Vol. I. pp. Vol. II. pp. With 3 maps one of which is colored. First printed in 1792. According to Cox this Dublin 1793 printing was probably a pirate edition. The official second edition appeared a year later. Re-bound in modern half calf with gilt spine labels and marbled boards. An ink shelf number is handwritten on the verso of both titles with miniscule bleed through on the title of volume II. A shelf number is also written on the bottom margin of p. 101 in both volumes and on the final blanks in volume II. The map in volume II is re-hinged and contains a tear professionally sealed along the inner margin and crossing one printed corner tip. The interior shows some marginal foxing mild staining and age-toning. Pages 431-432 folio 3I4 in volume II contain a manufacturing tear through a large part of the leaf. The tear is carefully sealed; however due to paper slippage during printing some words of text near the tear are skewed out of place. Arthur Young 1741-1820 was one of the foremost British agriculturalists in his day. According to Edward Coxs bibliography Young " is unexcelled in relating personal adventures in observations of the agricultural situation and in descriptions of the many friends he met. He was near enough to the outbreak of the French Revolution to perceive that something unusual was astir and even experienced some personal contacts with the disordered state of affairs." Tiffany bookplate of Michigan business man and avid book collector Albert May Todd known as "the Peppermint King" on the inside front cover. The binding is in an excellent state of preservation with some rubbing on the outer corner tips of the boards. All edges are gilt. An ownership note dated 1814 is written in a miniscule old hand on the verso of the front fly-leaf; a later penciled inscription bellow apparently notes that the book was in a Sotheby's auction Dec. 5-9 1927. 1792032940Edinburgh : Printed for the Society 1792 A very good complete set in 5 volumes dated from 1792 to 1890 in matching nineteenth century half morocco with textured cloth bindings. Profusely illustrated and with a wide variety of important papers on the archaeology and history of Scotland. The bindings have 5 raised bands with 6 gilt decorative compartments of which 2 have title and volume details. They are all in very good to near fine clean condition with some light scuffing. Vol V has a slightly different paler textured cloth to the boards. Top page edges reddened. All have the decorative bookplate of David Murray to the front pastedown endpaper and Vol I has a couple of pasted catalogue entries for the work plus Murray's signature and an older note at the front endpapers. Contents: - Vol I: advert for the Society tipped in pre initial blank; title contents listing 12pp; historical account by Smellie with statutes membership details and errata list pp iii-xxxxiv; text 570pp with 7 plates of which 1 is folding. The contents are very clean with a small mark to the top of the title page; a stain to the foredge not affecting contents; some creasing to final leaf and the occasional spot or mark. Old pencil notes at pp 241 292 and 307 and small tipped-in inserts at p 295 and 297. This work was originally written by Penn 1644-1718 in 1669 while imprisoned in the Tower of London and it sets out the Quaker principles of self sacrifice and simple service to God. The calf binding is worn with splits at the spine joints some leather loss on the back board close to the spine and some loss to spine ends and corners. The boards are attached but only by their strings. It is well worth repairing. Internally some of the front pastedown has been removed. Contents with title blank verso; preface 8 pp; contents 14 pp; catalogue of names 4 pp; text pp 1-324; Title to the Second Parte 1702; preface 2pp; text pp 187; The prayer 1 pp Finis; book list 2pp. Margins are quite tight throughout and there is browning and marking - particularly in the margins. There has been worm activity: there is a tiny hole at the bottom margin of the title page which becomes a small track entering the bottom couple of lines of text or becoming small holes at times. The text is still readable. The stitching is generally sound - the bottom gather is occasionally a little loose. There is some mispagination but the ties work: Part 1 - 36-73-38; Part 2 185-141-99. The printer's book list at the end has a tear at the top. There is a small repaired edge tear to the side margin of p 433 and a small ink mark in the gutter of p 280 in Vol I. Vol II has less spotting. Pages 409 412 413 and 416 are lightly printed. Classed as 'fair' because the contemporary full calf bindings are very worn and because the map of Switzerland from Vol I is absent. William Coxe was a historian and priest who travelled widely - mainly as a tutor and companion to the wealthy. He was a keen observer who wrote and later published detailed accounts of his travels. In Travels in Switzerland he provides both detail on scenery flora and fauna and on history and social issues. This copy is in contemporary calf. Vol II has a replacement plain spine of the 'do it yourself' variety; Vols I looks to have a newer spine aged to match the original; Vol III has the original spine with title labels and gilt compartments. All the boards are present but the front board is detached in Vol III. The contents are in very good clean condition and all the plates are present together with the large fold out map of Mont Blanc. Vol I: lacks fep and preliminaries; title page with ink signature to top; dedication; preface; contents; text pp 1-428 with 2 plates. The son of the naturalist John Bartram. As a boy he accompanied his father on many of his travels to the Catskill Mountains the New Jersey Pine Barrens New England and Florida. In 1773 he embarked upon a four-year journey through eight southern colonies. Bartram made many drawings and took notes on the native flora and fauna and the native American Indians. In 1774 he explored the St. Johns River where he had memorable encounters with aggressive alligators and also visited a principal Seminole village at Cuscowilla where his arrival was celebrated with a great feast. He met Ahaya the Cowkeeper chief of the Alachua band of the Seminole tribe. When Bartram explained to the Cowkeeper that he was interested in studying the local plants and animals the chief was amused and began calling him Puc Puggy the flower hunter. Bartram continued his explorations of the Alachua Savannah or what is today Paynes Prairie. William Bartram wrote of his experiences exploring the Southeast in his book Travels through North & South Carolina East & West Florida the Cherokee Country the Extensive Territories of the Muscogulges or Creek Confederacy and the Country of the Chactaws Containing an Account of the Soil and Natural Productions of Those Regions Together with Observations on the Manners of the Indians published in 1791 and which is today simply known as Bartram's Travels. It was considered at the time one of the foremost books on American natural history. Many of Bartram's accounts of historical sites were the earliest records including the Georgia mound site of Ocmulgee. In addition to its contributions to scientific knowledge Travels is noted for its original descriptions of the American countryside. Bartram's writing influenced many of the Romantic writers of the day. William Wordsworth Samuel Taylor Coleridge and François René de Chateaubriand are known to have read the book and its influence can be seen in many of their works. Ephraim George Squier and Edwin Hamilton Davis in their book <em>Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley</em> name Bartram as "the first naturalist who penetrated the dense tropical forests of Florida."<br /><br /><strong>Condition:</strong><br /><br />Some rubbing to original boards page 143 of volume one has small burn mark affecting text half title bound upside down in back old water stain to plate of volume two.
