Discharge papers for Thomas Fulford a private in Company B 64th Regiment Infantry Indiana Volunteers dated Sept. 30 1863 at St. Louis Mo by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In left margin handwritten in red ink "Phthisis-hereditary-developed by exposure. He is unfit for the Invalid Corps". Signed at bottom "By Order of Maj. Gen. Schofield" and then signed "J.K. Hudson" with more writing below illegible. Stamped in red ink "paid by Robert Smith St. Louis Oct. 2 1863 Paymaster U.S.A." Also another stamp faint with just the word Ohio at right side above top fold. Verso bears handwritten "Discharge Certificate of Thomas F. Fulford Late of Co. B 64th Regt. Indiana Vols. Infantry". Private Fulford went on to live to the age of 68 fathering 8 children. At his death in 1899 his obituary referred to him as "well known old soldier of Washington Township". Major General John McAllister Schofield 1831 -1906 held major commands during the Civil War and later served as U.S. Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. A few small closed tears at the folds and upper edge. Quality of the paper and its condition is good. Eli Smith writes to family possibly friends back home:<br /> <br /> "I now take my pen in hand to rite you a few lines to let you know that I am well and in the land of living yet and I hope that these few lines will find you the same. He remarks the weather is very fine and that the "hardes fite that had hear was with the flees thay bite us soo bade that we hent got over it yet." Smith hoping to fight remarks "the ounly fite that I have seen since I have ben gone has ben is the Captain cook and nigar." Smith asks the receiver of the letter to "rite as often as you can." From Military Genealogy Trials - Records indicate Eli Smith from Tioga County enlisted September 18th 1861 as a Private in Company G 45th Pennsylvania Regiment. He was wounded with loss of leg at Cold Harbor June 3 1864 - absent at muster out. unknown

1885461Wahington: U. S Government 1885. Very good but has tear repaired with scotch tape where the map meets the booklet. The Hennepin Canal was designed to connect the Mississippi River to the Illinois River saving 400 miles required to access the natural access to the Illinois River just north of St. Louis at Alton Illinois. The map shows the potential routes of the canal. The actual canal was opened in 1907 just in time for the railroads to functionally supplant the canal's carriage. This map is in very good condition as is accompanied by the original report to Congress. U. S Government unknown

On the front blank end sheet the previous owner Lieutenant O.H. Dockery Jr. 3rd U.S. Infantry stamped his name twice and wrote "Dont Steal this good book of O H Dockery 3rd Inf - USA." Dockery also wrote the same inscription on page 168. His name is stamped on the rear blank end sheet with some hand written "Rules of conduct". Dockery's name is also written on the rear paste down. Lt. Oliver Hart Dockery graduated from North Carolina in 1895 and served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War in 1898. D. Van Nostrand hardcover
