Uneven right edge but still very good condition.<br/> <br/> George Wilson Booth was a Confederate soldier who served under Stonewall Jackson and other prominent generals. George W. Booth was a teenager 17 years old and a member of the Maryland militia at the time of the 1861 Baltimore riot before joining the Confederacy. He served for four years in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.He fought in major battles including both Manassas battles the Peninsula campaign and the Valley campaign.He served under multiple generals including Jackson "Grumble" Jones Dick Ewell Jubal Early and John Imboden.He was wounded at Greenland Gap and later promoted to Captain. After the war he wrote his "Personal reminiscences of a Maryland soldier in the war".<br/> <br/> unknown

If you are to remain in London and would like to bring your family over in that case I shall be happy to pay the expenses of the journey." Evenly toned with four small tape repairs on the folds on the back. Very good- condition.<br/> <br/> Son of the founder of the New York Herald. He is best remembered for sponsoring Henry Morton Stanley's trip to Africa to find David Livingston financing the whole endeavor for exclusive dispatches from the Congo. As a sportsman Bennett is credited with organizing the first tennis match in the United States. As a businessman he partnered with Jay Gould and co-founded the Commercial Cable Company.<br/> <br/> unknown

Wards studio in part: "Yes! - I shall be not only very happy but very proud to sit to Mr. Ward for my portrait for you & take it as an immense compliment into the bargain. Mr. Ward & myself will be able to arrange about the sittings - when the time arrives - without much difficulty. Forgive me for not writing sooner." This letter was addressed to Sir Henry Lucy a patron of the arts who mounted the letter in a scrap book and added a postscript in the left margin: "The portrait was painted and hung for years in our dining room." Gently faded at the edges with light spotting in the margins; still in very good condition overall.<br/> <br/> English illustrator and political cartoonist who was prominent in the second half of the 19th century. He was the illustrator for "Alice in Wonderland" and is best remembered as the principle political cartoonist for "Punch" magazine for over 50 years.<br/> <br/> unknown

Savage" below the image on the mount in purple ink "M.J. Savage" and again on the back "M.J. Savage - May 24th '95." An exceptional item that is in fine condition. Note: Elmer Chickering 1857 - 1915 was a photographer who specialized in celebrity portraits in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.<br/> <br/> American Unitarian Minister who was an early advocate of Darwinian Evolutionistic Optimism and Social Reform and supported the Theory of Evolution through his numerous sermons and church teachings.<br/> <br/> unknown

Fine. 12mo 7 3/4 x 5 1/4 in.192 x 133 mm 225 pp. 1898 Riviere and Son binding in red crushed morocco Art Nouveau leaf-spray devices gilt to spine and covers gilt fillets on turn-ins and binder's mark which reads "R. Riviere & Son for L.S. Montagu 1898" t.e.g others untrimmed marbled endpapers original wrappers bound in at rear. A beautifully-bound first edition of the classic French play about the large-nosed Cyrano obliged to help another more handsome man woo the beautiful Roxanne who Cyrano already loves. Rostand's play stages the tragic complicity between two halves of man puts into question the existence of justice or happy love in this world but ends with the evidence of hope: in the guise of Christian it is the soul of Cyrano that Roxanne loved. This drama in five acts saw its first production on December 27th 1897 with the leading role played by Constant Coquelin who went on to play the role 410 times and toured the play in North America. The dedication of this book reads " C'est à l'âme de CYRANO que je voulais dédier ce poème. Mais puisqu'elle a passé en vous COQUELIN c'est à cous que le dédie. E. R." I wanted to dedicate this poem to the soul of CYRANO. Since that soul has passed through you COQUELIN I dedicated to you. E.R. Rostand was elected to the prestigious Académie Française the following year making him the youngest member to date at age 31. <br /> Cyrano has been performed all over the world and has seen many cinematic adaptations including the 1950 production starring Jose Ferrer winner of the 1950 Oscar for the Best Actor. <br /> <br /> The binder's mark indicates that this copy prepared in London specifically for the library of L.
