An almanac advertising Burdock Blood Bitters with the standard calendars ephemeris testimonials and advertisements for other related products including "Dr. Fowler's Extract of Wild Strawberries". With remarkable duo-tone lithograph wrappers depicting an image of an older man with a collared shirt and bald pate and bursting through the paper a young child. "At three years and at sixty" it says. "Compliments of your druggist. H.L. Pierce & Son Cavendish Vt." is printed not stamped on the rear wrapper panel. With the small ownership stamp "Chas. W. They were published by Pierre-Étienne Janet in Paris as a series that ran from 1806 until 1866. The almanacs were intended for the upper ten at the Court in Paris as well in the military and the departments. They include a calendar and the names of the most important figures in the country at the time such as royals ambassadors clergymen the military lawyers national and regional magistrates physicians etc. divided per department. Each volume is illustrated with 4 full-page plates which in the earlier volumes are reproductions of famous paintings including Mary and John the Baptist praying for the sleeping Christ by Raphael The smoker by David Teniers and landscapes by Jan van Goyen and Jan Asselijn. The first two volumes include 12 blank leaves in the back for annotations. The 1815 edition the first to be published after the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte includes portraits of French kings.The boards are somewhat rubbed and discoloured volumes 1-4 are lacking the slipcase the boards of volume 4 are partly detached from the bookblock. With the engraved coat-of-arms of the First French Empire on the title page and numerous letterpress tables. 16 832 pp. Attractively bound copy of this interesting French almanac for the year 1804-1805 An XIII i.e. year 13 counted from 1792 the period running from 23 September 1804 to 22 September 1805 according to the French Republican calendar which was used from 1793 to 1805. It is the last almanac using the terminology of the French Revolution before Napoleon Bonaparte 1769-1821 was crowned Emperor of the French on 2 December 1804.This almanac contains a wealth of information concerning the organization of the administration of the French state in the first year of the First French Empire. It comprises the names of the main dignitaries in France and abroad mentioning i.a. Thomas Jefferson as President of the United States of America the public officials in Paris and in the provinces the magistracy the clergy the army officers etc. as well as the usual subjects present in most almanacs such as annual fairs stagecoaches and timetables. It is concluded with an extensive index pp. 817-824 and a supplement pp. 825-832 which is not always present in most copies we could trace.The French publisher Laurent Étienne Testu 1765-1839 worked from 1788 for the French printer François Jean Noël Debure 1743-1802 who was the son-in-law of the French printer Laurent Charles dHoury 1723-1786. The family of DHoury had started with the annual publication of the famous Almanach royal which appeared under this title from 1700 to 1792.In 1791 Testu took over Debures printing house and in 1792 the title of the almanac was turned into Almanach national de France due to the new political situation caused by the French Revolution. After Napoleons coronation to emperor in 1804 its title was subsequently changed into Almanach imperial. Testu was appointed imperial publisher to Napoleon until his abdication in 1814.With the 19th-century oval bookplate of the French military Albert Le Lorier "Sous-Intendant Militaire" mounted on the front pastedown. The head of spine is slightly chipped/damaged the corners of the boards are slightly worn. The title page is slightly stained in the outer blank margin two text leaves Oo2 and Zz5 are re-attached probably replaced and their outer blank margins are slightly shortened otherwise a beautiful binding in very good condition.l Grand-Carteret Les almanachs français no. 1433. hardcover

The eighth year of this popular French almanac with calendar and ephemeris but unlike most American "culinary almanacs" the bulk of this work is indeed related to food with sections on various foodstuffs vegetables birds fish sauces etc. and many recipes. The attractive wrapper illustration by "F. Grenan" depicts two women working in the kitchen one cooking at the stove the other writing while handling some vegetables and birds. Is she recording a recipe or perhaps just back from market and keeping up accounts Like other copies of this almanac we've seen the illustration is hand-colored. Dog ears to some pages; otherwise internally sound and clean. Wrapper corners chipped and light soiling. Near very good in a handsome custom-made clamshell box. Velyn. 