1894001084London: Privately Printed 1894. Hardcover. See Description. Tall 4to. 32.5 cm pp. 4 xvi 254 with 40 plates and a facsimile of the 1786 title page. Large paper copy #19 of 50 from a limited edition of 500.The preface states: "the present edition an exact reproduction of that of 1865 but correcting some manifest misprints is published in the interest of science and scholarship." Bound in later plain black cloth showing rubbing and wear to extremities and to the spine caps. The first few leaves including the title contain a small dark stain near the upper edge. Pages show periodic smudging/soiling; several plates have a damp stain on the outer edge of the margin; occasional edge tears are professionally sealed; 3-4 leaves are carefully tipped back in to place. Richard Payne Knight 1750-1824 was a classical scholar mythologist and a collector of antiquities. His "Discourse on the worship of Priapus" was first published in London 1786. Knight argues that a universal system of phallic worship and phallic symbolism existed across most ancient cultures. Comparisons are given between Greco-Roman mythology classical mystery religions Neo-Platonism Orphism Egyptian and Near Eastern mythology Indian religions etc. The work was considered scandalous in its day and it caused the author lasting difficulties. The plates depict examples of phallic imagery in ancient and medieval art i.e. in reliefs statuary coins monuments and architecture. SEE PHOTOS. 196pp. about 90 pages of ads and sample pages from other publications by Totten. including 10 page "The Our Race News-Leaflet" No. 1 October 1893. Original two-tone binding blue cloth spine and cream-colored sides decorated in red. No owner's name or bookplate. Professor Charles A. L. Totten was a professor of military science at Yale from 1889 to 1892 before leaving to pursue full time his interests in Biblical studies. In his 1890 book JOSHUA'S LONG DAY AND THE DIAL OF AHAZ he "proved" that 23 hours and 20 minutes were lost out of time when the sun stood still for Joshua and another 40 minutes disappeared when the sundial went backwards for Hezekiah essentially the same story NASA engineer Harold Hill turned into an urban legend in 1970 . Totten investigated and promoted a wide array of unusual beliefs such as the pyramid theories of Piazzi Smith spiritualism and Swedenborgianism. Although he did not invent the theory he was an enthusiastic proponent of Anglo-Israelism or British-Israelism the belief that the "lost" ten tribes of Israel became the modern Anglo-Saxon peoples of Britain Canada the U.S.A. and Northwestern Europe. This book appears to run along similar lines with lots of mathematical and calendar wizardry. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition. James Stanley Grimes was one of the most important American writers on animal magnetism. Grimes maintained that the effects of mind on matter and of mind upon mind occurred through a medium he called the 'etherium.' "The study of the way in which the etherium conveys impressions from one mind to another and the way in which these impressions are channeled through the physical organism he calls 'etherology.'" See Crabtree. Grimes' "Etherology" was first published in Boston and New York 1845. This second edition is revised and edited. Grimes' work inspired the American seer Andrew Jackson Davis to visit the spirit world through techniques of mesmerism. See Falk Doris V. With a dramatic woodcut frontispiece depicting the Anti-Christ as a seven headed dragon. Re-bound in quarter calf with marbled boards preserving the original calf spine. Title page shows age-toning soiling and staining; a small darker spot of staining is present near the upper corner. The inside margin of the frontispiece is carefully restored with some spots of loss to the inner black border-line of the illustration. End papers are stained; notations in an early hand are scrawled on the front free end paper. Interior pages contain light age toning scattered marginal foxing soiling and wear. A German mystic named Christian Armbruster penned this apocalyptic work first published in Germany in either 1813 or 1814. The author predicts the immanent end of days by comparing current events at that time i.e. the rise of the Emperor Napoleon to the prophecies in the Book of Revelation and in the Book of Daniel. Armbruster makes much use of dates and numerical mysticism. American editions of his book contain a frontispiece of a seven headed dragon and are falsely attributed to the more famous mystic Heinrich Jung-Stilling. The wraps show wear to the extremities as well as some age-toning soiling spotting mild edge chipping etc. The text block is loosely sewn with a single stitch through each gathering. Interior pages contain periodic spots of marginal foxing. A few minor marginal tears are neatly sealed. The upper edge of page 69 is chipped 1 x 0.5 cm. According to Crabtree this work is "a critical evaluation of the nature of hypnotism and somnambulism. The author sees imagination as the central element" Crabtree p. 276. Chapter XI discusses modern witchcraft "diatribe contre le livre préceédent de Charles Richet" Yve-Plessis. This is possibly the second edition. Apparently two editions of Fonvielles "Les endormeurs" were printed neither of which carried a date. The first edition appeared in 1887 and the second in 1907. Caillet and Crabtree list the printer of the 1887 edition as Henry du Parc. The Bibliotheque nationale however assigns the date 1887 to an edition printed by la Librairie illustrée.
