181527901London: The Times 1815. This is an early reproduction of the famous Times 'Waterloo Edition' which ran to three printings as news of the battle victory came in on June 22 1815. There are four leaves folded and creased as illustrated with some browning and with small tears at the folds. The Times website notes the marks that authenticate an original printing and adds that there have been several commemorative printings. My copy is not an original but it is certainly an early copy. It came to me as part of a collection that included early 19th century Irish provincial newspapers so I would guess it is from the mid-19thC. Some clues: it does not have the 'Printed and published at'.etc Also the top of Page three reads 'Tuesday June 22 1815' instead of Thursday. The dimensions of the pages are 17.5 by 11 inches. Good/No Jacket. The Times, unknown

Publisher's black cloth stamped in yellow and red designed by Will Bradley 1868-1962. Octavo. Map frontispiece. Title-page printed in black and red. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. Very minor wear to crown and tail of spine. The occasional minor stain. Contemporary ink signature on front flyleaf. A very good bright copy. Stanley Waterloo 1846-1913 was a Chicago-born newspaper man editor and author. The present work is about Ab a young Stone Age boy and his journey to manhood. During the course of the novel he catches a baby rhinoceros with his friend Oak and joins the men in his tribe on a hunt. After both he and his friend become enamored with Lightfoot a young woman they fight over her which ends in his friend's death. Though burdened with guilt Ab goes on to become the leader of his tribe. Waterloo's novel was based on the theory that there was not a sharp division between the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods and that mankind learned to make weapons naturally and gradually.
Way and Williams, hardcover

Mercer's ‘Journal’ is an important source for historians of the Waterloo campaign as well as a detailed description of the landscape and people of Belgium and France in the early 19th century. It is one of the few accounts of the period written by an artillery officer. Mercer’s journals were kept throughout the campaign of 1815 but were not published until 1870 after his death. The work was compiled and written in its finished form some 30 years earlier from the original notes Mercer wrote contemporaneously with additions and verifications from correspondence and other sources. It covers the period from April 1815 to January 1816. Although he eventually rose to the rank of general his fame is as commander of the British G Troop Royal Horse Artillery in the thick of the fighting at the Battle of Waterloo. It is also notable for its lengthy descriptions of the countryside and its people.
In spite of his position with the British Army the work is usually found in 20th Century editions in French. Its historical value in the English-speaking nations was largely overlooked till its rediscovery with a Praeger edition in 1970. William Blackwood and Sons hardcover
