17957108s.l.: s.n. 1795. 4to pp. ii 95 1 folding genealogical chart. Extracted from a volume retaining portions of leather spine. Light soiling to front and rear. A scarce argument for the inheritance of John Stewart 7th Earl of Galloway 1736-1806 to give him a claim to the English peerage. Lord Galloway had already sat in the House of Lords as a Scottish representative peer and had done so since 1774 but faced re-election each parliament and lost his seat in the 1790 election. Whether on the strength of this argument or his service as a Lord of the Bedchamber Lord Galloway achieved his aim being created Baron Stewart of Garlies in the peerage of Great Britain in 1796 and thereby rejoining the Lords as a permanent member. Though anonymous this pamphlet was written by Eliezer Williams 1754-1820 chaplain and tutor to the Galloway family who had been enlisted to help investigate the pedigree. The table at the end mentions the death of Vice-Admiral Keith Stewart in March 1795 giving a terminus post quem for the publication. NLS and Hornel Gallery only in ESTC. ESTC T193376. 17317139s.l.: s.n. 1731. 4to pp. 32. Extracted from a volume. First and last leaves soiled gatherings largely detached inner blank corner torn from final leaf. A petition on behalf of the the trustees for the creditors of John Lowis of Merchistoun 1681-c.1754 who had wasted a substantial inheritance and fallen into bankruptcy against the notorious rake rapist and gambler Colonel Francis Charteris 1675-1732 who claimed preference in settlement for his debts. The trustees allege that Charteris who had amassed a considerable fortune through gambling and the South Sea Bubble and had recently been pardoned possibly through bribery following a sensational trial and conviction for rape had won a small bill from Lowis in gaming and then through usury extortion and blackmail raised the sum to nearly £6000 over a million pounds in modern money but never claimed any payment until the bankruptcy was declared rendering the debt null under the Bankruptcy Act of 1696. The Colonel died during the case and it proceeded against his heirs being appealed back and forth up to the Lords who eventually decided in favour of the trustees. ESTC records a petition against Lowis during his bankruptcy in 1729 and several documents of the case against Charteris being appealed but has no record of this initiating action. Not in ESTC. A petition for William Abbot a brewer of Dundee who was falsely accused of robbing the widow of Thomas Bower former Provost of the city. Janet Alison had claimed ‘a Person with a Paper on his Face’ had ‘tied her Hand and Foot and took some Money out of her Repositories while she was in that Condition’ and some months later had spotted William Abbot out of a window and called him ‘the Lown Villain and Thief’. Abbot was found innocent and Alison fined but she did not pay and died shortly afterward. Abbot transferred the charge to her nephew who claimed his aunt was delirious and not responsible for her actions; Abbot here seeks dismissal of that defence and enforcement of the earlier judgement. Published anonymously by Quaker Joseph Besse who produced a number of important volumes recording the legal woes of early English and Welsh Quakers. This volume describes the prosecutions of Quakers from 1696 to 1736 in England and Wales arranged alphabetically by county. Quakers were prosecuted for refusing to pay the annual tithe one tenth of their income and other support for the Church of England. In Very Good- Condition: cover is rubbed; spine is sunned; leather is starting to separated at the head of the spine and lacking small section of leather at head of spine; first and last leaves have soiling of corners and light foxing; pages are otherwise clean and tight. Written in pencil on front free endpaper: "Joshua Brinkle." Oval stamp of Dickinson College Library on both front endpapers. On the title page "J. P. Brinckle" is crossed out and "Kemp Roberts" written below. Francis Hopkinson 1737-1791 a Signer of the Declaration of Independence and composer was tried in 1780 on charges of accepting bribes; he was acquitted. John Nicholson d. 1800 financier Comptroller General of Pennsylvania and land speculator was charged with financial irregularities in 1793; he was acquitted. Pp. 17-32 and 3 folded engraved plates. <br/><br/><em>First printing of this controverial paper. "In 1743 Clairaut read before the Academy a Paper entitled "L’orbite de la lune dans le systeme de M. Newton" Newton was not fully aware of the movement of the moon’s apogee and therefore the problem had to be reexamined in greater detail. However Clairaut - and d’Alembert and Euler who were also working on this question - found only half of the observed movement in their calculations. It was then that Clairaut suggested completing Newton’s law of attraction by adding a term inversely proportional to the fourth power of the distance. This correction of the law elicited a spirited reaction from Buffon who opposed this modification with metaphysical considerations on the simplicity of the laws of nature. Clairaut more positive and more a pure mathematician wanted to stick to calculations and observations. The controversy that arose between these two academicians appears in the Mémoires of the Academy for 1745 published long afterward." DSB. </em> unknown

An appeal for damages against the representatives of Archibald Douglas Duke of Douglas on behalf of the late Walter Colvill a baker and macer of the Court of Session and his widow and eldest son following the conclusion of the Douglas Cause. Walter and his family had been ‘attached’ to Lady Jane Douglas providing assistance of various kinds while the controversy over the inheritance of the Douglas line had raged and their case argues that representatives of Archibald Douglas had taken advantage of them and embezzled their livings ruining them financially. Bound in full period sheep with gilt spine; rubbing and wear to extremities; head cap and front hinge are neatly restored. Several worn spots on the spine are touched up and a few gilt lines are repaired. Interior contains light age-toning and some spots of foxing. Name plate present on inside front cover with name rubbed off. This book was first published in 1708. According to Upcott the author was a physician named Dr. Samuel Midgley "who wrote it while in Halifax jail for debt where he died in 1695. His poverty prevented his printing it; and John Bentley under whose name the volume is generally known who was Clerk of Halifax Church claimed the hounor of it after his death." Chapter I contains a description of town customs and traditions; chapter II discusses the laws of Halifax and defends the Gibbet Law which states that any felon caught with stolen commodities valued at thirteen pence half-penny shall following his condemnation be led to the town gibbet and have his head cut off; chapter III offers a narrative of trying felons in Halifax. The second part of the book contains a separate title page "Revenge upon revenge: or an historical narrative of the tragical practices of Sir John Eland of Eland High Sheriff of the County of York " Halifax 1761 which recounts some of the misdeeds surrounding the "Elland Feud" particularly the murder of Sir Robert Beaumont by Sir John Eland and the subsequent killing of Eland by Beaumonts son.ESTC T33073; Upcott p.1392; Halkett & Laing III p.2. <br/> <br/> P.
