In the original French.First published in 1888 this novel is the work of Sibylle Aimee Marie-Antoinette Gabrielle de Riquetti de Mirabeau the French writer who wrote under the pseudonym 'Gyp'.Illustrated throughout by 'Marold'. Gyp wrote humorous sketches and novels which denounced her own fashionable society as well as the French republic's political class. Because of her unpopular opinions the comtesse was the victim of several attempts on her life as well as of a sensational kidnapping. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to spine head and tail with discolouration to back strip. Otherwise externally excellent. Internally firmly bound. It was Mercy-Argenteau's responsibility to strengthen the alliance between France and Austria bringing around the marriage between Marie Antoinette and the Dauphin later Louis XVI.The letters in this volume date from 1770 when Marie left Austria to 1774 when she became the Queen of France.Volume One only out of three volumes. In the original full vellum binding. Externally generally smart. Some light wear to the extremities and light marks and rubbing to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Pierre de Nolhac 1859-1936 became curator of the Museum in the Palace of Versailles in 1892 and founded the chair of art history within the Ecole due Louvre in 1910. He wrote several books about Marie Antoinette and played a major role in restoring the collections at Versailles including the furniture which had been dispersed during the Revolution.
