Hardcover. g to g. Folio 12 x 9". 79 1pp. Original silver-lettered burgundy cloth with round-shape photomontage pasted to front cover. Title page in red and black lettering. This scarce Soviet monograph is entirely dedicated to the art of John Heartfield 1891-1968 a German artist whose anti-Nazi and anti-Fascist photomontages made him a pioneer in the use of art as a political weapon. Heartfield also created book jackets for authors such as Upton Sinclair as well as stage sets for such noted playwrights as Bertolt Brecht and Erwin Piscator. Designed by Solomon Telingater 1903-1969 a Soviet graphic artist and a founding member of the October group a collective of Constructivist artists formed in 1928 the book is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous b/w duo-tone and color photographic reproductions dadaist works posters color reproductions of eight Upton Sinclair book jackets and other art. Of course his political photomontages for the weekly Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung AIZ are well represented along with art for a variety of publications among them a cover for the daily "Die Rote Fahne" an elaborate piece for Vereingung Internationaler Verlagsonstalten a German anti-war publication art for Der Cicerone a magazine for artists and art collectors and covers and interiors from Kurt Tucholsky's book "Deutschland Deutschland Ã¼ber alles." Includes a tipped in photographic portrait of Heartfield by Alexander Rodchenko and a tipped-in photomontage showing Lenin leading the way to new housing construction in Moscow. Scarce paper errata sheet tipped in at rear. Some soiling to front cover. Previous owner's inscription in German "In Erinnerung an den Ostfeldzug In Memory of the Eastern Campagne" dated 'Zhitomir Herbst 1941' on front free endpaper. "Feindspropaganda" enemy propaganda in red pencil reproduced on inside of each cover. Ex-library copy with Russian stamp at inner gutter of title page at bottom of page 21 and at bottom of last page not affecting lettering. Text in Russian. The book summarizes the works of Solomon Yudovin 1892-1954 Jewish Belorussian and Soviet artist the distinct representative of 'the Jewish renaissance'. Solomon Yudovin was no doubt one of the figures who helped to define and picture the face of Jewish art of the first quarter of the 20th century. As a young man he participated in the ethnographic expeditions organized by his uncle Semyon An-Skiy 1863-1920 and the Jewish Historical Ethnographical Society across the Pale of Settlement in Ukraine and Belarus. The goal of these expeditions held in 1912-1914 was to capture the everyday life and culture of the people across the Pale. Yudovin worked as a photographer artist and secretary and as a result had collected a lot of data on the Jewish household items ritual accessories gravestones matzevah synagogue paintings Jewish ornaments etc. These ornaments pictured by Yudovin have influenced all the artists who were working in traditional style at the time like Rybak and Lissitzky and became an important element of Jewish visual culture. He experimented with photos from the expeditions in the method of photo-impressionism but soon has found his main style in woodcuts and linotypes. Yudovin was active in Vitebsk in the first years after the revolution of 1917 where he collaborated with Marc Chagall. In 1918 he participated in the decoration of the city of Vitebsk for the parade of the first anniversary of October Revolution - the occasion for which Chagall famously did an open call to all the local artists in the newspaper 'Izvestiya Vitebskogo Gubernskogo Soveta' urging them to produce 'big and expressive' posters. Next year Chagall and Yudovin participated in the exhibition of Jewish artists in Vitebsk. In 1941-42 Yudovin created a series of woodcuts picturing Leningrad under siege and the series became one of his best-known works. This book consists of 49 woodcuts and also includes the list of all the woodcuts and linotypes produced by the artist to the day. printed by the author, typography of the Academy of Arts unknown

Schally "for their discoveries concerning the peptide hormone production of the brain" and the other half to Rosalyn Yalow "for the development of radioimmunoassays of peptide hormones.Rosalyn Yalow was a nuclear physicist. She developed radioimmunoassay RIA together with doctor Solomon Berson. RIA is used to measure small concentrations of substances in the body such as hormones in the blood. Yalow and Berson tracked insulin by injecting radioactive iodine into patients' blood. Because the method is so precise they were able to prove that type 2 diabetes is caused by the body's inefficient use of insulin. Previously it was thought that the disease was caused by a lack of insulin." Nobel Prize Org The most often referenced paper by Yalow and Berson is their 1960 paper see below published in JCI "where for the first time they described the pattern and quantity of insulin released in response to ingestion of sugar. The paper included data for normal subjects Type II diabetics and patients with a variety of other disorders.This long paper contains many important discoveries." Straus p 151 "It is not surprising that the 1960 article "Immunoassay of endogenous plasma insulin in man" by Yalow and Berson holds a record as one of the most cited articles ever published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.While a skeptic might note that most of the frequently cited articles in the literature are focused on methodology in this case while the paper superficially appears to be only a description of a method to assay insulin it actually marks a revolution in biology and medicine.Immunoassays provided a method by which minute quantities of virtually any biologically interesting moldecules present in blood or other fluids could be measure with sensitivity and specificity even in the presence of hundreds of thousands of other substances.they successfully applied the technique of immunoassay to the analysis of many other hormones and substances leading to breakthrough insights into multiple disease states." Kahn and Roth p 1051 We believe the present paper is a fundamental building block because it was a pre-cursor to the 1960 work showing for the first time that insulin could be measured in human rather than animal blood. "It took Yalow and Berson several years of work including detailed studies and mathematical models of the quantitative aspects of the reaction between insulin and antibody and evaluation of the species specificity of available antisera that they had raised in guinea pigs and rabbits before theoretical concepts of the RIA method could be translated into measurements of circulating insulin. They honed the technique with measurements of beef and other animal insulinis using antibody in the plasma of their human subjects. Finally in their 1959 paper that appeared in Nature as here they were measuring the insulin in human blood." Straus p151 It is interesting to note that the establishment found their work to be implausible: "Immunologists of the mid 1950s did not believe that insulin was immunogenic - hence the JCI rejection." of a 1955 a paper Yalow and Berson submitted to JCI that laid the groundwork for the insulin immunoassay was rejected for publication. "Yalow was the second woman after Gerty Cori and the first American-born woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
