Overall condition fair or better for newsprint. This issue includes substantial Civil War coverage. Most of the front page is dedicated to the war including coverage of the Battle of Cedar Creek the war in Missouri the war in Tennessee and information about General Sherman's activities. An article "From the South" provides some additional war coverage on a subsequent page.</p>

186525960Washington DC: Government Printing Office. Fair. 1865. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket as issued heavily worn including exposure of boards at all corners but binding is intact; foxing/discoloration to endpapers and early pages; ex-private library with label of W.H. Edwards Downers Grove Illinois on front pastedown. The official Congressional report on one of the major debacles of the Civil War known historically as the Battle of the Crater. An early engagement in the Union Army's siege of Petersburg Virginia this event involved the detonation of 8000 pounds of gunpowder packed into a mine shaft that had been dug by Union troops underneath a Confederate fortification. The idea was to blow a big hole in the enemy's defensive line through which the troops were to then charge overwhelming the enemy; however things went badly almost from the get-go when the 500-foot fuse fizzled out and some poor schmuck was ordered to crawl into the tunnel and re-light it. The explosion was eventually achieved and a gigantic crater was created and nearly 300 Confederate soldiers instantly killed but almost everything thereafter went wrong and in the end both sides suffered massive casualties about 850 men killed and a couple of thousand wounded and the unsuccessful assault instead of bringing a quick end to the siege as its planners had hoped was merely the precursor to another eight months of brutal trench warfare. General Ulyssses S. Grant called the battle "the saddest affair I have witnessed in this war" and part of the aftermath was the Congressional investigation which resulted in this very report which includes personal testimony and statements from many of those involved as well as numerous supporting documents. The two generals most directly responsible -- Gen. Ambrose Burnside and Gen. George Meade -- both testified at length and others interrogated by the Commitee included Lt. Col. Henry Pleasants the engineer who came up with the exploding-mine scheme in the first place Brig. Gen. Edward Ferrero commander of a division of African-American troops which suffered heavy casualties in the battle and U.S. Grant himself. This copy bears a five-line inscription on the second front endpaper see scanned image accompanying this listing but all I can make anything out of is the third line: "with the compliments of." I doubt that the signature is authorial -- since there was no author per se for this Congressional report -- but it's possible there may be some historical or associational significance to the inscription and/or signature a puzzlement which I will leave to the eventual purchaser to work out. The book's one-time owner W.H. Edwards was a businessman and bank president in Downers Grove Ill. the latter position assumed in 1898 but the inscribee's name does not resemble "Edwards" at all so I assume he was not the book's first owner. . Alger was Secretary of War during the Spanish American War. Russell Alexander Alger February 27 1836 – January 24 1907 was a Governor and U.S. Senator from the state of Michigan and also U.S. Secretary of War during the Presidential administration of William McKinley. He was supposedly a distant relation of Horatio Alger; although Russell Alger lived his own "rags-to-riches" success tale eventually becoming a financier lumber baron railroad owner and government official in several high offices. unknown

This revised edition with illustrations and appendix just shows the copyright date of 1888 but was printed some time later. Grigsby 1845-1917 wrote of his experiences during the Civil War including Andersonville and Florence prisons. Red cloth with gold titles and a gold stamped illustration of 2 figures at campfire on front board. Spine slightly faded and light wear at corners and spine tips. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. <br/><br/> hardcover
1861040915Chapel Hill: Published by John B. Neathery 1861. Second American Edition . Soft cover. Good. 12mo. 34 pages. Soft cover bound in pale green wrappers. The wrappers generally shows light to moderate wear but there is some abrasion or chipping at the top of the spine with some separtion. Text is generally clean. Nice early Confederate Imprint from North Carolina. Housed in a removable plastic sleeve with a board backing. William Hooper 1792-1876 was a teacher and pastor from Hillsborough N.C. His father William Hooper Sr. was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The younger Hooper entered the University of North Carolina's prep school in 1804 and he received his B.A. in 1809 and his M.A. in 1812. He went on to study at Princeton. He had started tutoring at UNC in 1810 and he continued to teach in various capacities until 1837. In this pamphlet Hooper relates many memories of his early days in Chapel Hill and this was one of the sources liberally used by Kemp Plummer Battle in his history of the University. Scarce.
