Hardcover bound in green publisher's cloth with spine titles in gilt and cover designs in blind. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Early signatures on the front endpapers and rear flyleaf by "Donald Graham". The text is a little toned but is clean. Jean-Joseph-Gustave Cler 1814-1859 was a French General and member of the Zouaves. He served in the light infantry in North Africa in the 1840s and was part of a force of 1200 soldiers sent to the Crimean War in the 1850s here he was promoted to brigadier general and commanded the 62nd and 73 Infantry Regiments. It was here that he earned his Legion of Honour and in 1856 he led the 1st Infantry Brigade. He as killed at the Battle of Magenta during the Second Italian War for Independence. <br/> <br/> D. Complete in two 2 volumes uniformly bound in brown 3/4 cloth marbled paper covered boards ruled borders and lettered in gilt on spine panels top text block edge in gilt deckled edges. We have never encountered this binding variant on this title and suspect that the set has been rebound using the original boards or that it may be custom though there are no binder's tags present. In any case a professional job with lovely results. Light rubbing along those portions of the edges not wrapped in cloth otherwise presenting virtually as issued with fully intact hinges firm bindings clean and unmarked interiors. Solid Near Fine bordering on Fine. xii402 viii412 pp. illus. w/ numerous b&w plates with captioned guards color folding "Railway Map of England and Wales" at rear of Vol. II. Copyrighted 1899 both volumes showing 1900 date on lower main title thus an early 2nd printing. A handsome gift-quality set. Henry T. Coates and Co. Hardcover

The title page & last text page are chipped around the edges & bumped and there is a piece out of the bottom inner corner of the last page. 44 pages. 11 black-and-white engraved portraits with tissue guards. The page corners are lightly bumped and the edges of a few front & rear pages are chipped. Good. <p>The English Revolution also known as The Glorious Revolution or the Revolution of 1688 was the deposing of the Catholic King James II and VII of England Scotland and Ireland by his daughter Mary and the subsequent accession to the throne of Mary and her Dutch husband William III of Orange. James had remained childless for eleven years and the birth of his son in 1688 precipitated the revolution creating as it did the prospect of a Catholic dynasty rather than the succession of his Protestant daughter Mary. De Peyster quotes praise of William of Orange as the man who "rescued the Protestant religion in Europe and saved the Church of England here." In this pamphlet de Peyster writes about a group of of men and women who exerted powerful influence over the development of events during the revolution. Some kind of veneer has been applied to the spines & there are pieces out of the leather & out of the labels affecting the titling. The front cover of Vol. 1 is detached. xxxviii & 434 pages; iv & 398 pages; xii & 399 pages; viii & 469 pages; with a 16-page publisher's catalog in each volume. Illustrated with 45 engraved plates including a portrait frontispiece in each volume & a folding genealogical table. There is an owner's bookplate displaying a coat of arms on each front pastedown with a later owner's ink address stamp & printed address label on the preliminary blanks of each volume.
