First Edition of the first ordinances of Lorraine as part of France. Although the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar had been ceded to France by the Treaty of Vienna in 1738 for political reasons Louis XV postponed annexation and named his father-in-law Stanislas Leszczy ski deposed King of Poland as the last titular sovereign Duke of Lorraine and Bar. The two duchies were not officially annexed to France until the latter's death in 1766. This comprehensive set of revised laws governing the newly French capital city of the province of Lorraine was promulgated three years later on 4 January 1769. The highly detailed regulations cover matters of municipal safety and hygiene commerce and trade and interpersonal relations providing a vivid and sometimes surprising view of daily life. The 18 chapters are devoted to: protection of Sundays and holidays on which only fruit and vegetable sellers are allowed to work before 9 am; regulation of foreigners and their conditions of residence and admission to the status of bourgeois; relations between servants and their masters; regulation of the grain market delivery of grains etc.; rules for bakers butchers sausage-makers fishmongers open-air-markets taverners restaurateurs and billiard-hall owners; general commerce delivery of wood drivers and delivery-boys private porters of chairs public carriages street hygiene and safety fires and échenillage the obligatory extermination of caterpillars and other arboreal pests. A scarce early map of the Mississippi River Valley depicting the American region between the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes taken from HET GROOT TAFEREEL DER DWAASHEID. THE GREAT MIRROR OF FOLLY a scathing account of the speculative crashes that led to European financial disaster in 1720. The work was a chronicle of the failed attempts by John Law Controller General of Finances for the French government to open Louisiana to trade in order to help alleviate France's financial problems. This led to the creation of the Mississippi Company which created the "Mississippi Bubble" incident that destroyed the Banque Générale Privée the General Private Bank which Law founded. The map depicts the Mississippi River parts of Louisiana and Florida Lake Michigan referred to here as "Lac de Illionis" and Lake Superior the extent of French colonial explorations in the region and names of Indian tribes. It is decorated with a title cartouche incorporating the arms of John Law and depicting two Native Americans holding a cornucopia through which flows the mighty Mississippi River. unknown books

A brief compendium of spiritual and anti- slavery writings by British religious writer and mystic William Law influential Quaker abolitionist Anthony Benezet and other unidentified authors. The "Extract" is attributed to William Law the "Remarks on the nature and bad effects of spirituous liquors" to Benezet and the "Thoughts on Slavery" to various writers. "Considerations on war" which immediately follows the extract of Law's SPIRIT OF PRAYER is unattributed. The brief remarks on slavery are consistently against the institution. A typical passage begins: "The Bondage we have imposed on the Africans is absolutely repugnant to justice." Lady Elizabeth Hastings was the original for Aspasia in Steele's "Tatler" and a major donor to Oxford University Queen's College. There are three revisions in the text in an early hand a very good copy. First edition of one of the earliest if not the earliest of Law's publications. He is identified on the title as Fellow of Emmanuel College and had been licensed as curate at Haslingfield in July of 1711. DNB notes two of his sermons from this period one in manuscript and one published at a somewhat later date. His entry into the pamphlet exchange surrounding the Bangorian controversy in 1717 led to his increased public visibility as did his spirited critique of Mandeville. With the publication of A PRACTICAL TREATISE UPON CHRISTIAN PERFECTION 1726 and A SERIOUS CALL TO A DEVOUT AND HOLY LIFE 1729 he evolved as one of the primary influences on the English Evangelical revival and made a lasting impression on individuals as diverse as Gibbon Samuel Johnson and John Wesley. Contemporary Dutch speckled calf spine in eight compartments with raised bands red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment repeat decoration in gilt in the others joints slightly split extremities scuffed<br/> <br/>A very rare collection of contemporary satirical prints relating to the financial exploits of John Law and his infamous Mississippi Bubble.<br/> <br/>John Law bap. 21 April 1671 - 21 March 1729 was a Scottish economist who believed that money was only a means of exchange that did not constitute wealth in itself and that national wealth depended on trade. He is said to be the father of finance responsible for the adoption or use of paper money or bills in the world today. Law was a gambler and a brilliant mental calculator and was known to win card games by mentally calculating the odds. An expert in statistics he was the originator of economic theories including two major ideas: The Scarcity Theory of Value and the Real bills doctrine. The present work records the economic crisis precipitated by Law. The crisis had its origins in the decision of the French regent Philippe d'Orléans to appoint John Law the Controller General of Finances for France. In May 1716 the Banque Générale Privée which developed the use of paper money was set up by Law. It was a private bank but three quarters of the capital consisted of government bills and government accepted notes. In August 1717 he bought the Mississippi Company to help the French colony in Louisiana. In 1717 he also brokered the sale of Thomas Pitt's diamond to the regent Philippe d'Orléans. In the same year Law floated the Mississippi Company as a joint stock trading company called the Compagnie d'Occident which was granted a trade monopoly of the West Indies and North America. The bank became the Banque Royale in 1718 meaning the notes were guaranteed by the king. The Company absorbed the Compagnie des Indes Orientales Compagnie de Chine and other rival trading companies and became the Compagnie Perpetuelle des Indes on 23 May 1719 with a monopoly of commerce on all the seas. The system however encouraged speculation in shares in The Company of the Indies the shares becoming a sort of paper currency. In 1720 the bank and company were united and Law was appointed Controller General of Finances to attract capital. Law's pioneering note-issuing bank was extremely successful until it collapsed and caused an economic crisis in France and across Europe. Law exaggerated the wealth of Louisiana with an effective marketing scheme which led to wild speculation on the shares of the company in 1719. In February 1720 it was valued for a very high future cash flow at 10000 livres.
