1638022099Cambridge: Thomas Buck and Roger Daniel 1638. . Your chance to own a complete Bible apart from one leaf printed only 27 years after the King James Version first came out - a huge one 15 inches tall similar to the pictures you may have seen of original 1611 editions. Hinges and extremities have wear and tear and clasps are missing. Early and late pages have furrows perhaps suggesting moisture issues long ago. A few small holes to pages appear to have been caused by rust and therefore presumably contamination of the paper by specks of ferrous metal. There are no extra materials apart from the translators' addresses to King James and to the reader at the front and the Apocrypha located between the Old and New Testaments. No endpapers - inside of front cover has old stamps of Thomas Garbutt Linen and Woollen Draper Barnard Castle likely from 100 or more years ago. The date of 1638 which is printed on the NT title page has also been added in an old but plain style in black pen at the bottom of the illustrated main title page which is a bit worn and grubby. Page 611-612 middle of Hosea is missing seeming at first glance not to have been present but in fact some tiny fragments do appear at the spine. The last page of text is dilapidated but the text of it seems near complete. Some old repairs have been made to borders of pages by pasting on paper which mostly seems of a similar nature to the original and in general when doing this care seems to have been taken not to obscure the text. The exterior is not elaborate but has a 3 inch long rhombus shaped area of gilt decoration to the middle of each of the two boards; there is no lettering or decoration to the spine. There are pictorial drop initials at the beginning of each book of the Bible and Apocrypha. This specific printing is said to have remained the standard text until the printing of Dr Paris' Cambridge edition of 1762. Leather. Average. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Translated into English the "Historie of the Councel of Trent" chronicles the great Council that formed the modern Catholic Church. The Council of Trent played an important part in determining the outcome of the Counter-Reformation. Called for by Pope Paul Ill the Council was finally disbanded in 1563; although it had a life span of 18 years it was only engaged in talks for four and a half years. The Pope did not attend the meetings of the Council and he took no formal part in it however his legates had to ensure that the popes views would always be put forward in order that there was no danger of the Council being superior to the Pope.The Council was called to examine doctrine and reform. Charles V had wanted abuses looked at first in an attempt to please the Protestants and hopefully tempt them back to the church. Once they were back they could look at doctrine. Paul III did not want this as reforms could financially damage him and concessions could diminish his authority. The result was that two separate sections dealt with reform and doctrine simultaneously. The Council of Trent did mark a turning-point in the history of the Catholic Church as it gave Catholics a certainty about their own beliefs and practices that had been lacking and offered a firm base on which the spiritual life of the Catholic world could be reconstructed. This is a reissue of the 1611 first edition with the date to the title page altered accordingly ESTC No. S122020. While the text starts on p. 151 this book is complete in its own right: conceived as a companion volume to Speed's grand atlas "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" and the pagination continues from that work. Fully collated includes the errata leaf to the rear often lacking the scarce "Proeme" author's preface; it is only the front and rear blanks not present. There are several errors with the pagination e.g. pp. 804 & 805 are numbered 796 & 797; Leaf 802 is misnumbered as leaf 801. Collation: frontispiece portrait later - dated July 28 1629; dedication page to the most high and most potent monarch James of Great Britaine.; The Contents 3 pages; The Proeme To the Learned and Lovers of Great Britaines Glory. pp. 151-154; main text pp. 155-894 beginning at Chap. 1. Numerous engravings in the text by Christoph Schweitzer including coins seals people head and tail-pieces. Contemporary or later half-calf binding with red title label to the spine. Binding worn and rubbed with both boards detached. Contents generally very good first few leaves detached pages generally clean title page laid-down with several chips as shown in photographs this and the later frontispiece plate dust marked. Provenance: with the Baptist College Library Bristol bookplate and that of "A. Gifford of the Museum" Dr Andrew Gifford 1700 -1784. A Baptist minister and the first assistant librarian in the British Museum's Department of Manuscripts. He was also the museum's first numismatist in 1756 Early inconspicuous manuscript shelf marks to the first few pages. A good complete copy though ideally requiring rebinding. 