Robert Sibbald 1641-1722 was born in Fife and qualified as a physician after study in Leiden and Paris. He was appointed as the first Professor of Medicine at Edinburgh University and became Geographer Royal in 1682. He had a particular interest in creating frameworks for proper study - the proper institutions and evidence base. This work 'The Illustrated Essay of the Natural History of Scotland' is a systematic review of the natural resources of Scotland - from the weather to geography geology plant and animal life - including disease and local cures. This copy has a sound but worn rebacked cloth binding with gilt titles and date to spine. There is an ink signature of I Strachan to the fep which is not original and some ink letters and numbers to the initial blank which is. Contents with title page; dedication 2pp; contents framework 1p; approvals; and text laid out in 3 main sections with separate title pages and pagination; followed by an Appendix; further text and errata and the plates bound at the rear. 1652032849London: John Wright 1652 A good copy of the 'Third Impression much Augmented' in full leather binding with new spine with raised bands and title label and contemporary boards. Blith 1604-1654 was known as a writer on husbandry. He was a supporter of Cromwell as the decorative title page with the motto 'Vive La Re Publick.' demonstrates. The book sets out and promotes improvements in husbandry and was suppressed after the Restoration in 1660. The binding is sound and clean. There is a lot of wear and leather loss at the corners. The marbled endpapers look to have had repair and are probably predate the binding work. The contents have toning and there has been some close trimming to margins notable in the epistles section at the beginning where page titles are missing but there is no loss to text. There is the signature of Philip Styles to the initial blank and a signature of Tho Wilkins 1683 to the recto of the decorative title - possibly although could be another Wilkins repeated at the side of the title page. Contents: decorative title; letterpress title blank verso; dedication 12pp; Various epistles 30pp; Poems 3 pp; errata 1p; text pp 1-262 with one diagram in the text 2 folding and 2 single plates; finis with signature of Tho W; appendix 8pp; table 10pp; finis. Hinges and spine caps restored; careful repair to corner tips of front cover. All edges gilt. Pages contain minor scattered foxing and age toning. Inscription written in an old hand on verso of front blank. First printed edition of the "Excerpta Peiresciana" manuscript or "De Virtutuibus et Vitiis" part of a large Byzantine anthology of excerpts which were gathered from earlier Greek historical works and compiled under the direction of the emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus 905-959 c.e. The collection was arranged in 53 sections 4 of which are extant - 1. "De Legationibus" 2. "De Virtutibus et Vitiis" 3. "De Sententiis" 4. "De Insidiis." In 1582 Fulvius Ursini published "De Legationibus." Additions were later published by Hoeschel 1603. See Sandy's p.397. In 1634 Henri de Valesius Valois1603-1676 a respected Greek scholar and translator published "De Virtutibus et Vitiis" here listed from a Cyprus manuscript in the possession of M. Peiresc Excerpta Peiresciana. The excerpts include selections from Polybius Diodorus Siculus Nicolas Damascene Dionysius Halicarnassus Appianus and John of Antioch. Printed in double columns. <br/><br/><em>This is the first edition containing all 30 books. The first 20 books were published in Spanish in 1601. Marianas's importent history of Spain deals with the country from the first settlements to the death of King Ferdinand who united the Crowns of Castile and Aragon."Among his Maraina's literary labours the most important is undoubtedly his great work on the history of Spain which is still remembered today. There was published as late as 1854 in Madrid an improved and richly illustrated edition continued up to that year. The work first appeared as "Historiæ de rebus Hispaniæ libri XX. Toleti typis P. Roderici 1592". A later edition of the compiler himself carried on still further is "De rebus Hispaniæ libri XXX" published at Mainz in 160 the item offered. This edition bears the imprimatur of the order for the thirty books given by Stephan Hojeda visitor from Dec. 1598 and of the provincial from 1604. The author had in the mean time converted a Latin edition into Spanish and this appeared complete containing the thirty books of the Latin edition at Toledo in 1601. 1627032988London: Adam Islip 1627 A fair copy of the extremely scarce '2nd impression' of Edward Grimeston's Generall Historie of the Netherlands. Grimeston was known as prolific translator and the first edition of the Historie was largely taken from J F Le Petit's 'La Grand Chronique Ancienne et Moderne de Hollande'. It was a fairly faithful translation but he researched the subject adding text on the years 1601-1608 using sources such as Emanuel Demetrius. It was very popular but he was criticised for not including more on the efforts and achievements of the English troops in Flanders. In his address at the beginning of the 2nd 1627 edition he states that he did in 1608 'observe my Authors.They were men borne in those countries who would arrogate as much as might be to their own Nation'. In the new edition he 'had conference with some of the great Commanders and Captaines' from the English side and endeavoured to redress the balance. He wanted to also bring the edition up to date but apparently his printers did not allow it so this work was done by William Crosse. The second edition has fewer engravings 29 and the pagination has