Image measures approx. 15.5 inches by 21.25 inches; unframed but mounted on fiberboard dark "tidal stain" at lower left margin maskable with matting. <br/><br/>Perhaps the most vivid illustrations created of 1860 Chicago were published by Jevne and Almini in France. Raoul Varin of Paris France re-created the original paintings in the mid-1920s. "The differences between Mr. Varin's paintings and the original prints were subtle. He engraved a variety of signed limited edition numbered prints . in the 1920s and 1930s. They were published by A Ackermann & Son . His views took a historical perspective . often based on extant classical works." Only 100 signed prints of the finished work were published. This is apparently a Proof State of the print and thus unnumbered but it is signed by Varin in pencil in the lower right corner. . A. Ackermann & Son Inc unknown
1904216112London.: George Philip & Son. 1904-1905. Colour folding map centred on the Bohai Sea about the ongoing Russo-Japanese War. Divided into 18 panels measuring 56 x 71cm when open folds into card covers with "A Map of the Country between Pekin and Taku" printed in red inside the upper cover covers measure 20.5 x 14cm. Map little foxed though not affecting image few small holes at folds covers worn and chipped particularly at extremities spine pf cover strengthened with archival tape overall in good condition. A detailed map of China's northeast extending from Nanjing and Shanghai in the south to Changchun in the north showing the European concessions of Port Arthur Weihaiwei and Qingdao. The Korean peninsula is also shown. Placenames are marked as well as road and rail links. Curiously although the South Manchuria Railway between Harbin and Port Arthur had been fully completed by the time of the war's outbreak and publication of this map the line north of Kaiyuan appears to be marked as incomplete perhaps indicating an asymmetric spread of knowledge regarding the railway's progress among British cartographers. <br> <br>Also shown are inset maps of central Beijing the area around Guangzhou as well as the Southeast of England to the same scale for comparison. Original Vintage Map. 29 x 42 inch original vintage map produced by the U.S. Military titled "Hell on Wheels War Against the Axis 1942-1943-1944-1945" detailing the route and battles of the 2nd Armored Division as they worked their way from France through Belgium and into Germany in World War II. This is the larger version of a map which was issued the previous year. The map shows general handling wear and some edge chipping. There is a small mostly closed tear in the lower left quadrant. Included with the map is the original heavy mailing tube which shows it was sent by a Private Anderson APO New York to his family in Quinnimont Fayette County West Virginia. The map appears to be scarce in the trade with only 1 original currently listed for sale online vialibri. An example is listed and shown at David Rumsey's map website. We are offering this vintage World War II map with its original mailing tube. OCLC offers this note: "Shows route of 2nd Armored Division from Littry France to Gutergluck Germany with historical notes for selected locations. Includes brief history of the 2nd Armored Division. Name rank and organization of previous owner on front cover. Page 1 bound with short right edge. This manual was published for the information and guidance of the using arms and services. In addition to a description of the 105--mm howitzer materiel M2 this manual contains technical information required for the identification use and care of the materiel. Disassembly assembly and such repairs as may be handled by using arms personnel will be undertaken only under the supervision of an officer or the chief mechanic. During the Second World War U.S. artillery regiments consisted of an HQ detachment one 155 mm artillery battalion and three 105 mm artillery battalions. Both the 155 mm and 105 mm battalions had twelve guns each divided into three batteries of four guns. The 105 mm M101A1 howitzer previously designated M2A1 was an artillery piece developed and used by the United States. It was the standard U.S. light field howitzer in World War II and saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters. Entering production in 1941 it quickly gained a reputation for accuracy and a powerful punch. The M101A1 fired 105 mm 4.1 in high explosive HE semi-fixed ammunition and had a range of 12330 yards making it suitable for supporting infantry. All of these qualities of the weapon along with its widespread production led to its adoption by many countries after the war. First edition of this fascinating and well-illustrated graphic novel regimental history executed by the artist while serving with the 3rd Brigade 25th Infantry Division and filled with drawings depicting the life of a doughboy fighting the Japanese across Luzon. The book covers the 35th “Cacti†27th “Wolfhounds†and 161st Infantry Regiments the famous Battle of Balete Pass offering an essential first-hand visual record while they set the combat record of 165 consecutive days. The record would not be broken until later when the 3rd Brigade of the 25th Division went 235 consecutive days in combat operations during the Vietnam War in 1966. Rutherfoord 1919-2001 was a commercial artist from Roanoke VA who served from 1942-1946 in the 25th Infantry Division and later as commercial artist in New York who also illustrated a number of titles in the popular Little Golden Books series as well as later a successful painting career in and around Roanoke. 25th Infantry Division, hardcover

