airport in Poughquag NY August 11 1944 with Norman Sylvia as her flight instructor. She joined the Women Fliers Club and began studying and taking the tests for a commercial pilot’s rating intending to become a charter pilot after the War. Following the closing of most of the ice shows in New York Sharlee and her cousin Ray Munster became ski instructors fencing instructors and performed in ice shows at at the famed Concord Resort Hotel in the Borscht Belt part of the Catskills. In January 1948 she marries one of her fellow skaters Raymond Kenneth Blow 1924-1992 who had also appeared in many of Sonja Henie’s productions at Rockefeller Center as well as the Roxy Theatre and as a couple continued living in the family apartment on Kissena Blvd. through 1950 while Ray performed. By 1952 the young couple and their son Greg had moved to an apartment in Beverly Hills CA with photos showing the family frolicking and fishing at the California beaches visiting Palm Desert in 105 degree heat the opening of Disneyland and more. This absorbing classic memoir still in print in German relates in vivid language the desolation of Svalbard -- Spitsbergen covered in snow and rock and the few shrubs animals and impact of the unearthly Moon looming over the landscape. Ritter 1897-2000 was a watercolour artist and her paintings of the Arctic are now housed in the Svalbard Museum in Longyearbyen after being donated by her daughter Karen Ritter in 2018. First edition of this well-illustrated and excellent memoir documenting amenities and sights along the Lincoln Highway considered one of the first full length travel accounts on transcontinental motoring of their 1914 trip. The Lincoln Highway was newly inaugurated as one of the first transcontinental highways and the association ramrodded by Carl Fisher and then Henry Joy had launched the coast-to-coast rock highway for visitors to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915 later to be enjoyed by automobile travelers during the Roaring 20’s. Effie Price Gladding 1865-1947 details their arrival from a three-year round the World Tour via Asia and Hawaii into San Francisco Bay and subsequent drives along 600 miles of the El Camino Real and then continuing Eastward through Nevada Utah Wyoming Colorado Nebraska Iowa Illinois Ohio Pennsylvania and eventually to New York. She has included many tips to women travelers at the rear of this account and would later write the foreword to the Lincoln Highway association’s first road guide directed to women motorists. Two date from the 1960s in Miami and two date from the 1940s in Cleveland. 4 Silver gelatin photographs. The two from the 1960s measure 4" x 5." while the two from the 1940s measure 2.75" x 4.25". All have front shots and profile shots making a total of 8 images. All images are in black and white. The two from the 1960s have names on the verso: "Beverly Ann Williams" in the photo dated 11-28-1965 and "Pearl Mason" dated 1963 on the other. The Photograph of "Pearl Mason" also lists a weightan address and the alias "Pearl Elizabeth Wiggins" on the verso in pen. The two photographs from the 1940s do not have names on the verso. One is dated 4-17-45 from the Cleveland Ohio Police Department and features a woman in her 30s wearing a white shirt staring blankly ahead. The other is dated 10-27-1944 from the Cleveland Ohio Police Department and features a woman in her late 20s wearing her hair up and in a blazer-style jacket. This archive is an interesting time capsule and is overall in very good condition. unknown
