1580032567Antverpiae Antwerp: Ex officina Christophori Plantini Architypographi Regii 1580 An extremely scarce original copy in soft cover vellum binding printed and published by Christopher Plantin and with his printer's device on the title page. This work is a contemporary account of events in the Netherlands during the period of armed rebellion against the rule of Philip II of Spain and its subsequent repression. The activities of Mathias Holy Roman Emperor who was invited to be Governor of the Netherlands in 1577 in promoting a Catholic revival have been said to be contributory to the Thirty Years War. The work was edited by Aggaeus Van Albada an extremely able who was principal speaker for the Netherlands at the peace talks that followed the rebellion. Christopher Plantin whose major printing house was in Antwerp suffered personally in the conflict - only saving his business from destruction by paying ransoms to the Spanish soldiers. This copy is in a full vellum soft binding. The boards appear contemporary with the remains of ties at the back. The spine is newer and possibly applied with glue - the book is quite tight to open particularly at the beginning. The binding is a little grubby but sound. Newer blanks have been added at the beginning and end and are a little dog-eared. Contents: title page with printer's device and a couple of ink letters; summa privilegii 1p; text with decorative initial capitals pp 1-338; ad lectorum 339-340; quotation 1p; printer's note 1p; blank; typographus lectori with superscriptio pp 345-351. Given the age of this book the contents are in good clean condition. There is a light stain in the bottom margin that extends upwards into the text which is persistent throughout but which worsens at the end of the book. Pages are lightly toned. A very small piece of the paper surface from a marginal note has detached at p328 and been deposited on p329 but the original text is still visible. Condition good the binding is in new fine condition internally the end-papers are frayed at bottom with loss fraying with loss of paper but not text to lower and lower outer right margin of title light water mark to top edge of first 100 pages. Old minor worm track to lower margin of about 40 pages. Other than this the pages are pretty clean slightly toned and dust marked no foxing the texts still crisp and sharp. Nicholas Sanders c.1530-1581 Roman Catholic agent and historian ordained c.1550 exiled in Augsburg in 1566. This work by Sanders "De visibili Monarchia Ecclesiae" first published in 1571 contains the first narrative of the sufferings of the English Roman Catholics. Its extreme Papalism and its strenuous defence of Pius V.'s bull excommunicating and deposing Elizabeth marked out Sanders for the enmity of the English government and he retaliated with lifelong efforts to procure the deposition of Elizabeth and the restoration of Roman Catholicism. His expectations of the cardinalate were disappointed by Pius V.'s death in 1572 and Sanders spent the next few years at Madrid trying to embroil Philip II. who gave him a pension of 300 ducats in open war with Elizabeth." The state of Christendom" he wrote "dependeth upon the stout assailing of England." His writings have been the basis of all Roman Catholic histories of the English Reformation. In this work he is deeply critical of Henry VIII even suggesting that Anne Boleyn was actually Henry VIII's own daughter. The engravings which mostly depict different forms of crucifixion are ascribed to the Dutch engraver Peter van der Borcht. Justus Lipsius 1547-1606 was a Belgian antiquarian who specialized in the study of ancient and classical history. His work "De cruce libri tres" first printed in 1583 is an important scholarly study on crucifixion in antiquity. Jean Picards "De Prisca Celtopaedia" discusses the development of language arts and science in ancient Gaul. The author uses place names ancient sources and epigraphic evidence to argue that the Greek language had originated in Gaul and that the Gallic Druids and Bards were developing philosophy science and poetry long before other cultures. Picard claims that the Greek language was first brought to Greece by the Gauls as they travelled through those lands on the way to found new settlements in Asia Minor i.e. Galatia paraphrased from Le Long Bib. Binding good and strong with some general wear and rubbing leather chipped to the head/tail of the spine and rubbed through to the boards to the bottom edges partially to the front fore-edge and the corners joints with partial cracks at the head/tail but the binding remains firm and the boards strongly attached. Contents generally very good clean and complete with a few small faults: the title page to vol. I a little worn and marked with the lower corner tip missing but not affecting any lettering a few pages very lightly stained; pp. 18-32 with a tear/chip at the base of the gutter with slight loss of a few letters; but lost letters replaced in contemporary autograph this may have been a binding fault as these pages are not quite straight with a few marginal notes slightly shaved. Generally margins are very good with marginal notes present slight worming to the head of pages 590-620 slightly affecting running title only top corners/top foreedge of pages 113-116 singed slightly affecting a couple of marginal notes. 1598955341598. 