Each postcard has an illustration of a melancholy young Japanese woman dressed in a kimono printed around her are the words and musical score of a folk song from one of 5 Japanese regions - Akita Kusatsu Yoneyama Kagoshima and Yamanaka. Image of Chinese pagoda in red upper cover rubbed with a little loss. Upper corners bumped. Album measures 26.6 x 19.8cm. In original worn and marked pictorial card slipcase. Very good copy. This volume illustrates the famous sightseeing areas in Shanghai Suzhou Wuxi Zhenjiang Nanjing Wuhu Hangzhou Jiaxing and Songjiang. This set of manga postcards were published in1933 by Nippon Life Insurance Company to promote the benefits of life insurance. <br> <br>Nippon Life Insurance Company was established in Osaka in 1889. <br> <br>Instead of presenting figures and tables each manga tries to illustrate the sense of reassurance people would experience when they buy this company's insurance. For example a manga by Okamoto Ippei a famous manga illustrator in the pre-war Japan depicts a "Family Boat" where young and old members each wear a lifebelt represent their insurance policy while sailing. Its caption says that a insurance policy is a rescue buoy for life which would make people feel peaceful even on the roughest of seas. Another card features a young attractive geisha sitting coquettishly at home is an advertisement for an old age insurance policy. The text assures the viewer that their policy will be paid back in full when the policy matures. The couple plan to use the money to fund the granddaughter's honeymoon trip and their own holiday anticipating that they would live long enough to receive the matured fund. . [日本生命保険株式会社]. Text accompanied by small handcoloured illustrations showing the minor criminal offences described above. 7 x 3cm section of loss upper section of colour woodblock upper cover stain lower cover upper cover and first two leaves lacks lower cover but contents are complete neatly rethreaded. Still an attractive copy of a fascinating and scarce item. A fascinating insight into crime and punishment in 1880s Japan this little booklet provides colour-illustrated explanations of minor crimes with details of the punishments which apply to them in Shiga Prefecture. It appears to have been designed for distribution to the public - perhaps to shops small businesses etc. From it we learn amongst other things that you could be imprisoned for between 3 and 10 days or fined a sum between 1 and 1.95 yen for giving lodging to a foreigner without recording their address properly. A sentence of 2 to 5 days imprisonment or a fine applied to people who sold raw fugu highly poisonous without proper treatment sold the meat of diseased animals offered photos or woodblock prints of the Emperor and Empress for sale or cremated the dead without official permission or in a place other than the officially approved cremation sites while a sentence of between 1 and 12 days applied to crimes which included flying paper kites near overhead telegraph lines. . 今井喜兵衛. A beautifully produced little book with colour illustrations showing the uses of traditional dyestuffs. Each small tipped in colour plate shows the colour produced by a dye plant or other dyestuff and examples of the designs in which they were used. This is followed by a section of explanatory text on the various fabric dyes illustrated in the volume. <br> <br>This book is a reprint of material originally produced by Haruta Nagatoshi 1753-1800 an eighteenth century armour-maker and was re-published in the 1930s as part of a series of reproductions of classical Japanese writings. . 日本古典全集刊行会. Relief shown by hachures. Printed on folded double leaves. Bound accordion style patterned paper covered boards. 26 x 17cm. Very nice clean volumes. Japanese text with Romanised titles on most maps and Romanised title on title page. The orientation of the maps vary. This atlas is surprisingly scarce. Printed colour map on a single newspaper leaf 53 x 40.7 cm; 59.8 x 45 cm sheet inset text box marginal browning and at the folds but remarkably bright in very good condition. WWII map of China showing most of China Indo-China Thailand and Korea with territory captured and controlled by Japan shaded in orange and red published by the Chicago Daily Tribune barely six weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. The text on the map reads "Since 1937 China has been at war with Japan. Lacking many essentials of war the Chinese nevertheless have managed to maintain a front against the aggressors. China's principal life line is the Burma road shown on the map which starts at Lashio Burma and extends to Kunming Yunnan province where it links with connections to Chunking the present Chinese capital". <br> <br>Based on a Rand McNally map the Tribune briskly got to work issuing maps for readers showing the beginnings of the war with Japan. 1587033342<p>At London printed in Aldergate Street at the signe of the Starre: John Harrison George Bishop Rafe Newberie Henrie Denham and Thomas Woodcocke 1587 A good copy of the 2nd edition of Holinshed's Chronicles bound in 3 volumes. This edition is particularly known for its association with William Shakespeare who used it for historical background for example in Macbeth. It lacks the extensive woodcuts found in the 1st but has ornate initial capitals and head and tailpieces. This set was rebound in full morocco leather in the 1800's. The bindings have flat spines with gilt titles and volume numbers and gilt lining. The boards have gilt lining around the edges and gilt dentelles on the inner edges. Endpapers are marbled and all volumes have silk bookmarks. The leather is worn on the edges spine joints spine ends and corners but the bindings are currently sound. Vol I has a small closed tear at the top spine end. Vol II has a scuff across the front board. All page edges are gilted. The 2nd edition brings the history up to the date of publication and as such attracted the displeasure of Queen Elizabeth I who had clear views on how her reign and actions should be recorded. The Archbishop of Canterbury was required by the Privy Council in February 1587 to recall the work and reform it. The process of printing large works was very different to that of our digital world and the censorshjp and revision process must have caused chaos at the printers. Sections of the work on Scotland in Vol I and parts of the Chronicles of England are affected and all copies reflect the censorship mess to some extent with odd pagination cancels substitution and gaps in some copies. This set is largely complete lacks title to Chronicles of