numerous errors presumably testament to all the revisions and additions. This copy is contemporary full leather which was rebacked at some point to preserve some of the spine. The repair was not particularly high quality and there is some old tape at the internal spine joints. The boards themselves are generally clean with some scuffing. There is a lot of repair to corners now flaking and the bottom corner of the back board is soft. The spine remnants are quite dry and flaky. Internally there is an old note at the front endpaper repeated on the initial blank which also has an elaborate signature of William Forde of Manchester 1800. The note states that the book is rare and that he has found an entry in White's Catalogue for it in 1801 at a cost of 18/-. Contents with engraved title - with signatures to top; dedication 2pp; Translator's preface 2pp; text pp 1-1262 with continuation by Crosse pp 1276-1588 with 29 three quarter page engravings Finis; Index 13pp Finis. The pagination is all over the place eg pp 1262 - blank - 1276 where the Continuation starts. Please enquire if you would like to see the full list. All the ties work bar one - 1266-1249 - but this is because the tie is wrong - the text is fine. The contents are generally clean with occasional marking and the odd edge tear and are complete. Elaborate head and tailpieces and initial capitals. The paper is lightly toned and quite light in weight. The initial leaves through to p 1 are very fragile with some loss at the edges. There is light persistent staining at the top margin which is not particularly noticeable until the end of the work where the stain is at the top corner which becomes quite fragile. There is sporadic slight worming in the bottom corner - and occasional exploits elsewhere - but away from the text. 1672032862London: Matthew Walbancke. Matthew Walbancke and Henry Twyford 1672 A very good copy in largely contemporary binding. In two parts with separate title pages dated 1647 and 1651 respectively. It is suggested that John Selden 1584-1654 is the true author of the work which was then edited by Nathaniel Bacon - whose name is on the title to the Continuation. However this is still a matter of argument. The work was produced originally as the Civil War came to its close and the Commonwealth was established and is written against the royal prerogative. A 'secret' or 'private' edition was produced in 1672 after the restoration of the monarchy. It is stated that 750 copies were produced and many were burnt or otherwise destroyed. The edition has the 2 works in one is dated as for the 1647/51 edition and there are variants of it. Detailed study Joseph A Dane University of Chicago Press suggests that the remnants of 1672 copies were put back together and sections reprinted later. This copy is clearly a 1672 'secret' edition of which parts are likely to be later printings. According to ESTC this copy has the Title page in setting A; Quires B-C are in setting 2; and Quire D in setting b. The binding is full calf with contemporary boards with blind ruled lines and new matching spine with raised bands and title label. Endpapers have been retained with repair and there are some ink numerals to the front and a latin quotation with initials to the verso of the fep. For a time his patron was Cardinal Giulio de' Medici and he mocked Popes and would be popes but in time he settled in Venice - the Anti-Rome. Ariosto called him "the scourge of Princes". He is remembered most for his satires and his letters which detail conversations with both the great names of the day as well as regular folk both women and men. His ability to manipulate the reader of his letters - which were carefully chosen and probably always meant for publication - by constructing a compelling narrative with himself as central protagonist - changed epistolary collections forever. 1658032751Roterdam: Arnould Leers 1658 A fair to good copy of the scarce 1st edition in largely contemporary full leather binding with portrait of Jaques Amprovx 11 full page plates and 33 engravings in the text. The engraved title and 2 leaves of the table of chapters are provided in facsimile. Attributed to Charles de Rochefort the Pastor of the French Protestant Church in Rotterdam - although there has been considerable dispute over the authorship. The vocabulary is by Father Raymond Breton. This copy has been rebacked and restitched retaining the original contemporary boards with corners rebuilt. A new matching spine with raised bands and title label has been added. The original pastedown endpapers have been retained with a large armorial bookplate to the front pastedown and some old ink notes to the rear pastedown. New free endpapers have been added. Contents: engraved title facsimile; title with printer's device and old ink scrawl to verso; portrait of Messire Jaques Amprovx; epistre 4pp; preface 6pp; avertissement 2 pp; text book I pp 1-262 with 33 engravings in the text and 11 full page engravings; half title book II; text pp 265-514; Vocabulaire Caribe pp 515-527 fin. There is a pale semi-circular stain at the bottom margin in the gutter which commences at p 209 and continues through the work. There are small very occasional circular burn spots of which one has produced a hole at p 363. There has been occasional worming - initially in the gutter circa p 37 one small track - this has been repaired from p 49-119 and then disappears; and one small track in the top corner tip from p 393-419 - again repaired to p 410 to preserve the integrity of the corner. A small piece of text has transfered to the illustration in the text on p 197 2 words are affected on p 196. There are old ink notes in the side margins