1598. Fair. - An original holograph document attractively penned in an unknown hand on 13-1/4 inch high by 15-5/8 inch wide cream paper. Fifteen lines boldly penned with several flourishes signed "Christophorus Popel Barro a Lobcowicz" by Christoph Popel Baron of Lobkowicz who was Chief Steward of Bohemia under the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The document is further annotated with 8 lines penned across the center of the verso with an unidentified signature and another 8 lines penned vertically on the verso above the center panel also with an unidentified signature. The faint remnants and outline of a red wax seal are centered at the top and bottom edges of the verso. Folded twice vertically and four times horizontally with several tears along the folds. There is some foxing present especially at the top and bottom. Good. <p>The Chief Steward of Bohemia under Emperor Rudolf II Christoph Popel Baron of Lobkowicz 1549-1609 was a close friend of the celebrated court painter Hans von Aachen. Lobkowicz who was known for his language and diplomatic skills was tasked with welcoming visitors from within and without the Holy Roman Empire to the Emperor's Court and for negotiating alliances in the war against the Turks. Lobkowicz was responsible for the peace negotiations with the Polish King Sigismund. Lobkowicz spent considerable sums on art work for his residence and commissioned jewelry precious watches and valuable objects. He was buried in the chapel in the Prague Cathedral. [1598]. unknown
156298780Milan 1562. 1562. - Folio 12 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide. 1-page on bifolium with a red paper seal. On the 4th leaf with the seal the letter is addressed "APRmo 5 Mons : Vescovo di Cremona". The letter realized in a secretarial hand is dated April 5 1562 from Milan and is boldly signed by Francesco Fernando dÁvalos d'Aquino d'Aragona.<p>Philip II King of Spain and Duke of Milan chose Francesco Fernando dÁvalos to be his envoy at the Council of Trent. He arrived in Trent on March 14 1562 and attended the sessions of the council. He pressed the Spaniards to not offer up anything against the interests of the Holy See. Upon his return to Milan he charged his secretary Ercole Pagnano with the task of generating a report. As the Governor's agent Pagnano had defended the privileges of the Sicilian monarchy and worked with the Spaniards to quell the controversy regarding the jurisdiction of bishops. In this letter to the Bishop of Cremona the Governor is offering Pagnano's report to him. Loosely translated he states that Pagnano is well informed about these things and that "V.S." Your Excellency should be given his account.<p>The letter was once folded into 4 panels and there very minor breaks along 3 of the folds. There is some minor browning especially to one of the folds. <p>An advisor to King Philip II of Spain Francesco Fernando dÁvalos c.1530-1571 took command of the Spanish army in Lombardy and Piedmont succeeding the 3rd Duke of Alba who had become the Governor of Milan. From 1560 to 1563 Francesco Fernando served as the Governor of the Duchy of Milan. He was the viceroy of Sicily from 1568 to 1571.<p>The Bishop of Cremona was born Niccolo Sfondrati in 1535 in the Duchy of Milan. Philip II of Spain appointed him to be a senator in Milan in 1552 and at the urging of the Spanish government the Pope appointed him Bishop of Cremona in 1560. He participated in some of the sessions of the Council of Trent from 1561 to 1563. In 1590 he was one of seven cardinals that were acceptable to be pope by Philip II of Spain. He was elected Pope and took the name Gregory XIV. He died less than a year later in October 1591. Milan, 1562. unknown

Additions were pieced together and tacked onto the end of his work extending it to 1515. Monstrelet who was present when Joan of Arc was interrogated by Philip the Good includes a great deal of primary source material that otherwise would have been lost to history. The colophon verso of final leaf reads "Sebastianus Gryphius excudebat Lugduni anno M.D.LII." and contains a large woodcut griffin device. Dual column text with fine decorative initials. Several diagrams are included with the text illustrating Bound in full period vellum rubbed. Title and shelf number are written on the spine in an early hand. An old ownership or institutional stamp is present on the title page the second leaf leaf T5 and also on the colophon page. Interior pages contain mild to moderate age-toning and periodic scattered foxing and spotting. Some pages are more uniformly toned. Raffaelo Maffei 1451-1522 was an Italian humanist historian and theologian. His "Commentariorum urbanorum" first published in 1506 is an encyclopedia of all subjects known at the time. The work is particularly notable for the importance given to geography and to biography. Maffei writes extensively on the discoveries of the Spanish and the Portuguese explorers including Christopher Columbus and the discovery of the New World in this edition mentioned in column 368. The encyclopedia is divided into three parts: Part I. Geographica in 11 books; Part II. Anthropologia biography in 11 books including lives of illustrious men popes and emperors; Part III. Philologia in 15 books which discusses natural science animals plants metals gems stones grammar and rhetoric mathematics geometry optics astronomy astrology Aristotelian thought etc. See Catholic Encyc. and EB11. Text is printed in Italic type with decorative woodcut initials and head and tail pieces. Bound in modern quarter leather over 19th century marbled boards. Remnants of an early spine label are preserved. End papers are renewed in quality laid paper. Interior pages are generally clean but show occasional light toning wear and scattered spotting/staining. The title page contains mild discoloration; the inner margin is neatly strengthened hardly noticeable; M. Maturins name is written in a miniscule hand on the upper margin. The map reveals mild spots of discoloration; a small chip and a neatly sealed tear 1 cm are present on the outer margin; another sealed tear 2.5 cm