Winfield Scott detailing the actions of his brigade during the battle of Cerro Gordo 18 April 1847. Cerro Gordo was situated astride a mountain pass en route to Mexico City and was a natural position from which to block the American advance from Vera Cruz. Pillow's command was charged with creating a diversion in front of the Mexican line of entrenchments defended by artillery and infantry armed with muskets as the bulk of Scott's army swung around the Mexican flank and rear.