at pp 266 464 and 484. One or two instances of minor marginal worming edge tear to N3 no text affected. A couple of the plates with edge tears but generally clean. A nice copy. <br /> <br /> A cornerstone work of Ethiopian studies Hiob Ludolf's 1624-1704 Historia Aethiopica offered the first systematic European account of Abyssinia drawing on Jesuit sources and direct collaboration with the Ethiopian scholar Abba Gorgoryos 1595-1658. The 4 sections cover nature the land the peoples and culture government and succession of kings religion and the progress of the Christian church there literature economy and other topics. Manuscript in Italian on the History of Germany and virtually all of Europe in the momentous era of the 1620's prepared for Pope Urban VIII Maffeo Barberini by the Papal Nuncio to the Holy Roman Emperor. Written in a graceful Italian hand. Folio. 340 mm. Text generally clean but with scattered mold stains. Remains of old vellum binding. Interesting colorful paste paper end sheets. With the bookplate of Elkin Mathews = Charles Elkin Mathews 1851-1921 London publisher bookseller and collector who played an important role in the literary life the English speaking world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also with a circular Sneyd family book plate probably Ralph Sneyd 1793-1870 but perhaps earlier. This work is often attributed to Carlo Carafa an incompetent and criminal administrator who was executed for treason at Castel San Angelo on Mar 4 1561 by Pius IV. but it is certainly by a later Carlo Carafa born in Naples in 1611 who was bishop of Aversa and Papal Nuncio to Switzerland the Republic of Venice and to the Holy Roman Emperor. The Holy Roman Emperor at this time was Ferdinand II 1578-1637 a member of the House of Habsburg. He was also King of Bohemia and King of Hungary. His rule coincided with the Thirty Years' War. Ferdinand's aim as a zealous Catholic was to restore Catholicism as the only religion in the Empire and suppress Protestantism. The Neapolitan Carafa family produced a large number of bishops cardinals and some saints. Cardinals in the Carafa family include with dates of their elevation to Cardinal: Filippo Carafa 1378; Oliviero Carafa 1467; Gianvincenzo Carafa 1527; Carlo Carafa 1555; Diomede Carafa 1555; Alfonso Carafa 1557; Antonio Carafa 1568; Decio Carafa 1611; Pier Luigi Carafa seniore 1645; Carlo Carafa della Spina 1664; Fortunato Ilario Carafa della Spina 1686; Carafa di Belvedere 1764-1830; Francesco Carafa della Spina 1773; and Domenico Carafa della Spina 1844. There are five leaves missing from the 'Troisième Partie' F4 F5 G1 G4 and G5: pages 85-90 95-96 and 101-104. Nineteenth century half calf and marbled boards now lacking the leather corner-pieces revealing earlier full vellum boards underneath; covers a little worn; light tidemark to the bottom inner corner of the text block throughout; a little worming to the top blank margin of the first 25 leaves; insect damage to the bottom edge extending at most a few millimetres into the wide blank bottom margins; first title leaf dusty and a little soiled; the five missing leaves notwithstanding overall a very presentable copy. The second edition of Claude Mydorge's expanded edition and critique of this popular early work of recreational mathematics first published in 1624 and usually attributed to Jean Leurechon. Each of Leurechon's mathematical problems is reprinted here in roman type with Mydorge's explanatory notes and criticism following in italic. The third part albeit relatively insubstantial only 44 well-illustrated pages is devoted exclusively to fireworks and their construction which probably explains the few missing leaves. The subtitle is: 'Composée d'un receuil de plusieurs plaisantes & recreatives inventions de feux d'artifice plus la maniere de faire toutes sortes de fuzées tant simples que doubles avec leur composition le tout representé par figures sic' Comprising a collection of several pleasant and recreative inventions of fireworks plus the manner of making all sorts of rockets both single and double with their composition all represented in figures. This third part together with the second made its first appearance in a 1628 edition of 'Récréations Mathématiques' published by Charles Osmont at Rouen. 'Mydorge's first major work was the "Examen du livre des Récréations mathématiques" published in 1630. As the title suggests it was a work on recreational mathematics and was effectively a critique of Laurechon's sic book on the theme 'Récréations mathématiques' by the French Jesuit Jean Leurechon writing under the pen name of van Etten first appeared in 1624. 1688032625Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang 1688 A fair copy of the first French edition of Richard Blome's guide to British interests in North America with 6 of 7 folding maps. The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular however some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. The boards are reasonably sound with some leather loss at corners and a small area on the front board. The endpapers are marbled. Contents: 2 blank; title; avertissement 2pp; Text 1-331 pp Fin; index table; 2 final blanks. The maps are: Carte de la Jamaique; Ile des Barbades; Les Barmudes; Nouvelle Carte de la Caroline; Nouvelle Angleterre et Nouvel York; and Partie de L'Amerique. Contents are generally clean with the odd spot or mark. There is a repaired fold tear to Nouvelle Angleterre and a small tear at the base of p95. There are some light ink marks on p 299. Gilt vertical rule to both boards gilt ornaments and rules to spine gilt lettering in red title blocks on spine date stamped in gilt at heel of spine. Interior