One soldier on a white horse is carrying the American Flag. The view also shows other soldiers and tents in the background. From wikipedia: <br /> <br /> The Mexican Border War13 or the Border Campaign14 refers to the military engagements which took place in the Mexico–United States border region of North America during the Mexican Revolution. The war's time period encompassed World War I during which Germany attempted to have Mexico attack the United States and engaged in hostilities against American forces there itself. The Border War was the fifth and latest major conflict fought on American soil where its predecessors were the American Revolutionary War War of 1812 Mexican–American War 1846–1848 and the American Civil War. The end of the Mexican Revolution on 1 December 1920 marked the close of the American Frontier. The Bandit War15 in Texas was part of the Border War. From the beginning of the Mexican Revolution in 1910 the United States Army was stationed in force along the border and on several occasions fought with Mexican rebels or federals. The height of the conflict came in 1916 when revolutionary Pancho Villa attacked the American border town of Columbus New Mexico. In response the United States Army under the direction of General John J. Pershing launched an expedition into northern Mexico to find and capture Villa. Although Villa was not captured the US Army found and engaged the Villista rebels killing Villa's two top lieutenants. The revolutionary himself escaped and the American army returned to the United States in January 1917. Conflict at the border continued however and the United States launched several additional though smaller operations into Mexican territory until after the American victory in the Battle of Ambos Nogales in August 1918 leading to the establishment of a permanent border wall.16 Conflict was not only subject to Villistas and Americans; Maderistas Carrancistas Constitutionalistas and Germans also engaged in battle with American forces during this period. n.p. unknown

Pages 64-119 are blank. Green cloth covered boards with leather corners and edges. No spine. Gilt stamp title "News Cuttings" stamped on the front cover. Outer hinges are cracked. Boards are edge worn. Brittle newspaper clippings have toning edge wear tears splits and are flaking. Scattered glue stains to several pages. <br /> <br /> The news articles are chronologically pasted down or tipped in. All appear to be from the London Times newspaper. The first articles are dated August 1 1914 and the last article is dated October 1 1914. Some pencil dates and page numbers written in the upper corners. Provenance unknown. A partial cut piece of cardboard with an inscription written on one side not legible and the name of "A Martin-Leake" written on the other side was found inside the Scrapbook. Many of the articles are folded over and several have map illustrations. World War I officially started July 28 1914. These articles provide a first hand daily report of the early stages of World War I in Europe. A potential association with the scrapbook to "A Martin-Leake" whose name was found inside. From wikipedia: Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Martin-Leake VC & Bar VD 4 April 1874 – 22 June 1953 was a British physician officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps and a double recipient of the Victoria Cross VC the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Included with the two page letter is a silver gelatin photograph portrait approx. 5" x 3.5" of a well groomed Davis. Paper and photograph in very good condition. <br /> <br /> Richard Harding Davis was a writer journalist and World War I correspondent. He was friends with Theodore Roosevelt. This letter was written less than 1 year before his death from heart attack at his home in Mount Kisco New York at the age of 51. Transcribed letter reads:<br /> <br /> Dear Johnstone<br /> <br /> As the man says in the play to the girl who wants to marry her "Don't ask me for one thing I can't give you." I would do anything for you but write about something I don't know anything about. Besides even if I studied the subject and "read up" the material you threaten to send me what I would write in that way would do none of us any good. Please wait until we are all once more at "the front" and I can see the Red Cross people at work and then I shall only be too glad to give them the thanks and praise we owe them.<br /> <br /> I hope you are feeling fine and daisy and I send you my best wishes always.<br /> <br /> Sincerely yours <br /> <br /> Richard Harding Davis.
