A name with a date 1895 is printed on the front free fly leaf. Interior pages are clean. Mollie Fancher d.1916 was a Brooklyn woman who suffered two accidents at the age of 17 and as a result became bind and partially paralyzed. Afterwards she displayed signs of supposed clairvoyance and split personality. She was also able to exist for long periods with little or no food. Witnesses testified to her being able to read books and letters clairvoyantly as well as identify lost objects. Over time Fancher became "possessed" or plagued by several different personalities with names such as Sunbeam Idol and Rosebud Shepard Encyc. of Occultism I p.323-24. Evidence of "bio-predation" some creature has gnawed along one edge of the leather cover -- about two inches. Small marginal worm hole text is not affected. Lacks front flyleaf. Better than it sounds. Binding is square and tight. Hinges/joints are perfectly sound. The full leather binding is contemporary "sprinkled" calf i.e. intentionally and in this case attractively speckled to achieve a marbled paper-like effect. First published in 1777 as THE CHAMPION OF VIRTUE the book has been frequently reprinted under the present title. Although early London printings are available in abundance early United States printings appear to be exceedingly scarce. A library bookplate is located on the inside front cover. Interior pages show scattered light marginal foxing staining and soiling. Several leaves are mildly creased in the upper corner. Both the title page and p. 29 display a small library impress stamp; a 2 cm tear neatly sealed is present on the upper edge of the title. Pages 3-5 contain three small marginal tears also neatly sealed. An accession number is stamped on the lower part of the first sectional half title. Between 1872 and 1903 Maisoneuve et Cie published 7 volumes in their "Bibliothèque Orientale" series. The first three volumes also contained the general title of "Chefs doeuvre littéraires de lIndie etc." The present volume volume II in the series is divided into 5 parts. The first four parts contain selections of ancient hymns and prayers translated into French by various scholars includes hymns from India Vedic and Buddhist Persia Avestan Egypt and Mesopotamia. The fifth section is the complete French translation by M.G. Pauthier of the "Shijing" Chi-King the "Classic of Poetry" a large collection of Chinese prayers hymns and odes which date from the 11th-7th centuries b.c.e. The same image is present in black and white on the title page. Head and tail caps are professionally repaired. The wraps show wear to the extremities as well as some age-toning soiling spotting mild edge chipping etc. The text block is loosely sewn with a single stitch through each gathering. Interior pages contain periodic spots of marginal foxing. A few minor marginal tears are neatly sealed. The upper edge of page 69 is chipped 1 x 0.5 cm. According to Crabtree this work is "a critical evaluation of the nature of hypnotism and somnambulism. The author sees imagination as the central element" Crabtree p. 276. Chapter XI discusses modern witchcraft "diatribe contre le livre préceédent de Charles Richet" Yve-Plessis. This is possibly the second edition. Apparently two editions of Fonvielles "Les endormeurs" were printed neither of which carried a date. The first edition appeared in 1887 and the second in 1907. Caillet and Crabtree list the printer of the 1887 edition as Henry du Parc. The Bibliotheque nationale however assigns the date 1887 to an edition printed by la Librairie illustrée.
