Alexander Dunbar of Machrimore refused to pay the bill and here seeks confirmation that it was the other party who breached the agreement first. John Lawson was one of a number of supposedly fictitious voters in Elgin and Forres during the election of 1784 in which Alexander Penrose-Cumming was defeated by James Duff Earl of Fife. On 21 June 1791 Francis Sanders of Kidlington Oxford County yeoman and John Sanders of Yarnton Oxford County yeoman gave a bond of 20 pounds each for Francis Sanders' appearance at the next general quarter sessions of the peace at Tewkesbury Glocester Co. to answer the complaint of Elizabeth Henderson single woman and the overseers of the poor of Tewkesbury for "unlawfully begetting the said Elizabeth Henderson with child" which is likely to become chargeable to Tewkesbury. One of three pamphlets William Law 1686-1761 contributed to the "Bangorian controversy" which erupted in 1717 when the bishop of Bangor Benjamin Hoadly delivered a sermon before the king in which he denied that the church had any doctrinal or disciplinary authority. In the war of words that ensued some 50 writers issued over 200 pamphlets. Law contributions in defense of church authority did much to bring him to public notice for the first time. A Practical Treatise upon Christian Perfection 1726 and A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life 1729 stern manuals for self-regulation and Christian conduct brought him some fame and the admiration of John Wesley among others though the two later quarreled. His later life and writings were strongly influenced by the German protestant mystic Jacob Boehme who was also an influence on William Blake. ESTC T172224. unknown

An indictment against James Fyfe on behalf of Patrick Duff alleging perjury in his oath before voting in the contested Banffshire by-election of 1795. Duff was opposed to the Earl of Fife’s control of the electoral roll and stood against the Earl’s candidate in the by-election but lost. The dissolution of Parliament for a general election looming instead of submitting a petition to Parliament challenging the result Duff instead brought this private prosecution against Lieutenant James Fyfe of Edinglassie one of the electors. The by-election is the subject of an article by Alistair Mutch ‘A Contested Eighteenth-Century Election’ Northern Scotland vol. 2 pp. 22-35 based on the records of it in the National Archives though no copy of this printing has been traced elsewhere. Presentation inscription to half-title: ‘Sir William Forbes with Mr Robinson’s Com’. The substantial response on behalf of John Lawson to the charge of perjury brought by Alexander Penrose-Cumming following Lawson’s oath and vote in the general election of 1784. Lawson’s response gives a thorough examination of the history of electoral registration and the process of creating electors by distribution of land ownership. Kansas only in ESTC. ESTC N16733. 17857103s.l.: s.n. 1785. 4to pp. ii 49 1. Extracted from a volume retaining fragments of original spine. Lightly soiled two small paper flaws to final leaf. The opening salvo in a substantial case of electoral fraud and misrepresentation in the county of Moray between two groups represented by Sir Alexander Penrose Cumming later Cumming-Gordon 1st Baronet 1749-1806 on one side and here on the other William Leslie Minister of the Parish of St Andrews and Longbride sparked by the election of spring 1784. A group of freeholders in Elgin and Forres argue that the electoral roll has been fraudulently increased from 22 ‘real freeholders’ to 65 and therefore for several elections past the wrong candidate has been elected. In the 1784 election Penrose-Cumming lost to James Duff Earl of Fife who it is claimed formed ‘a troop of fictitious voters’ by giving; this case targets William Leslie who swore under oath that he owned parts of Kinnedar but did so under arrangement with Duff. Other ‘fictitious voters’ had withdrawn under pressure but Leslie fought the case arguing against Penrose-Cumming’s standing to bring the case and the claim against his freeholding. BL only in ESTC. The merchant John Wilson seeks exoneration in a dispute with Messrs Fairholm and Arbuthnot Edinburgh merchants and Thomas Crauford late factor of the Duke of Hamilton’s salt works at Bo’ness over the non-delivery of nearly 2000 bushels of salt. Wilson received 1020 bushels of a consignment of 3000 agreed with Fairholm and Arbuthnot but needed time to collect the remainder until he secured a ship for transport. After asking for the remainder of his purchased salt Crauford claimed to not have it and to have never had a contract with Wilson. Not in ESTC. [s.n.] unknown

The petition of Alexander Denham leaseholder against Archibald Stewart advocate. Stewart had terminated Denham’s lease on grounds of misconduct by Denham’s father Sir Robert but after various claims and appeals it was found that Robert Denham had not in fact violated the lease and the terms under which it was ended were not in fact in the agreement in the first place. Denham seeks sequestration of the relevant estate so that his income can be restored. This copy bears an annotation by Alexander Carmichael WS addressed to Stewart’s advocate detailing when the petition will be submitted to the Lords. Not in ESTC. [s.n.] unknown

A printed indictment against Andrew Macghie of Edinburgh for armed robbery. Macghie is charged with purchasing a pistol under guise of intending to travel to Glasgow but instead using it to assault and rob James Ferrier Writer and Patrick Graeme Advocate in separate instances near the Canongate in December of 1769. It concludes: ‘All which. being found proven by the verdict of an assize. you ought to be punished with the pains of law to the terror of others to commit the like crimes in all time coming’. There is then appended a list of witnesses beginning with the victims but stretching to over two dozen further names and a list of the members of the assize i.e. jury in Scots law among which are a number of booksellers and bankers including Sir William Forbes from whose collection this copy originates. On Jan. 30 1735 Edmund Deane of Greenwich Kent Co. carpenter transfers to William Deane of Deptford Kent Co. distiller one third of a property called Hockenden in the parish of St. Mary Cray Kent Co. late occupied by William Hawes deceased and now occupied by his widow. It contains a house barn stable carthouse yard garden 3 orchards and 4 parcels of arable land of about 8 acres. Signed by Edmund Deane with his seal. Blue 6 penny stamp in margin. One engraved revenue stamp on exterior with "23" in the upper right-hand corner.