28 15 1 99 1 blank pp. Illustrated separate volume in a series of almanacs published from 1818 till 1823 by the poet painter book seller and publisher Marten Westerman 1775-1852 who continued his successful series under the title Jaarboekje aan bevalligheid deugd en kunst gewijd from 1824 till 1828. The series is one of the better Dutch literary periodicals a genre that was developed in the early 19th century from the traditional almanacs. The preliminaries contain the usual items for almanacs: religious feast days public holidays the calendar eclipses seasons travel and postal services etc. but the main part is reserved for literary miscellanea mainly poems. The contributions in this volume are unsigned a few giving the initials of their author as was common for literary periodicals of the early 19th century. The music however is signed by Wm. Sundorff.The spine ends are bumped the boards are slightly soiled. Internally mostly clean with slightly creased corners and a tear in the fore edge margin of page 63. Apart from the calendars and related information they contain a continuing geographical and historical description of the main cities in these provinces and itinerary information for the routes between these cities with travel times and distances and time-tables for public transportation. They are illustrated with maps views and plans of the town and routes. The present copy also includes blank leaves for annotations.With the bookplate of W.Ch. Roelofsz mounted on the front pastedown and his signature and shelf mark label on the title page. The edges and corners of the boards as well as the spine ends are somewhat scuffed a few scratched on the back board lacking the pencil. Some of the tissue paper guards are slightly foxed. Complete set of the original series of this historical and literary almanac for Zeelandic Flanders mainly edited by Johan Hendrik van Dale 1828-1872 schoolmaster at Sluis whose name has become immortal as the composer of the first scholarly Dutch dictionary: De grote Van Dale. Apart from some traditional elements belonging to the almanac including a preface calendar feast days birthdays of the royal family eclipses tide-tables and market days the volumes contain historical accounts of important regional figures and events descriptions of local legends and short stories and poems from local authors. The first four volumes focus exclusively on Zeelandic Flanders and the final two on all of Zeeland. The plates include views of the tower and town hall at Sluis the Church of St. Bavo at Aardenburg Castle Windenburg in Dreischoor and a portrait of Colonel Joseph Ledel.The fourth volume is of particular interest because it includes the original invoice. The volume was bought from the well-known Amsterdam bookseller Frederik Muller on May 8 1857 by the Dutch Mennonite banker and art collector Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen 1816-1889 because he was particularly interested in the first article of the work on the Mennonite minister Ghysel Hebberecht 17th century.Volume 4 with the original invoice for this volume loosely inserted and the initials of Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen in pencil on the title page a contemporary ownership annotation below the opening plate in volume 5. Some of the boards are slightly browned and stained. The leaves are somewhat browned and occasionally slightly foxed the full-page plate in volume 5 has been mounted onto the leaf. The work is housed in a brown decorative paper slipcase. 32mo. With an engraved frontispiece an engraved title with a vignette and 8 full-page numbered engraved plates by Neubauer. Fine illustrated German almanac with a calendar and literary contributions including poetry a story in prose and several aphorisms. Most are signed only with initials but two have been signed by Von Münchausen. Each month in the calendar is accompanied by a poem. Several of these are listed at the beginning which means they were considered suitable to use in an Album Amicorum. The plates not accompanied by explanatory texts illustrate scenes from a theatre play and show Romantic scenes after paintings by Buchhöltz.The boards are slightly rubbed some discolouration at the top where the boards are not covered by the slipcase. The frontispiece and title page are detached but still present the page edges of the second half of the work are darker than those of the first half but the two halves likely belong together pencil markings on the verso of one of the plates and the last free flyleaf. Calendar: 6 leaves; notebook: 4 leaves. <br/> Red straight-grain morocco lined with green satin containing a calendar in paper wrappers and notebook bound in matching pale green satin. Exterior decorative panel with central painted porcelain scene surrounded by wire filigree and pearls under a glass window. In a later red morocco case by Riviere & Son stamp-signed double ruled in gilt raised bands gilt-ruled compartments. Each calendar page with an engraved vignette. The necessaire additionally containing a pair of scissors with a delicately carved mother-of-pearl handle a silver mechanical pencil a small wooden pencil and an awl a tipped-in early 20th century auction listing not mentioning the latter two suggesting they are possible later additions. The notebook with the engraved bookplate of Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons dated 1908 to the front pastedown. Calendar leaves loose with fore-edges slightly creased other trivial defects but the leaves and binding fresh and quite clean. Nécessaire lightly worn from use with very short split to one tab closure; decorative panel with faint horizontal hairline crack visible only under magnification scattered losses to the paint on the porcelain panel but the fragile object surprisingly well preserved with all its components present.