With a large woodcut illustration of a Dutch merchant ship on the title page three woodcut illustrations in the text including 1 repeat of the title page illustration and one large decorated woodcut initial. 1 1 blank 4 42 pp. Very rare 17th-century edition in the original Dutch of the history of the famous Dutch privateer Claes Compaen 1587-1660. He was born at Oostzaan in the Netherlands and started his career as a merchant but soon became undoubtedly the most daring and notorious Dutch pirate of his day especially active around 1620. For three years he hijacked ships in the English Channel the Mediterranean the Caribbean and off the coasts of Africa America and the West-Indies. The present story was first printed in 1659 and ran through more than a dozen editions to 1803 all with the main text set in a textura gothic type in the later editions a sign that it was a popular book for a lower-class audience. All editions are quite rare but especially the 17th-century ones thus a very rare edition of one of the most famous pirates.With the bookplate of Buijnsters-Smets on the inside of the front wrapper. The spine is somewhat damaged internally somewhat browned foxed and water stained the paper of some leaves is quite thin leaving some holes not affecting the text. With a large woodcut illustration of a Dutch merchant ship on the title page 3 woodcut illustrations in the text including a repeat of the woodcut on the title page and a large decorated woodcut initial. 6 42 pp. Very rare 17th-century Dutch edition of the earliest published biography devoted entirely to a pirate and one of the most vivid narratives of maritime freebooting to emerge from the Dutch Golden Age.Claes Gerritszoon Compaen 1587-1660 began respectably as a merchant before turning privateer and ultimately pirate. Around 1620 he abandoned the constraints of licensed privateering despite holding a commission from the States-General and the Prince of Orange and embarked upon an independent career of sea-robbery. For three years he hijacked ships in the English Channel the Mediterranean the Caribbean and off the coasts of Africa America and the West-Indies acquiring a formidable reputation. Contemporary chroniclers record that Spaniards Portuguese French and English alike feared his attacks. Officially branded a Zee-Roover and Schelm he nevertheless achieved legendary status and remarkably was eventually pardoned and allowed to return to Oostzaan where he lived out his days as a local celebrity.First published in 1659 the present work proved an immediate success and ran through numerous editions into the early 19th century to 1803. All editions are now scarce the 17th-century editions 1659 1662 1675 1688 in particular. The text is set in gothic textura type characteristic of popular Dutch prose works of the period and most editions including the present are illustrated with woodcuts. With a black oval library stamp of Missie Huis Arnhem in the bottom outer corner of the front wrapper the number 9<<1621:1627>> in the top margin of the front wrapper and the title page an ownership stamp of de Mul on the inside of the front wrapper and on the title page and a small bookplate of Librairie ancienne et mod Nartinus! Nijhoff La Haye mounted on the inside of the front wrapper. The paper wrapper is worn the spine has previously been stengthened with black paper/tape the whole is now covered with protective clear tape. Slight foxing and browning throughout with a small tear in the outer margin of pp. 39-40 not affecting the text. 1627032988London: Adam Islip 1627 A fair copy of the extremely scarce '2nd impression' of Edward Grimeston's Generall Historie of the Netherlands. Grimeston was known as prolific translator and the first edition of the Historie was largely taken from J F Le Petit's 'La Grand Chronique Ancienne et Moderne de Hollande'. It was a fairly faithful translation but he researched the subject adding text on the years 1601-1608 using sources such as Emanuel Demetrius. It was very popular but he was criticised for not including more on the efforts and achievements of the English troops in Flanders. In his address at the beginning of the 2nd 1627 edition he states that he did in 1608 'observe my Authors.They were men borne in those countries who would arrogate as much as might be to their own Nation'. In the new edition he 'had conference with some of the great Commanders and Captaines' from the English side and endeavoured to redress the balance. He wanted to also bring the edition up to date but apparently his printers did not allow it so this work was done by William Crosse. The second edition has fewer engravings 29 and the pagination has numerous errors presumably testament to all the revisions and additions. This copy is contemporary full leather which was rebacked at some point to preserve some of the spine. The repair was not particularly high quality and there is some old tape at the internal spine joints. The boards themselves are generally clean with some scuffing. There is a lot of repair to corners now flaking and the bottom corner of the back board is soft. The spine remnants are quite dry and flaky. Internally there is an old note at the front endpaper repeated on the initial blank which also has an elaborate signature of William Forde of Manchester 1800. The note states that the book is rare and that he has found an entry in White's Catalogue for it in 1801 at a cost of 18/-. Contents with engraved title - with signatures to top; dedication 2pp; Translator's preface 2pp; text pp 1-1262 with continuation by Crosse pp 1276-1588 with 29 three quarter page engravings Finis; Index 13pp Finis. The pagination is all over the place eg pp 1262 - blank - 1276 where the Continuation starts. Please enquire if you would like to see the full list. All the ties work bar one - 1266-1249 - but this is because the tie is wrong - the text is fine. The contents are generally clean with occasional marking and the odd edge tear and are complete. Elaborate head and tailpieces and initial capitals. The paper is lightly toned and quite light in weight. The initial leaves through to p 1 are very fragile with some loss at the edges. There is light persistent staining at the top margin which is not particularly noticeable until the end of the work where the stain is at the top corner which