on the lower edge is accompanied by a couple tiny worm holes slightly affecting the printed border area. Giovanni Tommaso Minadoi 1545-1618 served as personal physician to Teodoro Balbi the Venetian consul in Syria. While in Aleppo Minadoi witnessed the outbreak of the Ottoman-Safavid War 1578-90 fought between the Turkish Sultan Murad III and the Persian Shah Mohammad Hodabanda the Blind. Above the plate a much faded note in pencil concerning G. Minadoi is attributed by another penciled note to Major Joseph Delafield Maturins father. Leaf Ee3 is mis-signed as F3 but all leaves are present and in order. The title page contains a woodcut vignette/device. Each chapter begins with a woodcut decorative head piece and an initial. Bound in full dark brown modern calf with blind tooled borders and stamps after an early period style. The upper part of the title page is age-toned / tanned; a professionally sealed 7 cm. tear runs from the gutter part way across the upper portion of the title and is difficult to detect on first sight; a couple of tiny chips on the top edge are restored. Interior pages are generally attractive but with occasional mild age-toning and periodic faint marginal damp staining. A small repair patch is present on the inner margins of leaves A6 and V6. A tear on leaf V6 also carefully sealed extends vertically about 8.5 cm from the lower gutter and part way into the text but causing almost no obscuration. Printed by Thomas Creede who is best known for issuing dramatic works including some of Shakespeares plays. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is a translation of "Recueil des choses mémorables avenues en France sous le règne de Henri II François II Charles IX Henri III et Henri IV." This work is generally attributed to either Simon Goulart or Jean de Serres and was first printed in French no place or publisher in 1595 and again in 1598 expanded to include the reign of Henri IV up to the year 1597. See Brunet IV 1161-1162. The second part with new pagination provides translated selections from Pierre Matthieus 4 part "Histoire des derniers troubles de France" first published in Lyons 1594-95. A section at the end is titled "a brief recitall of the most memorable things which came to passé in Fraunce under the raigne of Henry the fourth until the middle of the Yeare 1598" which if written by Matthieu may possibly represent the first printing of some amendments which Matthieu later added to the second edition of his "Histoire" printed in 1600. This collection provides interesting testaments to the wars of religion in France during the 16th century. 1600032381Paris: Marc Orry 1600 A good copy of the 2nd French edition of Joseph Acosta's important work on the New World first published in Spanish in 1590. Acosta was a Jesuit who spent 17 years in South America and Mexico. His work based on careful observation formed one of the first accounts of the New World. This copy is in probably contemporary full vellum binding with yapp edges. The original ties have gone. It is difficult to say if the binding was hard or soft cover because at some point in its history it has had an old stiff embossed wallpaper with gilt birds and flowers used to form new endpapers. There are no pages before the title page which has had a strip added at the bottom and which is coming loose. Contents: title page; dedication pp ii-iv; advert; poems 4pp; Extrait du Privilege du Roi 1p; Text in 7 books pp 1-375; table of contents 34 pp. The text pages are numbered on the recto only. With decorative head pieces and initial capitals. The text is very clean with just the occasional mark and some light underlining at p 238 but p 58 is missing. P 31 is mispaginated as p 13; p 267 is un-numbered and p 97 is very thin with a hole in the bottom margin. 1587033313<p>London : Holinshed Harrison Jooker et al 1587 A good copy of the Scottish part of Holinshed's Chronicles. First published in 1577 this work was revised and reissued after censorship in 1587. This is the 1587 reissue - said to have been used by Shakespeare in writing Macbeth. This copy is in a recent full calf binding with a panelled design to the boards with gilt titles and date. It has minimal wear. New endpapers and intial and final blanks have been added. Contains: decorative title page dated 1585 with some professioanl repair to the side edge; dedication pp 3-4; Contents list p5; authorship p6; The description of Scotland pp7-23 blank verso; title page - The Historie of Scotland dated 1585; dedication p 27-28; The Historie of Scotland pp 29-464; first table alphabeticall 12 pp; second table alphabeticall 15pp; finis. These two index sections do not cover Scotland - the third and fourth tables are missing together with the Colophon. There are 2 problems with the collation. The leaf with 325/6 is missing and has been replaced with a blank sheet. A fascimile of this leaf is loose in the book. There is considerable mispagination with pp 430-439 - part of the havoc created by censorship of the work at the time. The pagination is: 430-436 tie works 437-432 tie does not work - pp 438/431 should be after 437 and are missing but supplied loose in facsimile - 433-439 tie works. Overall the contents are in very good clean condition with the occasional small stain or mark ink drink at 98/9. However pp 419-424 are in much more fragile condition suggesting that they were added in from another volume. There is a large ink splatter affecting the gutter and some of the text in the lower part on pp 419-424 although all the text is readable. Side edges are browned and fragile in this section and there are some paper repairs on pp 421/2. There is a small burn hole in the text at pp 389/90 and tiny burn holes in the gutter of pp 401/2.
