The two prints depict scenes from the exercise — one showing the Emperor on horseback observing an attack and the other capturing the final parade. This official souvenir book of the 31st reunion lists the officers of the G.A.R. with their photographs describes various auxiliary units Women’s Relief Corps Daughters of Veterans etc. chronicles the contributions of the state of New York Buffalo and Erie Counties in the war as well as an enumeration of companies by unit type. However about 75% of the booklet is devoted to a description of Buffalo and its attractions with photographs of various buildings businesses street scenes residents parks etc. The encampments began in 1866 one year after the close of the Civil War and this is the 31st consecutive year that it had been held. A wonderfully visual piece. Small gift inscription on rear inside cover a tiny old water stain to bottom edge of some rear pages but not affecting the text or pictures a small crease to bottom edge of front cover else a very good internally clean copy. According to records found on Ancestry.com a James Reynolds enlisted in August of 1862 into the 25th Infantry of Connecticut and mustered in on November 11 of 1862. The entire regiment mustered out in Hartford on August 26th of 1863. The regiment saw action near Baton Rouge and helped carry out the siege of Port Hudson. A fascinating volume of U.S. military history crucial to the volunteers and drafted soliders of the Union Army. The manual instructs the soldiers on how to interpret bugle calls with sheet music printed inside how to engage in combat and on the general rules of conducting war. Spotting to the front board some of the plates with a wrinkle or two the frontispiece partially trimmed resulting in only nine of the ten companies depicted actually present. J.B. Very good. - Three-page letter penned on 3 sides of 2 sheets of approximately 7-1/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide paper which has been tipped onto a slightly larger piece of cream-colored card. Signed "H Percy". Folded twice for mailing. Near fine. <p>Lord Percy writes a friendly letter to Mary Ford. After accepting an invitation from her and commenting on the weather and her case of influenza he comments on the Prussian and Austrian forces crossing into Schleswig. "Oh the poor Danes!!" He devotes the rest of the letter to the case of Lieutenant-Colonel Crawley. Crawley was court-martialed for his role in a bungled court-martial in India in 1862. The deaths of a British soldier and his wife after their release from an Indian prison during that court case created a sensation in Victorian England. Crawley was acquitted in his own trial. His acquittal led the social reformer James Matthew Higgins to write an article for the "Cornhill Magazine" November 1863 disputing the verdict. He published the article under the initials "J.O." He was subsequently rebuked in a letter to The Times signed "Verax".<p> Percy writes: "Mr. Higgins should be told by some lady from whom those things come best that as he is so sore about Verax's letter he may imagine what pain his indignant misinterpretations may have given Crawley & learn to be a little less Venomous.I am surprised at the country being allowed to be burdened with the expense of printing the Crawley ---- as every paper had a very fair report of the same __ for the satisfaction of the --- Fortescue". Dudley Fortescue was a British M.P. who initiated the Parliamentary debate on the death of the British soldier.<p>General Lord Henry Percy VC KCB 1817-1877 was a British army officer who served as a captain and lieutenant-colonel in the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards during the Crimean War of 1854-55. At the battle of Inkerman he won the Victorian Cross the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemywhen though wounded himself he extricated some fifty men who were surrounded and under heavy fire. Outside his military career he was briefly a Conservative Member of Parliament.<p>From the autograph collection of Mrs. Mary Ford of Pencarrow widow of Richard Ford who wrote the popular "Handbook for Travellers in Spain". Grand Army of the Republic volume and an especially choice presentation copy at that: Inner flyleaf is boldly inscribed and signed in brown ink: "Genl Mahlon D Manson / From his Comrade / Nate Kimball / 1869." Nathan Kimball 1822-98 was a brevet major general who served the Union Army with distinction during the Civil War an Indiana politician state legislator and state treasurer as well as that state's first statewide G.A.R. commander. He is listed in a "List of Members of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland" on page 314. Manson 1820-95 was also a Hoosier a brigadier general who also served Indiana in Congress and as lieutenant governor. His tiny 1½" X 1/8" printed "Mahlon D. Butler is writing his daughter Harriet on January 17th 1847. From New Orleans he writes ".the wants of the Army imperatively demand that I shall return immediately. I leave tomorrow in the Steam Ship Alabama for the Army in Mexico. I shall go by Brazos Santiago the Rio Grande Camargo Monterey Mier Seraluo &c." He ads "There are many troops arriving from Penna among them I have met Several from Pittsburgh. They are now all embarking on board of ships provided with three months provisions. Their destination is not known but is supposed to be and Vera Cruz.I think Vera Cruz & the castle at that place will be assailed conjunctively by forces on land & by sea. May the God of battles protect our friends."<br /> <br /> Butler urges his daughter to give his kind regards to friends at her school. After initially closing the letter Butler writes a lengthy post script. New intelligence has been provided ".Genl Scott has returned from Carmgo and the Rio Grande and is now at the Brazos awaiting arrival of the troops that have been and that now being shipped at this place. This confirms the belief that Vera Cruz is his destination and the General's first demonstration will be against the fort and fortifications at that place."<br /> <br /> Butler urges his daughter to look at the map to find Vera Cruz and about the strong fort and castle. writing of strife and battle he writes his daughter "War always produces a wanton waste of blood & treasury - Every victory must have its victims; & contending armies are indiscriminate so there is no knowing who may fall."<br /> <br /> The last page has addresses and the letter is addressed to "Miss H. A B Eaton from Brazos Island is dated December 15th 1847 and is addressed to Major Thos. B Eastland q.m. The document reads "Major - I respectfully require of the Quartermaster's Department the necessary transportation receipts in bulk for the Subs Stores herewith invoiced as required by Par 1088 Army Regulations. - Respectfully Your Obt Servt A B Eaton Capt .sp" The second document signed by Eaton on December 17th 1847 is also addressed to Eastland and has the same exact content as the first letter not a copy as the date is different and the writing has variation. A collection of Thomas B. Eastland's papers is held by the California Historical Society. <br /> <br /> From the Confederate Veteran February 1911 "Eastland Family" "Thomas B. Eastland came to Nashville where he was engaged in business until about 1840 when he went to New Orleans to engage in the cotton brokerage business and where he continued until the breaking out of the Mexican War during which he served under General Zachary Taylor as major." Thomas B. Eastland's diary titled To California Through Texas and Mexico: The Diary of Thomas B. Eastland and Joseph G. Eastland His Son was published by the California Historical Society in 1939 and is 59 pages long.<br /> <br /> From wikipedia: in 1846 ".it Brazos Island was the first military objective of the US Navy in support of General Zachary Taylor's invasion of Mexico. Control over this important seaport was said by Harvard historian Leroy Graf to be the primary reason for the US invasion of Mexico. From Padre Island NS Historic Research Study Chapter 3 "After the outbreak of hostilities Brazos Island became the primary staging area for the continuing campaign. Volunteers from throughout Texas and the Mississippi Valley converged on the Island and headed inland for camps at Point Isabel and along the Rio Grande."<br /> <br /> Amos Beebe Eaton the signer of these documents 1806-1877 was a career officer in the United States Army. He was General Zachary Taylor's Chief Commissary of Subsidence during the Mexican War.
