Davis' work is a revision of the Indian prayer book published in 1815 by the Rev. Eleazar Williams a catechist in Oneida Castle New York. It does not contain the entirety of the prayer book but "the Morning and Evening Service the Litany Catechism some of the collects and the prayers and thanksgivings upon several occasions in the Book of Common Prayer.together with forms of family and private devotion." At the end are four hymns in Oneida without music. The Episcopal Church had a very successful ministry to the Oneida in the 19th century and one of the Episcopal Seminaries Nashotah House was founded in 1842 specifically as a mission to them. California Solomon Wright Jewett It is also inscribed and initialed by Jewett on the recto- "“Interesting enough to be surrounded in a frame and in a glass only think of calling down our friends from Heaven. JWS 1890" Broadside has three horizontal fold-lines and the middle fold has a one inch separation at the right margin old stain to top of page. A fragile and scarce item of Spiritualist Vermont and California interest. No copies located.Solomon Jewett was one of the most earnest and grandiose of all believers and practitioners of Spiritualism in 19th century America. Born and raised in Vermont he became a wealthy sheep farmer in both Vermont and California. After losing his wife of seven years he became interested in Spiritualism. He also traveled extensively in Europe and other places picking up his further beliefs as he went along. Soon enough he was referring to himself as a “Shepherd of Vermont and California†“Indian Healer†“Doctor of Magnetism†and “Medical Doctor.†He soon began to claim that he could channel Washington and Lincoln among many others. "He also associated with and befriended a spirit artist Wella P. Anderson and his wife Lizzie “Pet†Anderson a medium who worked in New York City and Oakland California. Jewett acquired from them eighteen pencil portraits that depict well-known historical and mythical figures spanning many geographical locations and historical times that apparently “visited†the artist under the influence of Jewett’s presence" Henry Sheldon Museum. He assembled a large collection of Spirit art and photographs and that collection remains extant in The Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History. Jewett died in 1905 N.p. unknown

The author Julia Corner is quite clear that a good boy 'is dutiful kind and affectionate; diligent at school attentive at church and gentle and humane to all living things. He is careful with his books and clothes; and he knows they cost money and that money is not obtained without labour.' Of the less than good boys the examples given are of 'The Inattentive Boy' Frank who is lent by the studious James a jigsaw map of England alas when the puzzle is returned James discovers it has lost the counties of Middlesex and Durham. Likewise 'The Covetous Little Boy' Charles becomes jealous when an Ark toy is given to his younger brothers Tom and George. Charles persuades his younger brothers to part with the Ark for some old toys of his own. A parent on discovering this is rather incredulous and takes time to explain how wrong Charles has been. One feels that Charles was not altogether convinced that the exchange should be rescinded. On balance one would not like to be in the company of such excruciatingly good boys for too long as described here! <br /><br />Julia Corner 1798-1875 also known as Miss Corner was a British children's educational writer who created Miss Corner's Historical Library. Corner was born in London in 1798. Her father John Corner was an engraver. She initially wrote novels which she continued after she became associated with a series of history books. In 1840 she published "The History of Spain and Portugal" and the "History of France". The former was criticised by the Church of England Quarterly Review as an "apologist for the Jesuits" although "Miss Julia Corner's" good intentions and the low price of her books was appreciated. These history books eventually covered many countries and built up into what was known as Miss Corner's Historical Library. 'Corner wrote simple stories for children and books for their instruction as well as history books about the ancient Britons Saxons and Normans. She was published by low cost publishers like Henry George Bohn for whom she created books about India and China in the 1850s. Her books about countries Miss Corner's Historical Library would be illustrated and they would include anecdotes tables of historical events maps different aspects of history and questions were raised that related to the text in the style of Richmal Mangnall… Corner also created revised editions of other writer's books including Anne Rodwell's A Child's First Step to the History of England. Her usually conservative books also included plays for children in Dean & Son's series Little Plays for Little People which she advocated for their educational value' see ODNB.<br /><br />The illustrations are by Benjamin Clayton 1809-1883 an Irish artist and engraver who settled in London and probably produced a tremendous amount of unsigned work for juvenile works prints and advertising material and who is better remembered as the father of the writer Ellen Creathorne Clayton. History of the Halifax Printer William Milner: Born to a single mother in Halifax in October 1803 William Milner was apprenticed as a youth to a printer in Hebden Bridge. After a stint as a grocer he began publishing books himself initially using local printers Hartley & Walker or Whitley & Booth. Then he set up his own printing press at Swine Market now upper Crown Street. It was here that he published John Fielden's revolutionary book The Curse of the Factory System in 1836. Moving his business to Upper George Yard Cheapside he began to publish his series called Cottage Library which were said to be the cheapest books in Britain. At one time he was printing 15000 books per day sold at sixpence 2 new pence and 1 shilling 5 new pence each. Cheap books