England and the colophon. Very different thicknesses and colour of the paper suggest where sections have been substituted and there are several instances of mispagination. First published in 1577 this work was revised and reissued after censorship in 1587. This is the 1587 reissue - said to have been used by Shakespeare in writing Macbeth. This copy is in a recent full calf binding with a panelled design to the boards with gilt titles and date. It has minimal wear. New endpapers and intial and final blanks have been added. Contains: decorative title page dated 1585 with some professioanl repair to the side edge; dedication pp 3-4; Contents list p5; authorship p6; The description of Scotland pp7-23 blank verso; title page - The Historie of Scotland dated 1585; dedication p 27-28; The Historie of Scotland pp 29-464; first table alphabeticall 12 pp; second table alphabeticall 15pp; finis. These two index sections do not cover Scotland - the third and fourth tables are missing together with the Colophon. There are 2 problems with the collation. The leaf with 325/6 is missing and has been replaced with a blank sheet. A fascimile of this leaf is loose in the book. There is considerable mispagination with pp 430-439 - part of the havoc created by censorship of the work at the time. The pagination is: 430-436 tie works 437-432 tie does not work - pp 438/431 should be after 437 and are missing but supplied loose in facsimile - 433-439 tie works. Overall the contents are in very good clean condition with the occasional small stain or mark ink drink at 98/9. However pp 419-424 are in much more fragile condition suggesting that they were added in from another volume. There is a large ink splatter affecting the gutter and some of the text in the lower part on pp 419-424 although all the text is readable. Side edges are browned and fragile in this section and there are some paper repairs on pp 421/2. There is a small burn hole in the text at pp 389/90 and tiny burn holes in the gutter of pp 401/2. Printed text in Latin. A leaf from a vulgate Bible with glosses commentary and other matter by the 13th century Catholic theologian Nicolaus de Lyra 1270-1349. De Lyra's insistence on a literal rather than allegorical interpretation of the Bible was a major source of influence on Martin Luther and provided theological impetus to the Reformation. This particular leaf includes passages from Exodus 19 as well as de Lyra's commentary on those passages. It is guaranteed to be more than 500 years old. 1598955341598. 1598. Fair. - An original holograph document attractively penned in an unknown hand on 13-1/4 inch high by 15-5/8 inch wide cream paper. Fifteen lines boldly penned with several flourishes signed "Christophorus Popel Barro a Lobcowicz" by Christoph Popel Baron of Lobkowicz who was Chief Steward of Bohemia under the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The document is further annotated with 8 lines penned across the center of the verso with an unidentified signature and another 8 lines penned vertically on the verso above the center panel also with an unidentified signature. The faint remnants and outline of a red wax seal are centered at the top and bottom edges of the verso. Folded twice vertically and four times horizontally with several tears along the folds. There is some foxing present especially at the top and bottom. Good. <p>The Chief Steward of Bohemia under Emperor Rudolf II Christoph Popel Baron of Lobkowicz 1549-1609 was a close friend of the celebrated court painter Hans von Aachen. Lobkowicz who was known for his language and diplomatic skills was tasked with welcoming visitors from within and without the Holy Roman Empire to the Emperor's Court and for negotiating alliances in the war against the Turks. Lobkowicz was responsible for the peace negotiations with the Polish King Sigismund. Lobkowicz spent considerable sums on art work for his residence and commissioned jewelry precious watches and valuable objects. He was buried in the chapel in the Prague Cathedral. [1598]. unknown
1522032982Coloniae: Heronem Alopeciu 1522 An extremely scarce early edition published in September 1522 - a month after the authorised Basel edition - by Hero Alopecius in Cologne. We have only been able to find one reference to it University of Toronto. Erasmus arranged publication of the Basel edition in August 1522 in response to the appearance of an unauthorised version in Cambridge in 1521. He had originally worked on the content in 1509-1511 and this work developed from his earlier writing and lectures became a popular and important text book on the writing of letters. It was much reprinted. This copy is newly rebound in full calf with panelled design to boards and gilt titles to spine. The page edges are red although this may not be contemporary. New endpapers. Contents with 2 initial blanks - the first with ink notation on the edition - this looks likely to be 1800's in date and the paper does not look contemporary. Title with elaborate design including 2 cherubs holding a shield with 3 crowns with contemporary latin note at the top; letter from Erasmus to Nicolao Beraldo pp 2-4; text with beautiful decorative initial capitals pp 5-414 Finis. No final blanks. There is some scholarly annotation in latin and gentle underlining - this could be contemporary. There are a number of mispaginations but the ties work in all cases: 47-74-75-50; 51-78-79-54; 55-82-83-58; 59-98-87-62-63-90-65; 170-117-172; 177-168-179; 192-191-192-193. There are a number of professional paper repairs: to the side of the title page and page 13/14; from p 357 onwards where the top corner tips had been burnt out - this begins with the just the tip but towards the end of the work includes some page numbers and just clips a couple of margin notes - the final 2 leaves have repair to sides. These corners do not have the red edges. Towards the end of the work there are a few pages with some grubbiness at the bottom corners. Otherwise the work is very clean with high quality paper. One group of pages trimmed a little close with loss of some text to the table on leaf 53 of the genealogy of the Kings of Austria. Generally minor scatterd foxing browning and staining - mostly quite clean. Magnificently illustrated throughout with armorial devices - first and only edition of an outstanding work on the Andalusian aristocracy. 10 348 ff.<br /> <br /> Argote de Molina great humanist and librarian also edited the first Spanish book on hunting 1582 and a history of the embassy sent by Henry III of Castille in 1403--1406 to the Court of Tamerlaine at Samarkand 1582.
