1708219243東京. Tokyo.: 須原屋茂兵衛. Suwaraya Mohei. Hoei 5 1708. Black and white woodblock map with yellow outlining in original hand colour 55.8 x 127cm map; 59.5 x 131cm sheet folding into the original Japanese wrappers chipped and rather worn 26.4 x 17.4cm the map with old repairs laid down on washi rather browned and wormed at the folds but with no serious loss the sheet age-toned and a little dusty but overall in remarkably good condition. Preserved in a modern blue linen Japanese case with toggle-closures. A famous woodblock-printed Japanese map of the world by renowned Edo Period map-maker Ishikawa Tomonobu who is also known as Ishikawa Ryūsen. This is a revised version of an earlier map produced by Ishikawa in 1688.

The map appears to draw on Chinese and Portuguese geographical knowledge. The Chinese production of world maps had been transformed by the influence of the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci who collaborated with Chinese cartographers to produce a 1584 map of the world. In Japan the production of maps of "the myriad countries" or "the international countries" bankoku had been inspired by contact with Portuguese missionaries and with the Dutch in the 16th century.

Ishikawa's map broadly resembles the Ricci map in being placed in an oval frame with the Pacific and thus also China and Japan at the centre. The content though is different. While Ricci's map is oriented to the north Ishikawa's is oriented to the east with America at the top of the page and the sketchy outlines of Europe including 'Ikiresu' England and a large and clearly marked Holland and Africa 'Kafuri' at the bottom. This orientation apparently influenced by the first world map in Japan "Bankoku Sōzu" 万国総図 which was published in 1645. Interestingly although Ishikawa had earlier produced a quite detailed and fairly accurate map of Japan the Japan shown on this world map is a rather loosely outlined collection of islands in which for example Ryūkyū the Ryukyu Kingdom now Okinawa and Hachijōjima appear much larger than they are in reality. Japan is also unusually oriented making it appear as though Ezo now Hokkaido is in the middle of the Pacific. It seems that the cartographer's interest here was less in outlining Japan in detail than in broadly setting out the country's place in relation to the land masses to the east and west.

Like other Japanese world maps of the Edo period and like Ricci's map Ishikawa's image of the world includes imagined countries such as 'The Land of Giants". The continuing centrality of China in Japanese thought is indicated by the fact that Ishikawa's map contains a very clearly marked depiction of the Great Wall and that the map is decorated at the top with depictions of a Japanese and a Chinese sailing ship. The text at the bottom gives estimated distances between Hizen Province where the port of Nagasaki provided Japan's main official outlet to the world in this age of seclusion and various places in China and between Hizen and the Ryūkyū Kingdom. It also gives the estimated distance from Korea to Tsushima Island which served as Japan's gateway for diplomatic and trade relations with Korea.

Engelbert Kaempfer a German physician and explorer brought back the 1688 edition of this map printing to Europe after his stay in Japan between 1690 and 1692. The map was introduced to European audiences in the 17th century and impacted on later European cartographic endeavours.