becomes quite fragile. There is sporadic slight worming in the bottom corner - and occasional exploits elsewhere - but away from the text. A New Voyage to the E Indies' by Pouchot de Chantassin was first published in Paris in 1692.'The Voyages of the Sieur Le Maire to the Canary-Islands Cape Verde Senegal and Gambia' by Joseph-Jacques Le Maire was first published in 1695. Le Maire's work is particularly interesting because of information it provides on W Africa in the 1600's including the extent of European interaction and the slave trade. This copy is in a fairly new full leather binding with raised bands and gilt titles to the spine. The binding is in near fine condition. New endpapers and initial and final blanks have been added. Contents: title page; author's preface 2pp; E Indies pp 1-187; Finis map of E Indies lacking; folding map of 'The Canarie or Fortunate Isles'; text pp 1-128 with 5 plates and sections on the rivers Zamenee St Domingo and Geva; Finis. The paper is in remarkably good condition throughout apart from a few tears especially considering that the book is over 400 years old - if only some of our modern books were printed on paper as durable as this! Joseph Hall Bishop of Norwich was a Calvinistic Anglican and an English representative at the Synod of Dordt. He held some evangelical and puritan principles but was not part of the Puritan movement. A beautifully preserved copy in an attractive binding of Defoe's "pseudo-Quaker rebuke to the Earl of Mar the leader of the Jacobite rebels making much of his violation of the Oath of Abjuration pointing out the folly of his hopes of English support and prophesying his defeat" University of London Library-Senate House catalog note.Moore reports six copies of which I could confirm four still in the collections. World Cat lists four more for a total of eight library holdings of the first edition. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo 8vo. 32 pages. The high quality paper upon which the pamphlet was printed remains bright and in excellent condition. The pamphlet has been rebound in the late 19th century in three-quarter red leather and marbled paper over boards. Worn at the tips and head and foot of the spine. Additional pages of laid paper have been bound in to create a book thick enough for the title and date to be stamped in bright gilt on the spine. No foxing in this copy although the first and last page title page and verso of the catalog are a bit soiled and there is a spot in the margin of one page not affecting any text. Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker 1675 Utrecht 1680 and Leiden 1698. EB11. His Aegyptiaca first printed in 1683 compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. He argues against the theory put forth by Sir John Marsham and by John Spencer that Jewish traditions were derived from Egyptian practices. This second edition has been expanded from the first. The pages are clean with only occasional foxing to the first and last few leaves and a slight browning to the title-page. There is an interesting ex libris plate from James Harrop Dransfield on the front paste-down. It shows a head in profile impaled upon a sword with the motto: Cutta Cavat Lapidem Non Vi Sed Saepe Cadendol. Also contains the bookplate of James Harrop Dransfield with the quotation "Gutta Cavat Lapidem No Vi Sed Saepe Cadendo." or "</b>A drop of water hollows a stone not by force but by continuously dripping." and it has a Head impaled on a Standing Sword. <b>This is an extremely rare book sold by Calixbooks online. NO Copies of the First Edition are present in ANY library. All libraries have the 1685 edition. No copies of the 1685 edition are available online. 1672032862London: Matthew Walbancke. Matthew Walbancke and Henry Twyford 1672 A very good copy in largely contemporary binding. In two parts with separate title pages dated 1647 and 1651 respectively. It is suggested that John Selden 1584-1654 is the true author of the work which was then edited by Nathaniel Bacon - whose name is on the title to the Continuation. However this is still a matter of argument. The work was produced originally as the Civil War came to its close and the Commonwealth was established and is written against the royal prerogative. A 'secret' or 'private' edition was produced in 1672 after the restoration of the monarchy. It is stated that 750 copies were produced and many were burnt or otherwise destroyed. The edition has the 2 works in one is dated as for the 1647/51 edition and there are variants of it. Detailed study Joseph A Dane University of Chicago Press suggests that the remnants of 1672 copies were put back together and sections reprinted later. This copy is clearly a 1672 'secret' edition of which parts are likely to be later printings. According to ESTC this copy has the Title page in setting A; Quires B-C are in setting 2; and Quire D in setting b. The binding is full calf with contemporary boards with blind ruled lines and new matching spine with raised bands and title label. Endpapers have been retained with repair and there are some ink numerals to the front and a latin quotation with initials to the verso of the fep. 1613033211<p>London: Printed by John Pindley for Samuel Macham 1613 A fair copy of the extremely scarce 1st edition in newer half leather binding. Classed as 'fair' because 2 leaves are in facsimile and a further leaf has lost its side margin which may have had reference notes. Bishop Joseph Hall 1574-1656 held high positions in the English Church and was known for his scholarship and skills in debate. He became a Doctor of Divinity in 1612 and turned increasingly from writing to preaching. Henry Prince of Wales made Hall his Chaplain in 1608 and he was invited by James I to preach a sermon on the 19th anniversary of his accession. Contents: title blank verso; dedication 4pp; text 109pp; Finis. The title page has an elaborate archway design and there are decorative headpieces and initial capitals. The binding is in near fine clean condition with title label to spine and marbled boards. The endpapers are contemporary with the binding. Text paper is lightly toned but generally clean. Page edges are a little fragile and some corner tips are turned over. There are a few small ink annotations - one on the title page one scholarly - the rest not.
