With remarkable duo-tone lithograph wrappers depicting an image of an older man with a collared shirt and bald pate and bursting through the paper a young child. "At three years and at sixty" it says. "Compliments of your druggist. H.L. Pierce & Son Cavendish Vt." is printed not stamped on the rear wrapper panel. With the small ownership stamp "Chas. W. With an engraved title page with the logo of the University of Utrecht. One of the earliest volumes of the Utrecht students' almanac and the first to be edited by the students themselves. The almanac was published annually from 1823 until 1996. From 1882 onwards the almanac was a report of the activities of the Utrechtsch Studenten Corps Utrecht student society. In the early years however it was a typical almanac with the calendar opening and closing of the city gates times tables of ferries and coaches etc. but it also included extra information for students such as a short history of the university a list of the professors and board members a complete list of the 395 students with their addresses a Series Lectionem and short stories and poems.The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed and the joints are very slightly weakened. William Brown began printing this valuable compendium in 1780 and after his death in 1789 it was continued by the Neilson family until 1841. It did not appear however in 1781 1783 1790 1793 or 1795. The only collection known to contain all the volumes issued was burned in the Library of Parliament in Montreal April 25 1849. The publisher and composer of the work the Dutch-Jewish journalist and publisher Mozes Cohen Belinfante 1761-1827 published the almanac until his year of death. His younger brother Jacob Belinfante dates unknown continued the series under the title sGravenhaagsche Stadts-Almanak from 1830 until 1839.With a later ownership annotation on the verso of the front wrapper. The spine has been rubbed with loss of material the wrappers are somewhat browned with a water stain on the front. The leaves are somewhat browed and foxed. Otherwise in good condition.l Ned. All but one of the plates have their original tissue-guards. This little volume is remarkably clean & crisp with the folding plates and the hand-colored plates in fine condition. Backer and by De Weijer at Utrecht and 4 folding leaves with musical score. Second volume of a fine series of miniature almanacs beautifully illustrated. The work aims to present young literary talent to the public and contains songs and poems by both new and more established Dutch authors including J.J.L. ten Kate G. le Francq van Berkheij D.G. den Beer van Portugael and M.H. de Graaf. Special attention is asked for De dagen onzer Jeugd by J.E. Schut and for two pieces by T.H. Bussingh van der Koog a young deceased Leyden student. Also included are some poems in French by A. Clavareau and two pieces of music the first is a serenade with music by W. Broedelet and text by J.J.L. ten Kate and the second is titled In het Album van L.E. Bosch door D. Soeterik. The almanac was published for 15 consecutive years by various publishers.The spine is detached but still present and has been glued onto the first free flyleaf the boards are slightly damaged at the top edge. With a steel-engraved title a full page steel-engraved portrait of Jan ten Brink 6 full-page steel engraved plates protected by tissue paper guards and a folding leaf with musical annotation. Scarce edition of the Nederlandsche Muzen-almanak the most successful literary almanac published in the Netherlands in the 19th century. It was the first almanac in which the literary content played a predominant role although some characteristics of the traditional almanac remained such as the calendar. The almanac featured poetry and fictional stories which had not been published before and marked the debut of many 19th-century Dutch poets and writers. The present edition includes works by Bilderdijk Afscheid first edition J. and A.N. van Pellecom N. Beets J.G. de Hoop Scheffer J. J. L. Ten Kate and Petronella Moens. The almanac was published annually by artist author and publisher Johannes Immerzeel Jr. 1776-1841 from 1819 until 1840 who also contributed to the contents himself.The hinges are weakened but have been repaired with a strip of paper. Divided into two parts the first part contains the calendar genealogy of the Royal Houses of Europe and the second part has instructive and entertaining stories with the usual almanac information added at the end including a report of new inventions tables of weights and measures money rates statistics or the population of almost 350 cities. The almanac de Goettingue was one of the best illustrated almanacs of its time it was published in 37 volumes from 1776 until 1813 most of these volumes were printed in German and French editions. Gottingen is an old German city which has medieval roots dating from 1150 and 1200. The eighth year of this popular French almanac with calendar and ephemeris but unlike most American "culinary almanacs" the bulk of this work is indeed related to food with sections on various foodstuffs vegetables birds fish sauces etc. and many recipes. The attractive wrapper illustration by "F. Grenan" depicts two women working in the kitchen one cooking at the stove the other writing while handling some vegetables and birds. Is she recording a recipe or perhaps just back from market and keeping up accounts Like other copies of this almanac we've seen the illustration is hand-colored. Dog ears to some pages; otherwise internally sound and clean. Wrapper corners chipped and light soiling. Near very good in a handsome custom-made clamshell box. The series is one of the better Dutch literary periodicals a genre that was developed in the early 19th century from the traditional almanacs. The preliminaries contain the usual items for almanacs: religious feast days public holidays the calendar eclipses seasons travel and postal services etc. but the main part is reserved for literary miscellanea mainly poems. The contributions in this volume are unsigned a few giving the initials of their author as was common for literary periodicals of the early 19th century. The music however is signed by Wm. Sundorff.The spine ends are bumped the boards are slightly soiled. Internally mostly clean with slightly creased corners and a tear in the fore edge margin of page 63.