Copies of this rare and historically significant map are held only in a handful of major collections: the British Library National Diet Library NDL of Japan the Staatsbibliothek of Berlin University of California Berkeley's Japanese Historic Maps Collection and the University of British Columbia. . 須原屋茂兵衛. 1780180990Paris: Veuve Duchesne 1780. A sailor's companion First edition of this pocket-size gift book from the revolutionary period in a charming contemporary binding. Thematically focused on maritime affairs the book has chapters on the sea winds navigation instruments ships artillery the navy and its organisation and a dictionary of nautical terms. The frontispiece features a diagram of a ship with its various parts labelled and identified. The volume additionally includes a description of American English French and Spanish colonies in Northern and Central America a list of famous battles won by the French against the English and a calendar for the year 1780. The practice of giving books as New Year's gifts étrennes began to develop in France in the 18th century particularly in the form of pocket-sized almanacs sold for 1 January. Over time the livres d'étrennes evolved into a distinct genre with the practical function of the almanac gradually giving way to lighter content and decorative illustrations. 1793W1985Dublin Ireland: P. Wogan P. Byrne J. Moore and W. Jones 1793. Frontispiece vi 2 303 pages. The first printing of the Dublin edition preceded in the same year only by the 2-volume first London edition--both preceding the first U. S. edition published in 1794. The Dublin edition is significant not only for its apparent scarcity but also for the frontispiece an unusual mezzotint portrait of a younger Benjamin Franklin that appears in no other edition and has seldom if ever been reproduced. The clean and tight book has been sympathetically rebacked retaining the original red leather title patch. All edges of the textblock were stained a pale green perhaps when the rebacking was done--the staining intrudes 1/16" onto the top and bottom margins of the frontispiece. Very light and faint foxing throughout; occasional smudges in the margins. Two large but light waterstains to the frontispiece but only minor and relatively unobtrusive intrusion into the image. Missing the front free endpaper. The book's condition is much nicer than it sounds; certainly an acceptable copy for the serious collector. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Carl Peter Thunberg 1743-1828 was a Swedish botanist and a student of Carl Linnaeus. His travel log first published in Swedish as "Resa uti Europa Asia Africa " in four volumes 8vo. Uppsala 1788-93 recounts his botanical collecting voyages with the Dutch East India Company to South Africa Java and Japan. Among other observations Thunberg describes the Hottentot Khoikhoi peoples of South Africa and mentions his visit to Nagasaki in Japan. The translator of the French edition claims that Thunbergs verbose and detailed style makes an exact translation undesirable. Use was therefore made of Forsters German abbreviation or abstract but several passages which Forster omitted are here preserved. The final section pp. 405-450 contains excerpts related to Japan taken from J.G. Georgis "Voyage en Sibérie" including a description of Japanese paper-making. 1705032586Autrecht: Ches Antoine Schouten Marchand Libraire 1705 A fair copy of the 1st edition of the French translation of this work by Willem Bosman. Classed as 'fair' because it contains 19 of the 27 plates issued. Bosman lived in Dutch West Africa from 1688 to 1701 and worked for the Dutch West India Company becoming Chief Merchant until his forced retirement at the age of 29. He returned to Europe and wrote up his experience of West Africa using a letter format. It was extremely popular particularly because his was the first full and accessible account of the area. It has been used as a major source of information on the Dutch Slave Trade. This copy has been fairly recently rebound in a full leather binding with gilt compartments and titles to spine and gilt decoration to board corners. The binding is in very good clean condition with light corner wear. There is the bookplate of O and H Brunner to the front pastedown endpaper. Duodecimo 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" bound in original publisher's full uniform contemporary French sponged calf with gilt-tooled spines. First French edition after the 1748 English edition.

