Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker 1675 Utrecht 1680 and Leiden 1698. EB11. His Aegyptiaca first printed in 1683 compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. He argues against the theory put forth by Sir John Marsham and by John Spencer that Jewish traditions were derived from Egyptian practices. This second edition has been expanded from the first. Bound in modern marbled paper over boards with leather spine with five raised bands. Gilt vertical rule to both boards gilt ornaments and rules to spine gilt lettering in red title blocks on spine date stamped in gilt at heel of spine. Interior shows mild age toning a few shallow edge chips and some light soil to title page. Prior owner name penned at top margin of title page dated 1869. Controversial work by Anglican Bishop of Ossory Griffith Williams in which he identifies the Westminster Assembly of Divines as the "mystical soul" and the Long Parliament as the "visible body" of the Great Antichrist based on Biblical prophecy and what he sees as their combined role in the slaying of the "first two Witnesses of God"--King Charles I of England and William Laud Archbishop of Canterbury. <br /> <br /> Williams was unable to find a printer willing to print his book until the Restoration of 1660. This copy was printed the next year. Boards are plain. It is in near fine clean condition. Newer endpapers have been added. Signature of John Knight made twice more on verso of frontispiece. Contents are in very good clean condition with decorative headpieces. With frontispiece; title; contents list 4pp; list of publications 4 pp; text pp 1-396. A number of the individual pieces have their own title page and all are dated 1675. There is small loss to the side edge of p 85/6 and to the bottom corner of p181/2. Small side edge tear at p 209. 1652032849London: John Wright 1652 A good copy of the 'Third Impression much Augmented' in full leather binding with new spine with raised bands and title label and contemporary boards. Blith 1604-1654 was known as a writer on husbandry. He was a supporter of Cromwell as the decorative title page with the motto 'Vive La Re Publick.' demonstrates. The book sets out and promotes improvements in husbandry and was suppressed after the Restoration in 1660. The binding is sound and clean. There is a lot of wear and leather loss at the corners. The marbled endpapers look to have had repair and are probably predate the binding work. The contents have toning and there has been some close trimming to margins notable in the epistles section at the beginning where page titles are missing but there is no loss to text. There is the signature of Philip Styles to the initial blank and a signature of Tho Wilkins 1683 to the recto of the decorative title - possibly although could be another Wilkins repeated at the side of the title page. Contents: decorative title; letterpress title blank verso; dedication 12pp; Various epistles 30pp; Poems 3 pp; errata 1p; text pp 1-262 with one diagram in the text 2 folding and 2 single plates; finis with signature of Tho W; appendix 8pp; table 10pp; finis. Extra leaves have been inserted in some places on instruction: between 230 and 231 and 248 and 249. A leaf has been added between 256 and 261 - on instruction and the ties work from 256 to the new leaf and to 262 There are some mispaginations with no loss of text: 22-73-24; 228-226-230; 235-234-235-238; 264-752-258. There is occasional staining and there is a little tearing in the gutter of the final leaves of the table. Occasional light annotation and underlining - most in pencil. Book size: 19 cms x 14 cms. Each year section is about 90 pp of text but also with numerous B&W photo plates that are unpaginated. Each year has a large fold-out printed spread-sheet and 1916 has a large fold-out map with parks picked out in green. The map measures 34" x 24". The reports were printed by varying St. Louis printers. Condition is VERY GOOD ; ex-library with a binding that has gilt numbers on spine with titles and a punched "Carnegie Library" on title pg of first section and a bookplate on front pastedown. No other library markings. Covers clean with mild shelf wear. Binding tight. Text clean and bright and plates excellent. The map has a couple of slits along the folds quite good for framing. Scarce. Text has the title pg. at pg 76 and ends with a 6 pg. part paginated as part of the whole called "An Account of Two Letters.from King James to the Pope." The first pg also the first pg. of text is headed: "The Arraignment Etc. of Sir Richard Grahme Viscount Preston and John Ashton." Condition is VERY GOOD ; the more recent binding is clean with a few tears to the paper surface of the spine little wear. Binding tight. The text had evidently been cut down to bind later and a few latter pgs have slight loss to the final line of text. The text is very clean possibly having been washed. Original pamphlet browned and worn at the edges first three and final two pages trimmed at the lower right just touching the gloss on the second to last page but no other text; otherwise intact. 