shows mild age toning a few shallow edge chips and some light soil to title page. Prior owner name penned at top margin of title page dated 1869. Controversial work by Anglican Bishop of Ossory Griffith Williams in which he identifies the Westminster Assembly of Divines as the "mystical soul" and the Long Parliament as the "visible body" of the Great Antichrist based on Biblical prophecy and what he sees as their combined role in the slaying of the "first two Witnesses of God"--King Charles I of England and William Laud Archbishop of Canterbury. <br /> <br /> Williams was unable to find a printer willing to print his book until the Restoration of 1660. This copy was printed the next year. Main title in red and black each sermon also is prefaced by a separate title in some cases also a dedication or other additional leaves. Also contains three additional sermons not listed on the title-page including one in St Margaret's Westminster on June 28 1660 the day of Thanksgivings for the Return of Charles II. Full leather binding. Covers are rubbed bumped and worn and the front cover is detached the spine is almost entirely missing and whar remains is darkened curled and hardened. Internal binding has significant separation in Sermon XII but is just holding here elsewhere internal binding is sound. The front end-paper darkened torn and curled has name and date 1766 and note referring to last sermon also name date and note of 1707. Title page and pages are a little darkened but are otherwise clean except the last sermon which has significant underlining presumable by the 1766 owner. Sermons contained are: I. Woodcut ornament on title-page woodcut headpiece and initial. 14 pp. Extremely rare second edition of a pamphlet containing an army report on the preparations for a siege of Breda by the army of the Dutch Republic under the Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik. The army had left Nijmegen to march on Breda which was in the hands of the Spaniards since the conquest of the city by the Spanish general Spinola in June 1625. The hidden motive of these preparations was to distract the Spanish army that was threatening the city of Maastricht some 150 kilometres southeast of Breda. In 1637 however Frederik Hendrik captured Breda after a seven weeks siege. The city remained part of the Dutch Republic from that time. One joint with five small wormholes a few hardly noticeable shallow scratches to covers a hint of wear to extremities but THE LOVELY BINDINGS IN FINE CONDITION with lustrous leather and gilt with only minor wear and with their very considerable original visual appeal entirely intact.<br/> <br/> This history of "England's Revolutions" begins with the invasion of the Saxons and covers the struggles for the throne of England through the Plantagenets Tudors and Stuarts up to the Restoration and the reign of James II. The learned Jesuit historian Pierre Joseph d'Orléans 1641-98 was described by Voltaire as the first historian to specialize in revolutions--he was also the author of a history of revolutions in Spain an account of the Tartar conquerors of China and a subsequent study of the English Civil War covering the years 1603-90 in depth. The present work was favorably received on both sides of the Channel: the Earl of Chatham commended it in his letters and du Fresnoy described it as a "history written with eloquence and judgment" and praised its equal treatment of Catholics and Protestants. When the present set appeared in a George Bayntun catalogue the bindings were described as "very handsome" and "almost identical to the set of Bertrand De Moleville's 'Histoire de la Révolution de France' 1801-1803 bound by Bozerian" and also from the library of Baron de Mackau 1832-1918 a member of the Chamber of Deputies for 42 years and a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. The volumes are unusual in their combination of calf boards with contrasting morocco spines and their gilt decoration is particularly lovely. François Bozerian generally called "Bozerian le jeune" was active in Paris from the turn of the 19th century until 1818 and for much of that time he worked with his elder brother Jean-Claude. The Bozerian binderies produced many fine books praised today especially for their technical achievement and elegance of design. The first edition of this work is surprisingly rare in the marketplace: RBH and ABPC record only one other copy at auction since at least 1975. Chez Claude Barbin unknown

First published in French the prior year which was published without the plates.<br /><br />François Pidou de Saint Olon was a French diplomat under Louis XIV. In 1682 he was nominated as the first French resident envoy to the Republic of Genoa following the Bombardment of Genoa. He was then sent as an envoy to Madrid. In 1689 François Pidou was appointed ambassador to the court of Sultan Moulay Ismail for the signing of a commercial treaty and to release prisoners now slaves of Barbary corsairs of Salé for 233 including 29 bedridden Moroccan prisoners held by the French. His mission was not successful however he continued to stay more than three weeks more in Morocco. The book gains particular interest through its author's position as ambassador giving him access not always voluntary to areas of Moroccan society previously unrecorded by travelers. There are detailed descriptions of Moroccan dress and the book is beautifully illustrated with eight engraved plates of Moroccan men and women in traditional costume.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />With the fine copper engraved frontispiece of the overall state of Morocco which is quite rare and is often found missing in most copies.
