An association copy of this 1848 directory of French Navy personnel owned by the contemporaneous Senior Commander of the British Navy Augustus Phillimore. In French. A complete directory of all the personnel of the French Navy in 1848 with a supplement from 1849 to the rear. This is an association copy previously belonging to Admiral Sir Augustus Phillimore a Royal Navy officer who became Commander-in-Chief Plymouth in 1884. Printed in French. Alongside tide tables calendars and a record of eclipses general inspections abbreviations and other useful material the book contains a general list of naval officers flag guard staff line crews royal naval artillery corps engineering officers health service maritime courts and all the other positions active in the French colonies. With prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown. The book was previously owned by Admiral Sir Augustus Phillimore a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Senior Commander of the Royal Navy Commander-in-Chief Plymouth in 1884. From the ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper it appears that the book was a gift from Eugene Maissin who was a French naval officer and colonial administrator who worked as an aide-de-camp to Admiral Charles Baudin. Maissin writes 'Augustus Philllimore 1848 from E. Maissin Chef d'Etat Majeur & the French fleet under Admiral Baudin'. Binder's sticker to front pastedown. Bound By 'H. & A. Bult 25 New Quebec Street St Portman Square'. Rebound in quarter calf binding over blue cloth boards. Rubbed to the joints with some light rubbing to the extremities. Missing both spine labels. Internally firmly bound. There is some marginalia in ink to the first fifty pages or so. Foxing is worse to the front and rear of the book but at the centre pages are lightly age-toned but clean.