<br/> <br/> This charming calendar in a period nécessaire a small case for toiletries or as here personal implements provides a window into the life of a young woman during France’s Bourbon Restoration; wonderfully preserved in a custom Riviere box it was later in an important British collection. Small calendars and almanacs were popular New Years gifts for young French women starting in the late 18th century and by the second decade of the 19th century--when this calendar was likely produced--a thriving industry had grown up around their production. Louis Janet 1788-1840 who was in business as a bookseller and binder from 1810 through 1838 made much of his business in these small almanacs and keepsake books. In our charming almanac each month has an attractive engraving of a Neoclassical scene with graceful women in flowing drapery often accompanied by flitting putti. The nécessaire is similarly decorated: the central panel depicts a young female in a flowing gown leaning over a plinth inscribed with the text: "l’amilie me suffit" "friendship is enough for me". These attractive illustrations together with the contents of the nécessaire suggest its owner was a fashionable young woman. This delightful object is from the collection of David Lionel Salomons 1851-1925 whose books were chosen with notable discrimination the goal always being to obtain copies in very fine condition. The collection was particularly strong in 18th and 19th century illustrated books and attractive bindings. It is very likely given the dates of his collection that he was the owner who commissioned the pleasing Riviere & Son box in which the nécessaire currently resides. Louis Janet unknown

With an engraved title page and 6 full-page engraved plates. 2 works in 1 volume. 2 24 2; 24 pp. Very beautifully produced and illustrated miniature almanac containing a calendar for 1826 and 12 short rhyming songs for children. They are set to the melodies of popular songs of the time which are mentioned at the start. The section with songs the Morale du cur was likely printed separately and could be added to a Calendrier of choice as both parts have their own title page. We have been able to trace two copies of the Morale with a Calendrier for a different year. The 1826 calendar however appears to be very rare as we have not been able to trace any other copies of it in institutions or sales records nor found any mention of it in reference works.The leaves are somewhat browned and foxed. The slipcase is slightly bumped at the bottom. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. With the coat of arms of the Dutch Kingdom on the title page and a folding engraved hand-coloured map of the Dutch Kingdom in a roundel by Basnel & son with a list of all the provinces of the Kingdom with the numbers of their populations and distances from Amsterdam The Hague and Brussels. 84 192 55 1 pp. Rare official almanac of the Kingdom of the Netherlands printed by the "imprimeur et libraire de Sa Majesté" for the year 1819 in French one of the two official languages of the country at the time. Apart from the parts usually present in almanacs calendar eclipses postal rates coins etc. the Calendrier Royal contains a complete overview of the members of the royal family the official functions of the court and the civil service of the Dutch Kingdom the government and the Dutch ambasasdors in other countries with the names of all the officials and office holders. We have not been able to find the present edition anywhere else.With contemporary annotations in the back mostly a list of names and an annotation on the first free flyleaf suggesting that the present copy was owned by Baron Constant Rebecque paymaster whose name has been marked on p. 148. The spine is gone and has been repaired with a strip of red paper which is partially detached the edges and corners of the boards of both the book and slipcase are scuffed. Eagelmann". FIRST EDITION of this early American culinary almanac just the second listed in David O'Neal's catalogue of the Phelps collection. With eighty-one culinary household and medicinal recipes. Included are remarks on poultry raising the common duck the "betting dandy" dairy management fast driving of horses capture of a robber a duel between two African-Americans another duel between two Native Americans and the mode of burying lawyers in olden times. A few pages dog eared; some light soiling and fly specking to printed wrappers backed in green paper. With the blind stamp of the Western Reserve Historical Society to the front panel of wrapper.
