An invaluable and detailed history of the Spruce Production Division -- a unit of the Army Signal Corps’ Aviation Section -- which was established to guarantee Sitka Spruce supplies for aviation during World War I. Although the headquarters was in Portland OR the main operations center was at the Vancouver Barracks in Vancouver WA establishing the largest spruce sawmill in the world. The Division established over 60 military logging camps throughout the Pacific Northwest mostly near existing privately owned sawmills operated under the direction of the Army. The Division was able to produce nearly 150000000 board feet in 18 months. The photo illustrations show the building of logging railroad trestle bridges road building ferry boats to transfer cut-up mills many of the sawmills set up in Coos Bay Clatsop Yaquina Bay Grays Harbor Willapa Bay and more.