1652032849London: John Wright 1652 A good copy of the 'Third Impression much Augmented' in full leather binding with new spine with raised bands and title label and contemporary boards. Blith 1604-1654 was known as a writer on husbandry. He was a supporter of Cromwell as the decorative title page with the motto 'Vive La Re Publick.' demonstrates. The book sets out and promotes improvements in husbandry and was suppressed after the Restoration in 1660. The binding is sound and clean. There is a lot of wear and leather loss at the corners. The marbled endpapers look to have had repair and are probably predate the binding work. The contents have toning and there has been some close trimming to margins notable in the epistles section at the beginning where page titles are missing but there is no loss to text. There is the signature of Philip Styles to the initial blank and a signature of Tho Wilkins 1683 to the recto of the decorative title - possibly although could be another Wilkins repeated at the side of the title page. Contents: decorative title; letterpress title blank verso; dedication 12pp; Various epistles 30pp; Poems 3 pp; errata 1p; text pp 1-262 with one diagram in the text 2 folding and 2 single plates; finis with signature of Tho W; appendix 8pp; table 10pp; finis. Extra leaves have been inserted in some places on instruction: between 230 and 231 and 248 and 249. A leaf has been added between 256 and 261 - on instruction and the ties work from 256 to the new leaf and to 262 There are some mispaginations with no loss of text: 22-73-24; 228-226-230; 235-234-235-238; 264-752-258. There is occasional staining and there is a little tearing in the gutter of the final leaves of the table. Occasional light annotation and underlining - most in pencil. Book size: 19 cms x 14 cms. Contemporary quarter-brown suede over terracotta cloth boards gilt lettering to the spine red speckeld foredges new endpapers. Light rubbing to the suede leather hint of sunning to the front board else extremities remain in near fine condition. Contents remarkably well-preserved indicating only a touch of slight foxing chiefly confined to the preliminary pages otherwise without blemish markings or notations. Overall very good. The British Library in their catalogued entry notes the presence of two variants of the imprint 'The first line of the imprint has "And Sold". The Revolution would see the passage of the landmark Bill of Rights of 1689 ensured the exclusion of Catholics from the English throne severely curtailed the monarch's power and witnessed the effective establishment of a constitutional monarchy thereby ensuring the supremacy of Parliament. It further led to the Act of Toleration of 1689 granting toleration to "Nonconformist Protestants" but excluding Catholics whose emancipation would be delayed for a further 140 years. The present volume deals chiefly with Parliament's resolution relating to whether James had forfeited or abdicated the throne by virtue of his having discarded the "Great Seal of the Realm" into the River Thames prior to fleeing for France his subsequent capture at Kent and later exile under the protection of Louis XIV of France. Ultimately Parliament declared that: "King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between king and people and by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom has abdicated the government and that the throne is thereby vacant." 1648032258At the Sun over against St Dunstan's Church in Fleetstreet: Printed by William Wilson for Abel Roper 1648 A fair copy of an extremely scarce work. Thomas Overbury 1581-1613 is best known for the scandal surrounding his death by poisoning in the Tower and the trial that followed it some 2 years later. He studied Law in 1598 was knighted in 1608 and was known as a writer and poet. His account of the arraignment and trial of Raleigh is assumed to be written as an eye-witness. Raleigh was tried in 1603 and convicted of treason. His sentence of death was commuted to imprisonment and he was later briefly released before being imprisoned and retried in 1618. This trial reinstated his death sentence albeit by less gruesome means. The book contains Overbury's account of the first trial; an account of the second trial no author named; and Raleigh's letters to the King and to his wife before his death. The binding is more recent full panelled calf with title label to spine matching a contemporary design. There is a bookplate of Col William Allen Potter to the front pastedown. Col Potter was a High Sherriff of Nottinghamshire and President of the Thoroton Society. Newer endpapers and 2 initial and final blanks have been added. Contents: title page; blank text with decorative headpiece and initial capital pp 1-25; proceedings against Sir Walter R 1618 pp 26-34; Letter to the King pp 35/6; Letter to his Wife 37/8; Finis. The binding is in fine condition. The contents are fragile: the paper is very browned at points and the side margins have been reinforced probably when the book was rebound. It has also been trimmed at both top and bottom. P 7 has a couple of small holes next to the side margin and P 9 is particularly browned. Small parts of text are affected but the text can be read. Silvestro Valiero Or Valier Venice 28 March 1630 - Venice 7 July 1700 Was The 109Th Doge Of Venice Reigning From His Election On 25 February 1694 Until His Death Six Years Later. The Morean War Between The Republic Of Venice And The Ottoman Empire Which Had Been Ongoing Since 1684 Came To An End During Valiero's Reign As Doge In January 1699. He Was The Son Of Bertuccio Valiero Who Had Served As Doge From 1656 To 1658. Venice's War With The Ottoman Empire - The Morean War - Was Only One Part Of The Ottoman Empire's Struggle Against The Holy League Of 1684. On 11 September 1697 Ottoman Forces Were Defeated By Troops Of The Holy Roman Empire And The Kingdom Of Hungary At The Battle Of Zenta. This Decisive Battle Led To The Ottoman Empire's Determination To End The Great Turkish War And Peace Negotiations Began At Sremski Karlovci. These Negotiations Eventually Produced The Treaty Of Karlowitz Signed On 26 January 1699 And Ending The Great Turkish War Including The Morean War. Under The Treaty Venice Received The Morea Aegina Lefkada And Zakynthos Zante. Most Venetians Felt They Gained Far Too Little Territory To Compensate For The Huge Loss Of Life And Expense Of The Wars With The Ottoman Empire.