were a rarity before Milner commenced printing. He would sell copies by travelling round the country from a horse-drawn van. And many of his books were exported to distant parts of the British Empire. Milner was a fervent supporter of the Chartists. Wishing to obtain quantities of Feargus O'Connor's Chartist paper confiscated when found by the Authorities Milner worked out an ingenious plan to obtain supplies. Every week copies of the papers were hidden in a coffin in London which was then conveyed north in a hearse smuggling in banned reading material! Milner lived for many years in Rhodes Street where he died in 1850. He married widowed Mrs Mary Sowerby from Bristol taking her two sons into partnership. The business was left to these stepsons in his death; the firm then traded as Milner & Sowerby. It was in 1858 that the company moved to its new premises in Raglan Street designed by local architect Richard Horsfall later Mayor of Halifax. The street off Hanson Lane below the factory is called Milner Street though the sign has disappeared. The new building's opening was marked by an outing for employees to Hardcastle Crags followed a meal at the White Lion Hotel Hebden Bridge. The number of cheap books turned out by this firm was phenomenal. By 1907 245000 copies of the works of Burns had been sold for example. Hundreds of thousands of working people must have benefited from the company's affordable copies of literary classics. But by 1910 there were many more rivals in the printing trade and business was declining badly for Milner & Sowerby. On 1st June 1910 the company went into liquidation. Of the two Sowerby brothers Francis lived latterly at Bowers Hall Barkisland dying in 1885; and John lived latterly at Green Hayes Savile Park Road now occupied by Lawrence Funeral Service dying in 1898. The firm was headed latterly by Major Reginald John Sowerby son of Francis who lived at Oak Mount Sutherland Road Lightcliffe. He died in 1923 after his company closed. The Raglan Street premises were taken over as an extra worsted factory by Standevens of Ladyship Mills. I am sure there are people around today who can remember them in business there and those firms which later occupied the same building. Solomon Henkel was the oldest son of Paul Henkel a prominent Lutheran Minister in New Market. He was a Doctor and cofounder of the Henkel Press. He was also a Post Master in New Market. The episodes are bound together by the presence of the hero and of the narrator who is also the author. Auch die Resultate der bisher operirten Fälle im Ganzen 8 sind nicht gut; 5 Mal trat der Tod in Folge der Operation ein nur in einem Fall Horsley ist bleibende noch nach 4 Monaten constatirte Heilung eingetreten. Bleibt uns der bestimmte Hinweis auf den Sitz der Geschwulst durch den Mangel directer Herdsymptome versagt so kann nicht einmal von einer explorativen Trepanation die Rede sein. Moos Salomon Moos 1831-1895 "besuchte das Lyceum in Karlsruhe und begann 1851 das Studium der Medizin in Heidelberg wo er nach Studienaufenthalten in Prag und Wien 1856 promoviert wurde. Seine Dissertation bildete die Antwort auf eine Preisaufgabe der Heidelberger Medizinischen Fakultät zum Thema "Über den Harnstoff- und Kochsalzgehalt des Urins in verschiedenen Krankheiten insbesondere im Typhus und im Intestinalcatarrh". Nach seiner Promotion ließ sich Moos als praktischer Arzt nieder übernahm jedoch bald darauf eine Assistentenstelle an der Heidelberger Medizinischen Klinik bei Karl Ewald Hasse. Mit einer Arbeit "Untersuchungen und Beobachtungen über den Einfluss der Pfortaderentzündung auf die Bildung der Galle und des Zuckers in der Leber" habilitierte sich Moos 1859 für Innere Medizin. Sein Interesse richtete sich immer stärker auf die damals als eigenständiges Fachgebiet der Medizin noch kaum hervorgetretene Ohrenheilkunde Otologie; 1862 begann er einschlägige Vorlesungen zu halten. Zunächst in seiner eigenen Wohnung später in einem kleinen Raum der Klinik richtete Moos ein Ambulatorium zur Behandlung von Ohrenleiden ein. 1866 erfolgte seine Ernennung zum ao. Professor die 1876 in eine Fachprofessur für Ohrenheilkunde umgewandelt wurde 1891 o. Honorarprof. 1870/71 fungierte Moos als Lazarettarzt. Von 1873 bis zu seinem Tod stand er als Leiter einer staatlichen Poliklinik in Heidelberg vor. Mit dem Extraordinariat für Ohrenheilkunde erhielt er 1876 auch die Mittel zur Errichtung eines kleinen Instituts für Otiatrie. Aufgrund seiner zahlreichen pathologischen pathologisch-anatomischen und auch histologischen Arbeiten gelang es Moos den Stellenwert der Ohrenheilkunde in der Medizin wesentlich zu steigern. The Maniac a Tale; or a View of Bethlem Hospital: and the Merits of Women a Poem from the French with Poetical Pieces on various Subjects original and translated.In 1824 she published The Faithful Servant or The History of Elizabeth Allen an Evangelical novel she published anonymously. At some point in her life she converted from Christianity to Judaism Blain157 and in 1828 she published Emma DeLissau: a narrative of striking vicissitudes and peculiar trials: with explanatory notes illustrative of the manners and customs of the Jews which proved to be quite popular and went through five editions by 1840 Jackson38. <br> In 1828 she also published Sophia DeLissau: or A portraiture of the Jews of the Nineteenth century: being an outline of their religious and domestic habits with explanatory notes. In 1830 she published The orphans of Lissau : and other interesting narratives immediately connected with Jewish customs domestic and religious with explanatory note a third volume in her Lissau series. <br> The Lissau series focuses on providing information about the aforementioned domestic and religious habits of Polish Jews in England with a particular focus on women in that group Blain157.<br> Her last book was Rosette and Miriam or The twin sisters: a Jewish narrative of the eighteenth century which she published in 1837 just two years before the death of her husband sometime around 1839.
