Abbot was a notable educator and writer in his time but is best known for being an Archbishop of Canterbury. Abbot provides brief descriptions of Africa Europe and Asia but he also devotes over 80 pages on a discussion of the New World including both North and South America. He even provides a short discussion of the North and South Poles. Interestingly in the margin of page 157 is a manuscript note in an old hand describing Egyptian Pyramids.</p> Printed for Will. In addition to being a discourse on its subject this work is a compilation with commentary on epitaphs arms and inscriptions on tombs monuments church windows et al. The work focuses on the dioceses of Canterbury London Norwich and Rochester. Lowndes and DNB both citing Wharton's Anglia Sacra note that John Weever 1576-1632-poet anthologist and antiquary-made extensive errors in the interpretation of numbers and in transcription. However both note the work's great utility to historians and biographers. Writing in 1899 Sidney Lee who wrote the Weever entry in DNB points out that " .almost all sepulchral inscriptions in Weever are now obliterated" and that "despite its defects Weever's book is invaluable." This copy conforms to the collation and pagination in ESTC S118104 and the Melvyl/UCR record. 1681H0011a2-a6b-b7c-c7d-2315 pages. Small square octavo 7 ¾" x 6 ¼" bound in full leather. Second edition. Thomas Barlow 1607-1691 was an English academic and clergyman who became Provost of The Queen's College Oxford and Bishop of Lincoln. He was considered in his own times and by Edmund Venables writing in the Dictionary of National Biography to have been a trimmer a reputation mixed in with his academic and other writings on casuistry. His views were in fact Calvinist and strongly anti-Catholic and he was one of the last English bishops to identify the Pope as the Antichrist He worked in the 1660s for the 'comprehension' of nonconformists but supported the crackdown of the mid-1680s; and declared loyalty to James II of England on his accession having strongly supported the Exclusion Bill which would have denied the Catholic James the succession. Pope Pius V's response to Queen Elizabeth I of England assuming governance of the Church of England included support of the imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots and her supporters in their attempts to take over England "ex turpissima muliebris libidinis servitute". A brief English Catholic uprising the Rising of the North had just failed. Pius then issued a bull Regnans in Excelsis dated April 27 1570 that declared Elizabeth I a heretic and released her subjects from their allegiance to her. In response Elizabeth who had thus far tolerated Catholic worship in private now actively started persecuting them. For a time his patron was Cardinal Giulio de' Medici and he mocked Popes and would be popes but in time he settled in Venice - the Anti-Rome. Ariosto called him "the scourge of Princes". He is remembered most for his satires and his letters which detail conversations with both the great names of the day as well as regular folk both women and men. His ability to manipulate the reader of his letters - which were carefully chosen and probably always meant for publication - by constructing a compelling narrative with himself as central protagonist - changed epistolary collections forever.
