A name and date are penciled on the front free end paper. A few tiny spots of staining are present on p. 62. Interior pages are generally clean. A couple of tiny marginal tears pp. 5-8 are neatly sealed. Pages 97-98 contain two wood engraved illustrations "Jay J. Hartman spirit artist" with ghost and "test spirit photograph." Samuel Watson was an American Methodist minister and a believer in spiritualism. SEE PHOTOS. 196pp. about 90 pages of ads and sample pages from other publications by Totten. including 10 page "The Our Race News-Leaflet" No. 1 October 1893. Original two-tone binding blue cloth spine and cream-colored sides decorated in red. No owner's name or bookplate. Professor Charles A. L. Totten was a professor of military science at Yale from 1889 to 1892 before leaving to pursue full time his interests in Biblical studies. In his 1890 book JOSHUA'S LONG DAY AND THE DIAL OF AHAZ he "proved" that 23 hours and 20 minutes were lost out of time when the sun stood still for Joshua and another 40 minutes disappeared when the sundial went backwards for Hezekiah essentially the same story NASA engineer Harold Hill turned into an urban legend in 1970 . Totten investigated and promoted a wide array of unusual beliefs such as the pyramid theories of Piazzi Smith spiritualism and Swedenborgianism. Although he did not invent the theory he was an enthusiastic proponent of Anglo-Israelism or British-Israelism the belief that the "lost" ten tribes of Israel became the modern Anglo-Saxon peoples of Britain Canada the U.S.A. and Northwestern Europe. This book appears to run along similar lines with lots of mathematical and calendar wizardry. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition. Evidence of "bio-predation" some creature has gnawed along one edge of the leather cover -- about two inches. Small marginal worm hole text is not affected. Lacks front flyleaf. Better than it sounds. Binding is square and tight. Hinges/joints are perfectly sound. The full leather binding is contemporary "sprinkled" calf i.e. intentionally and in this case attractively speckled to achieve a marbled paper-like effect. First published in 1777 as THE CHAMPION OF VIRTUE the book has been frequently reprinted under the present title. Although early London printings are available in abundance early United States printings appear to be exceedingly scarce. Both the title page and p. 29 display a small library impress stamp; a 2 cm tear neatly sealed is present on the upper edge of the title. Pages 3-5 contain three small marginal tears also neatly sealed. An accession number is stamped on the lower part of the first sectional half title. Between 1872 and 1903 Maisoneuve et Cie published 7 volumes in their "Bibliothèque Orientale" series. The first three volumes also contained the general title of "Chefs doeuvre littéraires de lIndie etc." The present volume volume II in the series is divided into 5 parts. The first four parts contain selections of ancient hymns and prayers translated into French by various scholars includes hymns from India Vedic and Buddhist Persia Avestan Egypt and Mesopotamia. The fifth section is the complete French translation by M.G. Pauthier of the "Shijing" Chi-King the "Classic of Poetry" a large collection of Chinese prayers hymns and odes which date from the 11th-7th centuries b.c.e. Crabtree states that this is "A little known work of real significance for the history of both animal magnetism and of physical research.