Henry Ellis was a traveler hydrographer and colonial governor returned from Italy in 1746 just in time to find an expedition to search for a north-west passage on the point of sailing. He appears to have been in easy circumstances; his name stands in the list of subscribers to the north-west expedition and he had sufficient interest to get attached to it nominally as agent for the committee and really as hydrographer surveyor and mineralogist the expedition consisting of two vessels the Dobbs galley of 180 and California of 150 tons left Gravesend on 20 May 1746 joined the Hudson's Bay convoy in Hollesley Bay and finally sailed from Yarmouth on the 31st. They parted from the convoy on 18 June made Resolution Island on 8 July and after a tedious passage through Hudson's Straits rounded Cape Digges on 8 August and on the 11th 'made the land on the west side the Welcome in latitude 64° N.' Bad weather drove them to the southward and prevented their doing anything more that season. They wintered in Hayes River in a creek about three miles above Fort York where a quarrel with the agent of the Hudson's Bay Company gave an unwonted piquancy to the dark and weary days. They suffered much from scurvy the prevalence of which Ellis attributes to their having got two kegs of brandy from Fort York for their Christmas merrymaking and in a minor degree to the 'governor' not permitting the Indians to supply them with fresh provisions. On 29 May 1747 the ice broke up and they were able to warp to the mouth of their creek; on 9 June they got down to Fort York. There they were allowed to get some provisions and stores and on the 24th cleared the river and 'stood to the northward on the discovery'. On 1 July each of the two ships sent away her long-boat but owing apparently to some ill-feeling between the two captains without any prearranged plan for working in concert. The consequence was that they separately went over the same ground discovering naming and examining the several creeks and inlets on the west side of Hudson's Bay the double examination perhaps compensating for the confusion arising from the double naming. Before the season closed in they had satisfied themselves that the only possible exit from Hudson's Bay on the west must be through the Welcome and that very probably there was no way out except that on the east by which they had come in. The result may not seem much; but as it served to put an end to the idea that the passage must lie through Hudson's Bay it was at least so much gain to accurate knowledge. After 21 August the weather broke and they decided in council 'to bear away for England without further delay.' On the 29th they entered Hudson's Straits passed Resolution Island on 9 September and arrived at Yarmouth on 14 Octivwe. Ellis's share in the work of the expedition had really been very slender but the reputation of it has been commonly assigned to him by reason of the narrative which he published the following year under the title A Voyage to Hudson's Bay by the DobbsGalley and California in the years 1746 and 1747 for Discovering a North-West Passage 1748; a work which with many valuable observations on tides on the vagaries of the compass and on the customs of the Eskimos a people then practically unknown mingles a great deal of speculation on the certain existence of the passage on magnetism on fogs on rust and other matters all more or less ingenious but now known to be wildly erroneous. Such as it was the book commended its author to the scientific workers of the day and on 8 February 1748-9 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. Possibly in acknowledgment of his scientific labors but more probably by some family interest he was afterwards appointed successively governor of Georgia and of Nova Scotia from which employment he retired about 1770. He seems to have spent his later years as a wanderer on the continent was at Marseilles in 1775 and died at Naples on 21 January 1806.

Condition:

Some dark spots to spine else a very good copy.
Ballard Fils hardcover

Translated by Pierre Vincent Benoist. Sabin 3871; Palau 251346; Howes B223; Field 94 First French edition.

William Bartram was an American naturalist. The son of the naturalist John Bartram. As a boy he accompanied his father on many of his travels to the Catskill Mountains the New Jersey Pine Barrens New England and Florida. In 1773 he embarked upon a four-year journey through eight southern colonies. Bartram made many drawings and took notes on the native flora and fauna and the native American Indians. In 1774 he explored the St. Johns River where he had memorable encounters with aggressive alligators and also visited a principal Seminole village at Cuscowilla where his arrival was celebrated with a great feast. He met Ahaya the Cowkeeper chief of the Alachua band of the Seminole tribe. When Bartram explained to the Cowkeeper that he was interested in studying the local plants and animals the chief was amused and began calling him Puc Puggy the flower hunter. Bartram continued his explorations of the Alachua Savannah or what is today Paynes Prairie. William Bartram wrote of his experiences exploring the Southeast in his book Travels through North & South Carolina East & West Florida the Cherokee Country the Extensive Territories of the Muscogulges or Creek Confederacy and the Country of the Chactaws Containing an Account of the Soil and Natural Productions of Those Regions Together with Observations on the Manners of the Indians published in 1791 and which is today simply known as Bartram's Travels. It was considered at the time one of the foremost books on American natural history. Many of Bartram's accounts of historical sites were the earliest records including the Georgia mound site of Ocmulgee. In addition to its contributions to scientific knowledge Travels is noted for its original descriptions of the American countryside. Bartram's writing influenced many of the Romantic writers of the day. William Wordsworth Samuel Taylor Coleridge and François René de Chateaubriand are known to have read the book and its influence can be seen in many of their works. Ephraim George Squier and Edwin Hamilton Davis in their book Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley name Bartram as "the first naturalist who penetrated the dense tropical forests of Florida."

Condition:

Some rubbing to original boards page 143 of volume one has small burn mark affecting text half title bound upside down in back old water stain to plate of volume two.
