Biography of Thomas Wolsey born c. 1475 made cardinal 1515 Henry VIII's lord chancellor and from 1515-1529 Wolsey's rule in foreign affairs was near-complete. Unable to arrange an annulment for Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon and unpopular with those around Anne Boleyn Henry's proposed new bride Wolsey was arrested near York in November 1530 and accused of treason. He died on 29 November of the same year as he was traveling to face trial. Very Good plus in unsigned contemporary fine binding of black morocco the back with five raised bands and gilt rules and lettering and blind tooling the covers with gilt chain decoration bordering intricately blind tooled decorations the page block edges stained brown edges of covers gilt. The armorial bookplate of the private library of Thornham Hall front paste down. Very Good Plus light rubbing to morocco toning at edges of paste downs internally quite clean and bright. Hill 1168 Second and best edition<br /><br />The Alceste brought Lord Amherst to China to serve as ambassador and specifically to negotiate the China trade at the time a matter of dispute between China and Great Britain.M'Leod who was surgeon on the ship describes the voyage out the various calls in the East Indies including touching at Batavia surveying off Korea the visit to Okinawa another to Manila and the shipwreck off the coast of Sumatra and subsequent rescue from Malay pirates. A brief but interesting interview with Napoleon at St. Helena is also included in the narrative. This was one of the most popular travel books of its time portraying the Far East to a much wider audience than had been reached by earlier accounts. The idyllic descriptions of Lewchew undoubtedly appealed to the romantic sensibilities of the era. Indeed buoyed by its success M'Leod published another work recounting his time as a slaver <i>A Voyage to Africa with some Account of the Manners and Customs of the Dahomian People</i>.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Attractive half rebind some foxing through out with no spotting to plates else a very good copy. Atlas with title list of plates 14 engraved plates & large folding engraved map. Text volumes are small octavo 7¾" x 4½" 19th century quarter calf & boards spines tooled in gilt morocco lettering pieces; atlas is quarto 11" x 7½" in period tree calf spine tooled in gilt. Translated by J Castéra. Howes S-117 First French Edition.<br /><br />Martin Sauer was an English civil servant who knew Russian French and German. He became acquainted with Joseph Billings in St Petersburg in the 1780s. He agreed to join Billings expedition as his secretary and interpreter. It was agreed that he would write the official account but there is some controversy about his actives when he returned to St Petersburg in 1794. It has been suggested that he left hurriedly for England with much of the important archival material from the voyage including diaries and secret reports so that he could publish a record of the expedition before Russian authorities and scholars in the Academy of Sciences could review its details. Sauer's <i>An account of the Geographical and Astronomical Expedition to the Northern Parts of Russia</i> was published in London in 1802. It contains an abundance of detail about eastern Siberia and the Aleutian Islands and records the expeditions visits to Kodiak Island Prince William Sound and the coast south as far as Yakutat Bay. <br /><br />The chart was made by Aaron Arrowsmith from Sauer's notes and Billings observations and the whole complements well the other contemporary accounts of the expedition by the cartographer Gavriil Sarychev and the naturalist Carl Heinrich Merck. Aaron Arrowsmith 1750–1823 was an English cartographer engraver and publisher and founding member of the Arrowsmith family of geographers. He moved to Soho Square London from Winston County Durham when about twenty years of age and was employed by John Cary the engraver and William Faden. He became Hydrographer to the Prince of Wales ca. 1810 and subsequently to the King in 1820. In January 1790 he made himself famous by his large chart of the world on Mercator projection. Four years later he published another large map of the world on the globular projection with a companion volume of explanation.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Some rubbing and wear to coves of both atlas and text volumes some chipping to spine ends small gouge at back of atlas and stamp to front end paper else in very good condition. Initially named California Wesleyan College it petitioned the state to change its name to University of the Pacific one month after it was chartered. Pacific provided the West Coast with its first medical school in 1858 which later became part of Stanford and today is California Pacific Medical Center. Folding trade card 2.5 x 3.75 inches with views of the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and the attached hospital on the front and back and text inside. Light soiling; very good. The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was "staffed by volunteers and provided relief for Union troops on their way to or returning from battlefields in the South. Its services included warm meals temporary housing medical services and washing facilities. From its opening on May 27 1861 to its closing on December 1 1865 over 800000 men were assisted in this saloon and served over 1025000 meals" Smithsonian. This card was made specifically for the 50th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers who spent December 20th 1862 to January 7th 1863 in Philadelphia before departing by sea for duty in the Port Hudson Campaign in Louisiana. The unit's regimental historian later noted that the regiment "received every attention and the most generous hospitality" at both the Union Saloon and the nearby Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and concluded that "words can hardly express the kindness lavished upon the soldiers by the people of this patriotic city during the war." The interior of the card welcomes the regiment includes a roster of the field staff and line officers present in Philadelphia and provides a list of places of interest that soldiers might wish to visit while in the city. A complete uncut sheet dating from the early 1840s from the second issue of stock to build a Mormon-sponsored hotel in Nauvoo Illinois. It should be noted that Joseph Smith placed the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon in the cornerstone of the building in 1841. Construction was stopped in 1844 in order to concentrate on building Nauvoo Temple. Condition: This example is well centered with above average margins on all four sides. There are two pin holes in the margins that might very well be guide marks. The corners appear sharp but we do notice two minor distractions in the margins of the $50 note. Contains a b/w half-tone photographic image of all local post office branches. 10" x 6-1/2" <br/><br/>Contains information on stations rates regulations arrival times foreign mail lists of offices in California Arizona and Oregon with the publication's stated objective being "to furnish accurate and reliable information upon all matters relating to the Postal Service. . it is believed that a publication of this kind will recommend itself to the business community of San Francisco and the Pacific Coast and that its usefulness and reliability will make it invaluable to all who use the mails." <br /> <br />Research suggests this "annual" only published for 4 years ending with the 1894 "Souvenir" edition. All issues rare recorded by OCLC in only a handful of copies with this 1893 showing just 2 holdings. <br /> <br />As the publisher stated an "invaluable" resource for information regarding San Francisco of the early 1890s.
