181032820428<p>FIRST EDITION of "<b>the first official drill manual for either the American regular or militia artillery</b>" Graves. This manual constrains detailed instructions on procedures in firing and handling artillery and training soldiers in its use.</p><p>"In 1810 a Congressional committee looked into ways of improving the training of the militia. One of the results was the publication by the Senate in December 1810 of a small manual entitled <i>Compendious Exercise for the Garrison and Field Ordnance as Practised in the United States</i>. This 30-page pamphlet pp 31-48 comprise amendments to other military regularions contained drills on the new seacoast carriage designed by the Marquis de Montalembert which were just coming into service and the exercise of 4 and 6-pdr. field pieces and additional comments on the use of the prolonge. The anonymous author or compiler seems to have used Tousard or his French originals for garrison and field artillery drill and added excerpts from Jonathan Williams's translation of Montalembert on the new carriage and Kosciuzko for the manoeuvres of a company of field artillery" Donald E. 1843LD60621843. Half gilt-ruled morocco and cloth "Notes on Artillery / R. M. A. / L. Paget / 1843" stamped in gilt on upper board and spine; 8 x 6.25 inches; pp. 6 297 title-page with hand-drawn and colored vignette two finely drawn folding plates a gun and a boring machine for the preparation of gun barrels plus numerous illustrations in text. An exceptionally fine work by Paget presumably a cadet at the time of writing. Penmanship including handwriting drawings diagrams charts is remarkably careful and detailed even lovely and covers casting detonation hand grenades bridges mortars velocity wheels "nature and application of projectiles" and much much more. Paget later served in India and helped suprress the Great Rebellion of 1857. A book on his Indian experiences written with his wife was published in 1865. <br/><br/> hardcover

Also includes original typed orders from General Butler etc. Includes orders received by the unit from January 16 1862 through July 14 1864. Much of this period the battery was assigned to Louisiana Mississippi the Gulf of Mexico. <br> The battery was attached to 3rd Brigade Department of the Gulf until September 1862. It was attached to Weitzel's Reserve Brigade Department of the Gulf until January 1863. It was attached to Artillery 1st Division XIX Corps Department of the Gulf until January 1864 and the 2nd Division until April 1864. It then served at Camp Barry Defenses of Washington XXII Corps until July 1864. <br> The Battery notably served in the following engagements: Siege of Port Hudson; Battle of Fort Stevens; Third Battle of Winchester; Battle of Fisher's Hill; Battle of Cedar Creek. 1st Maine Light Artillery; Union Army hardcover

Numerous black and white full and half page illustrations throughout text plus a folding map. A few pages towards the back half have slight rippling from moisture. Various book ads published by Remington & Co. Ltd on last pages of book. Some faint marks on a few pages throughout book. Good to very good copy. Thomas bland Strange aka "gunner jingo" was a British solider who during the North-West Rebellion in in 1885 was noted in his service in the Canadian militia. During this time he was a retired major-general and lived near Modern Day Calgary. This copy has been restored and in fair condition only. Original cloth spine laid back down onto newer cloth. Cream paper end sheets added front and in back covering the priginal floral end sheets. The original front blank end sheet with the previous owner inscription is vertically split on the paper and detached. Cracks in the gutter with some pages starting to loosen. Text block mostly secure Several upper page corner tips are chipped. A bit of light soil in the gutters of a few pages. The folding map "Sketch of the Battlefield of Ocean Pond 1864" is complete but is split at the folds with closed tears to the brittle paper fair only. Fair condition only. <br /> <br /> An association copy. Signature of "W. J. Hord" located on the front detached blank end sheet. A label on the front paste down reads - "Medical Director Wm. T. Hord U.S. Naval Asylum Philadelphia Pa." Beneath his signature is a note - "see page 150." There is also a later photograph portrait of William Taliaferro Hord removed from some other book and placed inside. On pages 150-154 is correspondence from Jno. F. Wheaton to the author Colonel Charles C. Jones Jr. titled "Head Quarters Chatham Artillery Advanced Lines James Island July 20th 1863." Wheaton summarized the action that took place on July 16 17 at Secessionville regarding an attack on Union gunboats. One of the gunboats was named "The Pawnee". William Hord the previous owner was on the Pawnee and writes in the right margin on page 151: "The "Pawnee" was struck fifty odd times but only our men were killed & about a dozen wounded - W T Hord." There is another old ink note which appears to be written in another hand stating - "Medical Director Wm. T. Hord participated in this engagement." An extract taken from Find A Grave dot com:<br /> <br /> Biography of William Taliaferro Hord<br /> authored by his son Reverend Arnold Harris Hord 1913<br /> <br /> William Taliaferro Hord to whom this biography is dedicated was born March 31832. He was the son of Judge Francis Triplett Hord 1797-1869 the grandson of Captain Elias Hord 1773-1821 an officer in the War of 1812 the great grandson of Jesse Hord 1749-1814 and the great great grandfather of Thomas Hord I 1701-1766. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1853: entered the United States Navy as Assistant Surgeon in 1854: went to the Mediterranean and served on the frigate "Saranac" visiting Smyrna Constantinople and the Black Sea during the Crimean War. He was promoted to Past Assistant Surgeon April 1859 and was attached to various vessels until the Civil War when he was order home from the Pacific Squadron and commissioned as Surgeon in August of 1861. <br /> <br /> He was a Volunteer Aide on the staff of General William Nelson from the battle of Pittsburg Landing to the evacuation of the Corinth Mississippi by General Beauregard. He served also on the steam sloop "Pawnee" of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and participated in several engagements while attached to this vessel. During the year 1863 the "Pawnee" was severely damaged by an explosion of a torpedo. He was detached from the "Pawnee" and ordered to the "Wabash" August 101863 and while on this vessel participated in all operations against Charleston under General Gilmore and Admirals Dupont and Dahlgren. On August 31 1864 he was placed in command of the Medical Headquarters of Mississippi fleet at Mound City Illinois. On November 8 1865 he was ordered to the "U.S.S. Monongahela" and was wrecked November 181867 in the famous earthquake and tidal wave at Santa Croix West Indies the "Monongahela" being almost entirely destroyed. Joel Munsell hardcover

Spine ends chipped top hinge weak edges rubbed endpapers browned light foxing. This work was originally published in 1851 and followed with a second edition in 1862. The third edition contains a seven page addendum on the "Service of a 15-inch gun mounted on a centre-pintle iron carriage" that appears to have been omitted from the previous edition. The 1863 edition also appears to have been published hastily as the added chapter on the 15-inch gun is not listed in the table of contents. Also the spine on the volume is still dated 1862. This work was also reissued by the Confederate States in 1861 and 1862. The illustrations were engraved by D. McClelland after sketches by Lieutenant R.H. A very good copy of this rare privately issued first edition. Using Percy Shelley's Prometheus Unbound as his inspiration Abbott's epic poem is set after the downfall of the rebel god and centres on his daughter Indra destined to one day rule the world. Rare. No copies of this first edition located on Worldcat. ------ General Sir James Abbott KCB 12 March 1807 - 6 October 1896 was a Bengal Army officer and colonial administrator. The Pakistani city of Abbottabad as well as the district and subdistrict is named after him. The city itself was founded by him in January 1853 and later grew from a small military outpost to a hub of trade. The people of Abbottabad have rejected various proposals to rename the city. A portrait of James Abbott dressed as an Afghan noble and relating to his Central Asian journey was painted in watercolour in 1841 by B.
