Rusted staples. . 15pp. Illustrated wraps.Camp Merritt was an army base that was activated for use during WWI located in Dumont and Cresskill NY. The booklet features information and images from photographs of the camp buildings various administrative offices money and post exchange tailor shops hospital enlisted men's clubs officer clubs churches recreations/entertainment spaces movie theater library etc. vocational training courses and classrooms telegraph office visitor center soldier quarters and information how to get to the base from surrounding areas such as New York City. The front cover has a blue engraving of a fire place with the following quote engraved on the mantle "We make War Against War". This fire place was actually located in Merritt Hall on the base which was the enlisted men's club. The back cover has the seal of the camp with the caption "Merritt-Men" underneath. Included are several black and white printed photographs of the camp its grounds and buildings as well as a map of the camp itself at the back of the booklet. Camp Merritt would be decommissioned after the war in 1919 and sold to the Harris Brothers Company of Chicago in 1920. Unfortunately the buildings of the camp were destroyed during a series of fires shortly there after. OCLC 4 Mar 2020. Measures 7 1/2" by 4 1/2". <br/><br/>It was one of three camps under the control of the New York Port of Embarkation US Army command that oversaw the movement of US troops and supplies from NY/NJ to overseas destinations. Camp Merritt had the capacity to hold 38000 transient troops. When the troops were ready to be deployed they would march to Old Closter Dock at Alpine Landing and take ferry boats to piers in Hoboken NJ and from there head to Europe and the Western Front. All total of the approximately four million troops sent to Europe in WWI about one million were funneled through Camp Merritt. This booklet was given to troops as they returned from overseas most likely after the war finished in November 1918 and started returning home in 1919. McConnell Printing Company paperback books

This work issued under the auspices of the Quartermaster General contains ten fine chromolithographed plates showing the different uniforms of the Army as dictated by regulations in 1882. It would seem to be the first official such work and may have been prepared by H.A. Ogden whose named appeared on a similar publication noted by Bennett which was published in 1888 with twelve plates. Ogden later produced a much larger work UNIFORM OF THE ARMY OF THE U.S. ILLUSTRATED FROM 1774 TO 1889 which was issued from 1900 to 1907. HOWES R155 "aa." BENNETT p.85 ref. Discharge papers for Thomas Fulford a private in Company B 64th Regiment Infantry Indiana Volunteers dated Sept. 30 1863 at St. Louis Mo by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In left margin handwritten in red ink "Phthisis-hereditary-developed by exposure. He is unfit for the Invalid Corps". Signed at bottom "By Order of Maj. Gen. Schofield" and then signed "J.K. Hudson" with more writing below illegible. Stamped in red ink "paid by Robert Smith St. Louis Oct. 2 1863 Paymaster U.S.A." Also another stamp faint with just the word Ohio at right side above top fold. Verso bears handwritten "Discharge Certificate of Thomas F. Fulford Late of Co. B 64th Regt. Indiana Vols. Infantry". Private Fulford went on to live to the age of 68 fathering 8 children. At his death in 1899 his obituary referred to him as "well known old soldier of Washington Township". Major General John McAllister Schofield 1831 -1906 held major commands during the Civil War and later served as U.S. Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. An interesting unofficial handbill relating to the U.S. Army Quartermaster Department on the eve of the War of 1812 with references to the impending war with Britain Indian business and the Barbary powers. In 1811 Congress introduced "A Bill for the Establishment of a Quarter-Master's Department" which the anonymous author of the present document notes "merges the duties of the superintendent of military stores in the quarter master without naming the former." The author urges Congress to keep separate the military office of the Quartermaster from the civil positions of the Army Purveyor. unknown books

Gen. Charles William Doyle 17701842 ordered this work to be printed.<br>Â Â Â Â Doyle was an Irish-born British lieutenant-colonel who in 1808 was ordered to Portugal to help fight Napoleon in the Peninsular Campaign. He very successfully aided the Spanish army in instilling discipline and organizing light infantry and was made a lieutenant general in the Spanish army. In 1811 Britain ordered him home but when he reached Cadiz Sir Henry Wellesley convinced him to command a camp at which a new army was being organized for action in the south of Spain. Again he was highly successful in his military instruction of new troops and as a result was promoted to full colonel in the British army; he remained in Spain till the end of the war in 1814.<br>Â Â Â Â The present work extracted from the larger one of the same title printed at Madrid by the Imprenta Real in 1808 was clearly printed for the instruction of Doyle's southern army.<br>Â Â Â Â At the rear of the volume are => 30 folding plates setting forth various dispositions and movements of infantry troops; clear careful verbal explanations of these precede them.<br>Â Â Â Â Searches of NUC WorldCat and the CCPBE locate => only three copies worldwide of which only one is in the U.S. West Point.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Contemporary signature of "Velez" on title-page. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Not in Palau. On Doyle see: DNB online. Dark brown speckled calf black gilt-lettered title-label a little chipped to gilt-ruled spine marbled endpapers; binding lightly rubbed.