4271pp<br /> <br /> Written by Edward Sexby under the pseudonym William Allen and often attributed to Colonel Titus. At one time a parliamentarian and involved in the capture of Charles in 1647 he later became disaffected with Cromwell and wrote the pamphlet Killing No Murder in 1657 arguing that the murder of a tyrant was no murder. He was captured in 1657 on a return visit to England to instigate a rebellion was interrogated by Cromwell and imprisoned in the tower of London where he died the next year 1658. Originally published in 1657 it was reincarnated during the Glorious Revolution. <br /> <br /> Provenance: Peter Laslett label dated 14 July 1956 Trinity Colege Cambridge on pastedown. 1604045016Paris: Ambrosium & Hieronymum Drouart 1604. Second Edition. Hardcover Full Leather. Very Good Condition. 5 volumes bound in 9 in contemporary calf. Worn at the edges and corners spines a little dry but intact and attractive overall. Volume 1 with a single title page some copies were apparently bound with a second title page noting Estienne the publisher of the Folio edition. Old bookplates inside covers ownership marks and stamps to titles and first pages occasionally trimmed a little close on the top edge just touching the running title scattered minor pencil marks light dampstain to the corners of a section of vol vii but otherwise clean and a very good set overall. <br /> <br /> This is the second edition of Thou's history published 1604-1608 and the first octavo edition. It was published just after the Folio edition a few months after for the first volumes and almost simultaneously thereafter. The first two octavo volumes corresponding to the first folio volume and printed in 1604 identified here as Pars I and Partis Primae Tomus II is bound in four volumes as is the second volume published in two octavo volumes in 1606 and corresponding to the Folio volume also published in 1606. They are identified as Tomus Secundi Pars Prima and Tomi Secundi Pars altera. The final volume identified as Libri VI is bound in one and published in 1608 the Folio edition was published in 1607-8. Because Thou was editing and changing his systems of identification as he published the books the naming system is a little odd - this final volume follows the third and fourth octavo volumes and not the first two in how it is numbered. 1005pp index; 1013 index; 958 index; 886 index; 501 privilege index. Graesse VII 147.<br /> <br /> Thou's history is one of the great monuments of Renaissance history and in its scientific factual take on events was much more a work of the enlightenment than the counter-reformation. As a result and despite some minor changes from the first edition all of the later books dealing with the wars of religion and other topics ended up on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1609. 1654032978London: Printed by J G for Nathanael Webb and William Grantham at the signe of the Bear in St Paul's Church-yard 1654 A good copy in contemporary full pigskin with blind ruled lines to boards. The pages have been cropped so the margins and gutter are quite small and the book is slightly bowed as if it has been held or kept in a pocket for ease of reference. It is certainly an entertaining read. Thomas Hall circa 1610-1665 was a Presbyterian and at the time of publication was Pastor of Kingsnorton. His congregation dismissed him at the Restoration - and if his sermons resembled his writing it is easy to imagine why. A small sample: 'Lastly as no man may weare his owne haire excessively long so he may not weare the long haire of another be it of a man a woman or it may be of some harlot who is now in Hell lamenting there the abuse of that excrement'. The binding is sound with a area of leather loss at the bottom of the spine and light general wear. Contents with title blank verso; poems 5pp; errata 1p; text pp 1-95 blank verso; Appendix title blank verso; text 99-125 Finis; rear blank. Decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. Paper is clean with toning. The title page is very browned at the edges which are slightly ragged and there is a small pasted piece of paper over one word on last page of poems. There is some mispagination but the text is continuous: 58-56-60; 78-69-80; and 92-39-94. Thormodus Torfaeus 1636-1719 was educated at the University in Copenhagen and became Royal Antiquary of Iceland and Royal Historian of the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway. This was his second work published in 1697 and concerns the activity of the Vikings in Orkney - particularly the material of the Orkneyinga Saga. The binding is in near fine condition and has raised bands and gilt titles to spine. The endpapers are recent and marbled with an old bookplate of J A Maconochie to the front pastedown and a newer bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson a noted Orcadian to the fep. 2 new blanks have been added front and rear.
