AMERICAN IMPRINTS 37593 SABIN 24260: "A political squib against the Democrats." During the War of 1812 a humorous nickname was coined for the U.S. Government with "Uncle Sam" coming to stand for "U.S." According to article by Albert Matthews in the Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society April 1908 vol. XIX pp.21-65 the term was first used in a scattering of newspapers to refer somewhat derisively to custom house officers and later to soldiers by those who opposed the war but was avoided by the 'war hawks.' It's first appearance in book form was the title offered here "a political skit. written partly in Biblical phrase." The nickname stuck becoming part of the lexicon used by later writers including J.K. Paulding Hezekiah Niles Anne Royall David Crockett etc.

Printed by Seth Richards hardcover books
